I don't have instagram but my family have been practicing goat style for many generations and taught various styles in the Shaolin temple. My uncle was called Miu Hintermann and added the goat style to the Four Shape Boxing style and thus created the infamous Five Shape Boxing style. He made me and my sister (who is also my aunt now) into his special disciples and recently taught us the infamous blue star sting ray manta punch. A punch I will use on my monitor and will transmit itself through the energy channels of the earth and ethernet itself and will crush your unguarded mountain oysters into dust.

Yes, but they are damn good at marketing. Their biggest AD so far was creating the UFC, by just taking Vale Tudo fights and put it in a cage instead of a ring or mat, and in order to make sure BJJ looks good at the event make sure no Olympic wrestler, Letwei or Muay Thai fighter participate because, they could wrestle, headbut clinch and elbow (they have seen in Brazil how effective headbuts were in Vale Tudo fights against BJJ fighters). Bill Superfoot Wallace, who was the commentator at UFC1 talks about it in an interview with Jesse Enkamp. The so called Gracie Challenges were basically they taking like 30 guys to storm a gym and challenge the master and the students to fight and be filmed (they were too ahead of everybody else in marketing). But there is this story of a Korean TKD master living in Brasil whose gym was stormed by the Gracies who made the same challenge to him. At first he refused but then says: "OK, I'll fight your best fighter, but we will fight in a closed room with no camera and no other viewer, who ever comes out of the room wins the fight". The Gracies pulled out and never came back to that gym.
In a few word the Gracies were bullies but very smart bullies and who happen to be very good and effective at both Martial Arts and Marketing Martial Arts.

Hello, I don't usually comment, but I wanted to tell you that I appreciate you a lot as a martial artist. I think you express many relevant ideas, and I learn a lot from your videos, even when I don't always share the same opinions. As a fan of video games and martial arts, I can confidently say that you're one of my favorite content creators. You also radiate a lot of energy, and I always have a smile on my face when you speak French (I'm French). It's great to see you evolve and explore other sports since you stopped practicing Shaolin Kung Fu, while still continuing to practice it a bit. I'm even more pleasantly surprised to hear your praises for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. As a practitioner of this discipline, I wish you success and fulfillment because it has brought me a lot, and it's really heartwarming to see that it also brings something to others. I stopped practicing kung fu for somewhat similar reasons, even though it was one of my favourite things to do. The master at the local school started pushing his opinion and mystical bs more and more on us students and I just couldn't keep going in such an environment. You and Rokas have an amazing knack for dispelling the mythology and nuance around some of this stuff and clarifying it with facts without making it sound fraudulent. And I would hope that people who watch your content can see and respect that. I've learned so much more about my own personal martial arts journey from watching people like you and Rokas and getting a feel for what can help build discipline, what can help build a sense of community, what can help build a true sense of self defense. Not all martial arts are the same, but in many ways they strive to achieve the same goal -- find a balance where you don't *have* to fight because you can already tilt the outcome of most fights in your favor and people recognize it. I appreciate you, Shaolin culture more for what you've shown me of it, and want to learn and internalize the good lessons from many arts and cultures. Having people who help identify the 'bad lessons' that SHOULDNT carry over is *critical*, or history repeats itself endlessly.

I went to a Wushu/Shaolin school as a kid, learnt a lot of useful things because thankfully my Master Yi Yen had done multiple different types of martial arts. We were sparring we were grappling standing up and, on the ground, doing weapons like rope dart and bo staff, Qi Gong. Unfortunately, I didn't get to attend as long as I would like because of family financials, and I also smacked my brother with padded nunchakus and my mum got scared. We would compete in sparring comps etc. I liked it because it set me up with some good self-defense skills and I explored MMA from there at home. I won my fights at school; I have won my fights on the streets not that I've had a huge amount. But yeah, definitely appreciate how it set me up to explore more types of traditional combat sports. Got me into flow arts as well. I also liked my school because it captured that spiritual aspect, giving us a reading list like the Dao De Ching and Sun Tzu, Bodhi Dharma etc. Our master also taught us meditation which was hugely impactful on my young self. I'd just like to say that not everyone will ever have the chance to go the 'The Temple' and as you've mentioned before there are plenty of monks even at the temple that don't necessarily follow the Dharma, actually pretty far from it. But yeah you can still practice that path, although technically you are supposed to have a master to learn a lot of stuff.

