      Thanks. I've been a Software Engineer for 20 years. It's a blessing and curse to look at the world as a series of problems to be solved. The solutions aren't perfect, but each iteration seems to be a step in the right direction. Cheers!.

    Only thing I'd like to see added to this exercise is some sort of solar charging capability. It ultimately wouldn't have helped in any functional level, but that extra step of complexity is a nice challenge.

      Excellent point. I always have a Buddipole PowerMini charge controller and 20w folding panel in the ruck. I typically deploy it on the shelter.
      Here's an exercise where I deploy solar. In fact, I went up one of our local mountains and established an 2m SSB contact.

      You can learn a lot from OH8STN's channel. He has spent a lot of time experimenting with various power setups with both solar and LiFepo battery packs. This channel has some very important info as to setting up manpacks with off of the shelf radios. I like the add on protectors for the most common radios on the market.

    Glad to see you with a better antenna for your HT (compared to your digital HT attemps in another video). Brilliant idea on the carbon fiber pole with the slim jim. I've just thrown a line up in tree - but your idea is quicker and easier, and will work when I'm at the beach. Keep up the good work.

    Gaston,
    As always, great info. I put together the FTM 6000 man pack using your suggestions. I have not used the digital part yet, but I'm finding I use this radio more than my base station now, since I can take it with me so easily. I can hit all my local repeaters easily with this setup, where as my yaesu ft3dr ht won't do that unless I'm in the right place. I can throw this one in my truck, much like your RV, and it's it mobile, or on the tailgate when camping etc..., so right now, this is my primary 2m/70cm rig. I'm really enjoying the practical use of this setup, even though I have multiple other radios I could use.
    I'm thinking I need the 817/818 rig. I really like the idea of going portable with HF, instead of just working from home. Keep up the great videos, much appreciated.

      Morning, Mike. I love it when the "manpack" concept clicks for the viewers. I feel like I have been selling this manpack setup for the VHF/UHF side for months with no traction. I love it for transitioning from the shack, to the vehicle and then on foot. I have worked a couple of public service events where the manpack saved the day when the HT could not make it out. Glad to hear that you're seeing the value an using it as another tool in your toolbox. 73's

      I have an FTM-100DR, but have barely used it as I picked it up at a hamfest earlier in the year. The ARMOLOQ owner actually has my 100 and is producing a TPA pack frame for it now. The best part is that it should fit in the bags I am using. My new bag design will also fit the FTM-100. I'm happy to get those juices flowing.

      Glad you could hear it. We really want to try the Metrolink repeater system to see if we need to configure any transmit delays in the fldigi software so that the links have time to come up. The "quick key" is problem on voice for a lot of the newbies, so it would be interesting to see if it impacts digital. Either way, we are blessed and thankful for the time that TBARC gave us on one of their standalone repeaters.

      @@TheTechPrepper Gaston, have you communicated directly with Yaesu US about what you are doing and what you plan to do? I don't have experience with this in the radio industry, but in my experience in other fields, Japanese companies have been very willing to work with individuals who have well thought out criticisms, plans, and goals (for both existing and new equipment). It is something to consider.

    • @TheTechPrepper
      @TheTechPrepper  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@エルネストムーアガルシア Not yet, but I'd like to as I believe I have the perfect set of requirements for a truly powerful field radio. It's basically an FT-818 with a number of modifications. I would love to consult with them as a product manager. If anyone has a contact at Yaesu please let me know.

    • @エルネストムーアガルシア
      @エルネストムーアガルシア 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheTechPrepper I don't have any contacts at Yaesu, but I have seen the US Rep with Josh on Ham Radio Crash Course a few times and, from what he has said, he is interested in working with people such as you. My suggestion would be: (1) Get the contact from Josh; (2) At the same time, while you are waiting for his reply, write a clear and concise summary of (a) what, from your experience and observations, can be improved on the 818 and (b) how you are uniquely qualified to consult on the modifications or spinoff to the next model (as the FT-3 mods led to the FT-5). Keep it tight and short (3 pages max). Don't be vague, either in content or time-lines. This weekend (now!) is the JARL Ham Fair in Tokyo and it will be interesting to see what comes out of the event (I don't live near Tokyo so I'm not attending). The US Rep might even be there for the event, but, in any case, it is best to hit this now: Japanese corporate bureaucratic administration has a long tail...

