A big reason for Tesla depreciation, is continuous reduction in new vehicle pricing. Nobody but Tesla lowers prices. So, thinking this way ...their brand new cars are "depreciating". And will continue as efficiencies of scale and engineering grow.
I think it's still more about American consumer reticence to adopt an EV over ICE and that is depressing used EV prices all around. I picked up a near pristine 2022 Tesla Model 3 Long Range this year (2024) for only $20k (the car was over $62k brand new just two years prior). It seems that ALL used EVs are a LOT less expensive than any similar ICE counterpart.
Most people buying a 911 will NOT consider a Tesla model 3. They are 2 different cars for different reasons. Plus just because you have the $ for a 911 does NOT mean the dealer will allocate you one.
The redesigned 3 is LEAGUES above the previous 3/Y in terms of build quality, interior quality, chassis dynamics, etc. 911 is still more "luxurious", but the new 3 forces the driver to reconsider and the gap shrinks.

Depends, the big channels also cant criticize Teslas, since Tesla then doesnt give them presscars, which means less views. So basically, you have to take everything with a grain of salt nowadays. Obviously this video was a pure Teslacommercial.
The 911's frunk is its only cargo storage area whereas with the 3, there's the trunk in addition to the frunk. As for depreciation, I suspect the Performance variance from 2025 on won't depreciate as bad. To be fair, all EVs in recent years suffer large depreciation: all Tacans, all Lucids, Audi's and the likes see huge loss in values.
The 992.2 base has the GTS turbos from the 992.1, and intercooler from the 992.1 Turbo. It’s a tune away from making 500 to 600hp very cheaply which is what most base owners will do anyways.

Or, you buy the Tesla like I did and have enough left to also have a Superduke. The Porsche is fun, but it does however not do third gear Power wheelies😁 for me its the best of both worlds. 140000km in the 3 so far, and I still love it.
Elephants in the room missed as usual…the unpretentious M3 ain’t cooking future generations alive, drivetrain has only 2 moving parts so no ridiculous ICE maintenance issues, and all the weight is in the floor so they handle good. Why the hell would you buy an ICE? If it has an exhaust it’s a slug