As for continuing Shaolin training: instead of finding a school / gym, would you consider having a middle ground between being a student and instructor, in the form of creating a group or community of like-minded Shaolin kung fu practitioners, who cherish the art for what it is, train together and elevate each other?

  • @skf88

If it's any consolation (regarding the problem with dishonesty), the internet and people like you are slowly providing a greater voice to authenticity in traditional martial arts, so I think we are heading towards a more honest future. ALSO: If you haven't already, I highly recommend showing some of the forms to your BJJ friends. If they're the same kind of martial arts nerd as me, the ABSOLUTELY want to see them. I suggest if you want transparency, then the Bruce Lee crowd would be exposed for what it is: complete farce. You do know amongst BJJ, Judo, etc. the whole group of Jeet Kune Do is seen as idiotic, right? The whole tradition of BJJ, Daito Ryu, Judo etc. was totally lost on BL because of its Japanese tradition. BL did not want transparency; he wanted to sell hollywood a bogus reason for his movies. I suggest looking up the people who left Keet Kune Do and started training in BJJ and what they really think of JKD.

These arts are having an identity crisis right now thanks to bjj and MMA, and instead of acknowledging a need to grow and improve, so many "masters" just double down on the mystical stuff and rationalize why their stuff doesn't work for what they are trying to market it as. It's frustrating, and to hear someone just being honest about what their art is good, and not good for, is a breath of fresh air. Thanks, Ranton! Amitoufo.

I even made a video about all the points what I believe one needs to be doing to be a succsesfull fighter with kungfu... great video ranton🥋

I went through the same situation, I started shaolin kung fu in the early 2000s but over the time I saw how that was more like a mythology for beginners than raw and real fighting. The transition was difficult and slow but I finally let go of that childish mindset and now im better than before. Move on bro!

I've trained ten years of a northern style and I've been trough all you said and maybe some more. That's why people don't believe Kung Fu anymore and stop training, I'm sorry that it's our reality. Practicing forms alone is quite exhausting and a cool way to stay fit. I think it's a strong reason to keep practicing. It's like gymnastics with a badass fighting look. Ehsan Shafiq did pretty well using kung fu against kickboxers, karateka or taekwondo practicioners.

Your perspective is interesting and refreshing as it reflects some concerns that I've had this past two decades of training and observing the Shaolin Temple. I do feel that there are bad apples in every society and it'll be a certain percentage who ruin it for everyone. I also think that you are embarking on another phase of your life and life can only be one of change otherwise it'll be so boring. For those of us who champion the Shaolin lifestyle, we hope to continue to keep it pure and find ways to continue to engage the West so that everyone can enjoy its benefits.

Thanks for your honesty bro! I’ve enjoyed your journey. Being part of a community that portrays itself to be superior and exclusive is something I’ve experienced in christianity. It’s a complete different thing I know lol. But just listening to this struck so many chords. Rules that are a requirement but not for the ones who are practitioners of said discipline. ‘Leaders’ that are revered but should not be. We are all human. The community does not allow you to question things without threats or exile. Fake miracles. I could go on. Really sad. With that said I’m excited to see what your journey in the future!