I know that's pricey, but this is the bag that I wanted for myself and my group for emcomm. I did not skimp on features, materials or construction. It's a big concern personally as I operate in the desert mostly. This is why I look for IP67 rated radios like my VX-6R. The Toughbook is IP55 rated. The dust and dirt is easier to handle than moisture. I'm still waiting for the Japanese radio manufacturers to make an IP67 mobile rig to have a more robust manpack. Historically, I have logged lots of trail time with the various manpacks in Sonoran Desert and have not had issue with dust or dirt, but I'm still on the hunt for a more a robust radio solution.

      Digital is perfect. 1) Often signals that are below the noise floor will still decode 2) you can use less power to get a message through 3) you don't have to be monitoring the radio to receive the message. 4) mesh networks (like JS8CALL) could extend range indefinitely, while providing store and forward capabilities.

    • @TheTechPrepper
      @TheTechPrepper  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We have monsoons throughout the month of July and part of August that come in quickly. I'm solved the rain issue by incorporating an integral rain fly. It works ok, but in the new design I'm experimenting with a detachable rain fly with snaps. This way it is optional and can be more easily dried out. In this scenario, I would have the manpack powered off and just use my IP67 VX-6 HT.

    Have you had any experience with the alinco DR-135T. It has a data port on it but it looks to be just a 3.5 mm jack not the serial 6-8 pin connector. I know you like the use of multiband for your application, but I am looking for a dedicated rig to send digital messages and use voice for comms when we have events where I’m from. In Texas we have the Texas water Safari which is a grueling 162mile canoe race from San Marcos to Seadrift, Tx. Given we are by the river there isn’t much for internet besides our hotspots on the phone. Just trying to get a feel for this as I’m pretty new to Ham radio.

      Great question. I used one of the stakes from the SOTABEAMS Mini Pole Stake Kit. I usually have to use my guy kit out here in the desert. However, we were hit with a monsoon the day before, so this was the rare occasion that I could get the stake in the ground. I personally do not recommend the SOTABEAMS stake kit. For speed we use the 8PSK1000F modem and as a fallback we use the MT632KL modem. The later is much slower, but works very well in poor conditions.

      Ya I'm hoping to maybe use a tablet like a Samsung with the man pack to all in one a base station style setup.

      I was about to let my O.C.D go nuts and get into the BYOG season. Maybe when I retire. For now, I am blessed that I found a local to help out with the final prototype. Cheers, bud!

    My stupid opinion is that 50W VHF/UHF only radio is pointless for manpack. It only gives 3 times the propagation radius of 5W radio. And there's no much point blasting 50W of analog unencrypted conversation for everyone in proximity to hear. Plus, compare weight of a plastic Baofeng and this large rig with metal rails and heavy battery you need to carry with you.
    Love your man-packs with HF radios, sad most of the aren't sold anymore.

      Unfortunately, based on practical real-world applications, you are mistaken. I support wilderness public service events like ultra marthons and frequently the extra power is needed with a j-pole when the operating position is less than ideal

    Heat is why a 706 makes a poor manpack radio. Them little mammerjammers got hot!
    I’m gonna have to stop watching your videos, you play with several gadgets I have to buy. Damn you.

      I tried the IC-706 for a week as a manpack. It did not work for my personal needs and operating style. For me: 1) it was too fragile; 2) the tough screen does not work with sweaty hands; 3) the form factor is terrible for packing out with other support gear; 4) I don't need a waterfall. I am sure it is great for other people.

      @@TheTechPrepper you must be talking about a different radio. The icom ic-706 series....no touch screen or waterfall. What radio are you talking about? Sounds too fancy for my low rent outfit!

      @@ryanjones9305 Oops. I read 705 (IC-705). Sorry, I'm not familiar the 706. The 705 is the new $1,500 rig that's too fancy for my use.

      @@TheTechPrepper oh ya, I’m out for that rig, pretty cool, but way to prissy for stuffing in an old rucksack. The icom 706 series is the 100watt version of the 703 QRP radio. It’s old now. I have the latest version, 706MKIIG. It’s fine for a shack rig I suppose, but it just gets way too hot, especially if you surrounded it with your woobie, a spare pair of socks and whatever else you stuff your ruck with. It gets so hot I have an external fan on mine sitting on the shelf in the shack when I use it. I bet there are a lot of people that are drawn to it because it is an all band, all mode radio that can be easily acquired on the used market for a few hundred. Good for the TOC, but not the ruck.

      Nope. I'm in the US. I am blessed to have a National Forest 400m behind the house. This is a great place to actually test out radio gear and train for real-world emcomm and public service scenarios. I support a lot of wilderness public service events like ultra marathons. Do you volunteer your time to your local community or just make cracks in the comment section?