I just clicked this video to tell you guys that no matter the outcome, a Porsche 911 can't be compared with any other car. The design and the feeling of driving are in a league of their own.
The 911 outperforms the Tesla by miles in the depriciation category, in 2 years the M3 will be worth 50% and the 911 will be 90-95% adjusted for inflation
Yeah. But the right comparison there is the Tesla roadster v a 911. All of the Porsche "mass" market cars - Booster, Cayenne, Panamera, Macan - depreciate incredibly fast.
One you’ll see at cars and coffee and car shows, and will have any car guy breaking his neck to turn and see on the road. The other is for the commuter going to work.
I would rather have both. Nobody said you had to choose one over the other. This seems to be a prevailing opinion that one must pick either ICE or EV. I happen to like both for different reasons. Even my dad has a 1969 Camaro SS and daily drives an EV.
I have a 2022 Model Y Performance and a 2017 991.2 C2s with all the handling goodies. Around town the Model Y is just perfect. Out on mountain roads the 911 is amazing and very very fast. The Model 3 Performance you tested probably handles way better than my Y. My Y has a low center of gravity but the suspension gets overwhelmed by the car's weight when pushing around bumpy corners. Not a good feeling. In contrast the 911 feels nimble and precise and very very stable and confidence inspiring. The Y is so fun off the line with electric instant torque. You have to work more with the 911 off the line and frankly the 911 is more about the handling for me. Perhaps you noticed heavier steering with the 911 due to the wider tires? Anyway, both are great vehicles-glad I have both. We drive the Model Y 99% of the time and save the 911 for those fun backroad drives with Waze running and a radar detector on:) Also the 911 is great for two person road trips as gas powered cars are still more convenient. When and if the new Tesla Roadster comes out that might be a 911 killer, but I plan to keep my 911 for a long long time. So fun. I will happily part with my Y for something electric and improved. The 911 is timeless. The Y is not. I will add that I come from a Sport Bike background and did a lot of track days, so the 911 is a substitute now that I am a senior citizen. Better to have 4 wheels on the ground and more safety!
It's like comparing rolex to an apple watch. There are 200k + luxury cars that are slower than golf R, but does that make golf R a better car? Maybe it's better for throwing it down on a B road but thats about it. It's not all about straight line 0-100 km/h acceleration. If I wanted a 911 I'd buy it and I understand people why they do.
The new model 3 performance is so good. The fit and finish have been greatly improved over the first gen. I have the first gen and want one of these. Definitely the best daily driver available.
Owning a Porsche is a dream or a feeling of achievement come true. You have arrived in a Porsche. You don't dream about owning a tesla, Tesla is just a car you lease to commute to work.
Once people get over the fact that an electric sports car does not have engine and exhaust sound, they really have to admit that the electric vehicle is simply the better car, there's no way around it.
Comparing a Porsche to a Tesla is probably a bit strange. Porsche is significantly better than Tesla. Would have chosen any Porsche over Tesla. But fun to watch
Tesla's decpreciate more but once you also take in account the maintenance it is a lot cheaper. I had several Tesla's and the last 2019 M3P depreciated from 70k to 25k in 5 years (Euro's), but saved me 25K in cost compared to a Lexus I used to own a while back (Porsche maintenance will be higher, I owned a few as well). The only maintenance I had on the M3P was 6 tires. Now I have the 2024 M3P and indeed a brilliant car.
Great video! Emphasis on the crucials and do not spend minutes on mindless intros. Love your way of presenting. I considered the M3 performance in August, but with the speed tickets I received with my previous M3 LR (in Norway radar detectors are disallowed), I know the temptations of the Performance would lead me to destitute.
Nice video as usual. I had an 02 911 C4 and the Model 3 out performs it quite easily in a straight line. In the turns I'm not convinced yet. When I owned the 911 I could not wait to take it on evening drives up Mount Lemmon to just enjoy it, the sounds, the connection to the car etc. I don't find myself doing that in my Model 3 performance. As an overall car the Model 3 is the winner, but I will never have the desire to drive it like I did the 911.
I read that a lot, while in France, Model 3s are some of the slowest depreciating cars on the first 3 years. A Performance loses a bit less than 32% of catalog price in 3 years while most cars have lost more than 40%. Why such an extreme difference with the US market?
Depends on what you want out of a car. If you want a very fast, reasonably practical, and sporty-feeling street car the Model 3 is great. But cars like the 911 are engineered for all around performance and driving feel. The tires, suspension, brakes, transmission, engine, and cooling systems are designed to work in harmony to fit a certain performance envelope and be able to maintain it over a longer drive. Do a couple of laps in a Model 3 Performance and the brakes are likely to catch fire.
The Taycan already blew the Tesla out of the water. Thankfully the EVs aren't doing well with Porsche and we can get back to business and hopefully enter F1
@@982SharkBlue Huh? In order to match the model 3 performance you've got to get the GTS which starts at $147k and go from there. The biggest problem with the Germans is the amount you need to pay - every feature is paid option - just to be competitive with the model 3 performance which is essentially a supped up family car.
I have a base 992.2 for 6 weeks and it’s a precision instrument. You hear the engine , you feel the engine, the steering and brakes are telepathic. It’s refined. I have 19/20” wheels. My wife has the 2024 model 3 performance and it is shockingly good. A better daily, and incredible sound system. Steering is surprisingly good for a Tesla. It’s too fast (makes you dizzy) almost wish we got the long range but it didn’t come with the cool seats. Tesla model 3 is the best daily driver ever. I might replace stock 20” wheels for 18” for better ride and range. My wife doesn’t push the car enough for the sticky tires. Just took it to work in the rain and awd traction is impressive. Drove from SF to Tahoe and handling is 85% of the Porsche but the passing is like your in a blue angels fa/18. Insurance and registration is a nightmare here in California for these two cars.
Appreciate the perspective from someone that drives both (versus pundits who have driven only one or neither). For the Tesla get the Tesla Insurance. It's usually way cheaper.
We recently bought a dual motor model 3 for my wife, I have to say it’s really very good and makes my 997C2S feel so much less special which surprises me. On a winding country A road here in the UK, the Tesla is huge fun… again surprising
When the Model 3 was first released, even my aging eyes could spot the paint defects and naff panel gaps. The gap at the front edge of the hood always stuck out like a sore thumb! The passage of time has made this a thing of the past... combine the better finish with the subtle design changes, and the reasons for shopping elsewhere are reducing all the time.
I want one. Why does Tesla's website trip/charging planner place more charging stops on a Model S long range than a Model 3 Long Range? (The "S" has more range right?)
Owning both is the answer - except my 911 is a Cabriolet. Drive the golf cart to the grocery store & office, drive the 911 when you want to actually enjoy driving.
I would argue anyone spending $120k on a base Porche doesnt know anything about cars either. Do you know how many badass hot rod/track toys you could get under $120k?!
I have M3P, 718 CS mapped to 450hp, 987 3.4BS. My favourite to drive most of the time is M3P, the way it delivers power is quite brutal and i feel more confident to drive fast in this car on our wet UK road than my Porsche which don't give me the confidence with RWD and engine behind the seats.
It's like comparing a hand winding watch with Swiss mechanism to a digital watch...doesn't make too much sense. The Porsche has a value that is not only linked to its performance. It's a kind of soul that you have or not have.
I love my M3P 2024-it’s a perfect blend of tech and performance. But my next car? A Porsche 911. I’m hoping to have both eventually because the Tesla is cutting-edge, but the swagger of a Porsche is something else entirely. It’s interesting-at 26, I see a lot of guys my age with Teslas, but you rarely see someone my age behind the wheel of a Porsche. It’s a different game. A Tesla turns heads; a Porsche turns the conversation.
I replaced my performance car and daily driver with a Tesla M3P. I'll never go back to an ICE. The Tesla is a daily driver, performance car, economy car, and (for me) a luxury car. No more gas station visits, oil changes, brake replacements, etc. etc. It may not be for everyone, but for me it's the best. And, I don't miss the shifting with the instant torque. The handling is on par with other performance cars. The weight is only ~100-150lbs more than a comparable ICE performance car like BMW/Audi.
They both have their place, though I agree the base model 911 is pretty outmatched by the Tesla. 911 Turbo is a better match, but it then costs $199,000 (4x the Model 3 Performance price) and weighs 3700 lbs, making it feel even heavier. Maybe a used Corvette or Cayman S with a 6MT is a better way to scratch the ICE itch. Having spent some time on the Autobahn, I can see why the 911 (and Taycan's) steering is so slow and ponderous. It's the price paid for stability at 260 km/h. But it's a heavy price, and irrelevant to pretty much every other auto market. It really makes the car feel bigger and less nimble. I really like your point of letting ICE cars still exist in the future, including the V12 and V16 monsters. If the goal is to reduce emissions, these ICE classics emit far less than 0.1% of total emissions. They probably will, just like people still ride horses for fun even though cars are "better" in nearly every way.
I drove a gt4 and Ferrari on a track recently and was happier to get back into my 3 performance. The ice cars were louder and more exciting briefly but then it got annoying pretty fast.