Whatever happens never stop speaking the truth, man. Thank you for putting pressure on bad ideas and bad behaviour. I’m sorry if it made you a target for certain kinds of bad behaviour or criminals. I hope you won’t let it go and still talk about it with us when possible.. but I do understand everything you said, and what you’re saying about moving forward. you really have had great insights and point of view, I’m happy to of been able to listen to you speak about Shaolin and I’ve learnt a lot. I feel like I see it clearer now (and still love it just as much). I have a lot of respect for you man. I really appreciate your videos and these talks you share as well. Looking forward to hearing your take on everything you’ve been up to lately :) it’s really cool as well. I’m hoping to start boxing at least and joining some other type of martial art (wish it was shaolin but I’ll have to settle for whatever is close and decent for now).
Man I wish I could’ve gone when you did though.. I’m a year younger than you, i wanted to so much then but I just couldn’t.. seems nothing I wanted happened yet. is it too late to get good at shaolin ? Haha I’m flexible already at least. I can’t go to the temple now but i wish I could at least find a decent place to learn. Don’t know of any here.. but I’ll use what you’ve said in your videos as a type of guide to know what to look out for. Hopefully I find somewhere and can catch up on the dreams I missed (I also love shaolin probably the best).
Thanks for the video. Will continue to pray for you (Jesus protect you both and make you successful in your pursuits as well etc). Have a good one :) haha sorry to vent a bit here . Just hope I’m not too late and able to catch up on the things I’ve wanted to do.. as I said I’ll use the info you gave to help sort through everything too. Till your next video ~ have a good one

My teacher once said to me: “You travel your own journey, even if you don’t stick with what I taught you along the way.” I am from Brazil, and have been practicing Kung Fu (my school teaches Northern Shaolin and Sanda) since I was 9 years old. The school is very grounded, the people there are incredibly supportive, and it has helped me tremendously with dealing with my anger issues and become a more disciplined person. I have gone through many different schools of Martial Arts before settling down on Kung Fu, and one of the main reasons I stuck with it was the supportive vibe of the community (and my love for the style of course). With that said, I fully understand and support your decision Ranton. I believe martial arts is a journey, one each person has to make it their own, and follow the path they feel is right for them. If your gut is telling you to drift away from Shaolin to a certain extent, that is the best decision you can make for yourself and that’s all that matters. I’ll continue to support you as a fellow video game enjoyer and martial arts brother no matter where your journey goes man. I love the content you make, be it Shaolin or the regular video game content, your sense of humor is superb and your video game reviews always make valid points, even the ones criticizing the games I particularly love (Kingdom Hearts lives in my heart, even if I agree with you on its many flaws). Anyways, love your content, and I wish you the best on your continuing journey in martial arts.

Oh maan this video reminds me of when I was training ITF Tae Kwon Do...I had so much passion for it for so many years...and everything you talked about is so recognizable...the facad and in my case politics within the tae kwon do branches...(i.e. for example my head master didn't want me to train or compete with other clubs that had different branch of the ITF Tae Kwon Do) And I never really got to develop my skills because our organization barely had any competitions compared to the other branch. But I do agree about the coordination, stamina and balance is so underestimated when it comes to the interest of the people choosing martial arts. MMA, kickboxing, thai and like you started to train; BJJ is todays norm.

These videos in which you share your thoughts on Shaolin kungfu are what made me subscribe and follow your content. You single handedly sparked my interest on Shaolin and traditional Chinese martial arts in general, and it is ever clearer to me that kung fu is the type of martial art I will gravitate towards eventually. I also wish there were good Shaolin schools in my area, unfortunately, esoterobullshit hits traditional martial arts the hardest, and it's difficult to find a down-to-earth master or instructor.

I frist came here because of your vidja reviews, but ultimately stayed for your incredibly honest and humble personality. It's been an interesting experience to find out what Kung Fu is like, going from thinking monks are literal unbeatable demi-gods with wisdom of several hundreds of generations to understanding its nuanced and complex nature, the human aspect behind it like nonsensical marketing, exaggeration of feats, staight up lies and much else. I might even say your videos helped me to grow as a person in a way, showing me that no matter where I go everything is not as simple as my naked eyes see. I, and many other people, love your style of content, be it batshit insane or an open heart-to-heart, and can't wait for your next uploads!

You've always came off as being very honest about your time at the Shaolin Temple. I specifically remember you saying how your instructor got a bit frustrated asking "Why do you practice at a high level but perform at a lower level?!" Something to that effect I'm pretty sure. Which is definitely pretty forthcoming and probably not something anyone would say who's trying to pretend to be a god. It sounds like any high-level school where warriors train: hard as hell.
