They couldn't retreat back to France without going through a German army, so the pathfinding looked for the closest friendly province that didn't require going through a german army - which just so happened to be in Russia

I think what happened was Braun had his army that was fighting in the battle selected and tried to open the diplomacy screen of Russia by rightclicking on them. But because he had his army that was fighting selected, instead of opening the diplomacy screen, he ordered his entire army in that battle to retreat to Russia leading to them just leaving the battle and walking all the way to Russia.
Imagine being the German high command and all of a sudden you hear reports that 600k Frenchmen just ran past your front lines and just started marching across Germany, not even attacking anything, all the while they are leaving hundreds of thousand of corpses littered across Germany because they have no food