Two completely different purposes. One's the economic commuter. One's the driver's sports car. Few people cross shop them against each other and it shows in the depreciation.
It seems to me that the Tesla ticks so many boxes that it would be a great choice for ninety percent of most peoples motoring, you do not want noise all the time... For the other ten percent, when the sounds are essential, and you get all misty-eyed doing things you wouldn't confess, you have (depending on your bank balance), a Ferrari, Caterham Super 7, Ariel Atom or Nomad, BAC Mono, Ducati Monster... Whatever your fantasy desires... you get the picture!
Rules and regulations let companies make TRUE low production internal combustion cars, but low production is less than 100 units, Porsche make 1000s of 911s every year, it's not considered low volume production, same with Lamborghini Huracan (Temerario now) and Revuelto. Tesla depreciation is because of the $7500 tax credit. The original buyer does not take a depreciation hit because of this.
Good point.
No dude that does not make up for it. I bought a 2023 model y performance new. At 11 months and 11k miles it lost 25k in value that’s over half. That’s even on a trade in where they are incentivized to give you larger number so they can make a sale.
@@dontgetsalt2045why are people letting them go for that though? Are they unable to afford keeping them or do they really hate them?
If I bought a car new with such depreciation I would keep it until the hit was not that big anymore.
@@audunskilbrei8279 well I’m used to having fast cars and I like driving fast in the tolls so the range is not great if you like driving fast. But ya there’s no way I would dump it for -25k with that mileage. People are probably dumping because of charger access issues, driving dynamics, and most likely the CEO’s political views
@dontgetsalt2045 that's not how trade in pricing works lol they give you a low number so they can turn around and resell it for thousands in profit...
We have a Model Y performance and a 992 911 C4S. There is no comparison. It’s like comparing McDonald with a high end restaurant.
The redesigned 3 is LEAGUES above the previous 3/Y in terms of build quality, interior quality, chassis dynamics, etc. 911 is still more "luxurious", but the new 3 forces the driver to reconsider and the gap shrinks.
@@Marc-wv1pr😅 my man there is nothing to reconsider and there is no shrinking gap.

