chain reaction, its impossible to keep on riding if the guy in front of you stops completely, and once its stopped its easier to keep going up on foot than trying to get back on
22 percent gradient. Cobblestones. And it's wet. And you've already raced 240km (or thereabouts) and you're tired. These racers are world class athletes. If they have trouble getting up with that combination of factors, it means it's hard. It also means that you and I would have zero chances of getting up under the same circumstances.

1. English is the official language in 67 countries, not just America d-u-m-m-y.
2. It's a phrase that's tens of years old
3. It's in English on purpose, because if they would say it in Dutch, hardly anyone outside the Netherlands would understand it.
4. Why on earth would any American come up with such a phrase about the Dutch? They only care about themselves.

Totally agree, that's the modern day cyclist for you. You would never see hard men like Sean Kelly, Eric Vanderaerden, Edwig Van Hooydonck, Claude Criquielion and more like them do that, the honor and prestige of winning this classic would be enough for them.