Exactly
You never heard of inheritance ? I've worked hard for my money, would I spend it on a porsche, not a chance, I value it too much.
Exactly. Owning a Porsche is a dream or a feeling of achievement come true... Tesla is just a car you lease to commute to work.
Just posers
@@larryc1616 Posers can and may exist in most luxury car brands from BMW, Bugatti's, to Lamborghini and Ferrari, most high value cars are leased by their "renters". In some cases there are advantages to leasing, but with that said and knowing there are posers in every car brand, Porsche Owners Club and Porsche Club of America are filled with real car enthusiasts who are loyal to the Porsche Brand and love to race their cars, work on them personally, keep them for decades, and really love car culture in general. It's hard to tell who the real enthusiast are just by seeing someone drive down the street in a Porsche. Working really hard to be able to own a Porsche car is something to be admired, but not everyone who drives a Porsche is a cool guy. That can be said for any car brand too.
You buy a 911 for handling not for straight line performance. Its silly to compare these two vehicles

@@leonardschluter7037 I'm not saying it's better but it's way closer than people imagine. I bet you drove the old M3P, not the new one. They are also miles apart. To me, Porsche's are overhyped right now. They are Rolex's - a flex and not that much better at key functions and also lacking a lot of functionality that you get in, say, an apple watch. I'm lucky enough to able to afford both. But to me, I'd rather take an M3P + a manual GR86 + $100k in my bank account.
Apples to oranges test. Model 3 is the obvious budget friendly choice. There now you don’t have to watch his video
No offense but only tesla and EV fans like urself watch these videos for the most part. I take everything with a grain of salt when a clear bias is in play. Now if throttle house , carwow,etc.. made this comparison id listen.
Or better yet drive both yourself. Too many folks with strong opinions that have driven none or only one of the vehicles.
I am striving to have the 911 GTS as my road trip vehicle to visit family while enjoying the drive. As for a daily, the Macan EV is on my radar.

Or, you buy the Tesla like I did and have enough left to also have a Superduke. The Porsche is fun, but it does however not do third gear Power wheelies😁 for me its the best of both worlds. 140000km in the 3 so far, and I still love it.
Exactly. I'm so tired of these EV channels comparing their cars to stuff they cant afford and trying to justify it.
@@wharfbanger I completely disagree with you. I love both my Plaid and my ICE sports cars. Electric for daily and ICE for fun. I can't stand people who hate hate hate. Love it all my dude.

Tesla's depreciate less than Panamera's, Boxers, Cayennes, and Macan's.

Great video! Emphasis on the crucials and do not spend minutes on mindless intros. Love your way of presenting. I considered the M3 performance in August, but with the speed tickets I received with my previous M3 LR (in Norway radar detectors are disallowed), I know the temptations of the Performance would lead me to destitute.
porsche cost of ownership is ridiculous. tesla performance is fantastic.
Yea you are spot on with that. I felt the same way about my M2.

One thing I like about Teslas is they depreciate like crazy. I can buy used ones for cheap. Big thanks to the first owners!
I read that a lot, while in France, Model 3s are some of the slowest depreciating cars on the first 3 years. A Performance loses a bit less than 32% of catalog price in 3 years while most cars have lost more than 40%. Why such an extreme difference with the US market?
They depreciate a lot because of $7500 tax credit. So the buyer is not losing out on the depreciation
Only in the US due to the $7500 tax credit.
@@Vilmir because people in the US are to dumb to know electric vehicles are a good investment.

@Gjeebs. I recommend adding a poll to see how many commenters have driven a new M3P, a Porsche 911, both, or none of the vehicles.
Finally someone blurred the speedometer correctly.
I’ve driven Audis, BMW’s, Porsches, etc. My 2025 model 3 RWD LR is my favorite car to drive, period. It’s a matter of taste.
I would love to see used Taycan vs Model 3 performance 😊
It's coming...

My issue with the engine sound debate is that everyone is forced to listen to it. Sure, you might enjoy that sound, but not everyone does.

We recently bought a dual motor model 3 for my wife, I have to say it’s really very good and makes my 997C2S feel so much less special which surprises me. On a winding country A road here in the UK, the Tesla is huge fun… again surprising
Teslas are crazy fast but they don't corner like sports cars. It really just depends on what your needs are.
Have you driven the new M3P?

Not true.
(The "S" has more range right?)
that trip planner isn’t very accurate but gives you a general idea
You put the golf clubs in the back seat easy peezy 🤷🏾♂️
For a sports car all that matters is handling and lap times. The low-ranging tesla3 can do neither.
You never see a 911 used for Uber. That's like comparing a Rolex to a Casino.

Owning both is the answer - except my 911 is a Cabriolet. Drive the golf cart to the grocery store & office, drive the 911 when you want to actually enjoy driving.

Teslas turn heads? They are at every corner, everywhere.
The spec comparison makes it abundantly clear the Tesla M3P is a no-brainier!
The view of the headlight humps on the bonnet is better on my wife’s Tesla than my 911 😂😱😱😱
They both have their place, though I agree the base model 911 is pretty outmatched by the Tesla.
They probably will, just like people still ride horses for fun even though cars are "better" in nearly every way.

i love these both, Tesla is daily drive to work but 911 is my weekend drive 😁
