I'm a Floridian and I think your 3 reasons people leave KY are not a big deal (except for the education part and even then there must be private school/homeschooling options). I really like your KY videos! It's worth considering especially as FL is getting packed, pricey for housing/rent and I've recently begun to resent the city life.

Property taxes, taxes on your vehicle, city stickers, Kentucky taxes every breath you take, and they tax it at a higher rate. No, it’s not as bad as California, New Jersey and, New York, but for the south Kentucky is the New York of the south when it comes to taxes. We would love to move to Kentucky, Lake or Lake Barkley, but the taxes are just too high… And they don’t even have police protection, or garbage pick up you have to pay for that from some third-party vendor, and do without any police protection.

I just moved to Kentucky from Florida a few months ago. Biggest problem to me is the weather so far. Its grey out nearly all the time and wet. I've had almost no days I can walk around my property when the ground isn't saturated. Prepare to spend alot of time indoors during late fall and winter. I do miss my sunshine in Florida but that's the only down side ive found so far and taxes. People are nicer, stores are cleaner, its not crowded, low crime, affordable housing. The snow is beautiful as long as you don't have to drive in it.

Year 2024. I was born and raised on the same "creek," that my ancestors came through the Cumberland Gap. I raised my now adult children on the same property. We're country people. I've traveled to other places. I wouldn't live in Louisville or any city. I'm a retired nurse. I like Keenland in Lexington more than Churchill Downs. My son and his children 's favorite fun times is riding 4-wheelers (quqds) on trails in the mountains. If I didn't live here I'd want to live at the beach. One grandson has went to the local Community college. He graduated to be a diesel mechanic. He didn't want to go to college. He worked nights at the Coca -Cola bottling plant while he went to school. There's people that retire from that place. He had a class in high school to prepare him. He should be able to get good pay. He understands that he'll eventually have to be trained for the electric engine. I have another grandson that's going to school to be an electrician. His twin sister is doing her 2nd year of college at a state school. They didn't want a big college debt.

I recently moved to Kentucky, and all I see is job openings everywhere. So much so that a good amount of immigrants are getting work extremely quick and the pay is very good $20+.
I have seen a lot of poverty and this might sound uneducated but how the hell is there this much poverty when the cost of living is low compared to the rate of pay? I see tons and tons of apartments at $800 or less. I come from Miami where a 1/1 is no less than $1800 in almost any location and the pay is $12-$15. Yes people live paycheck to paycheck but I guess the hustle in Miami is different than this whole state.

I contacted the HR department’s in these companies (like 6-8 months ago) and there is no college Education required and no prior training either. Granted it’s not the best of the best work since it’s labor intensive and it’s working in manufacturing like Ford, however the work is there. Yes there will be more lower paying jobs that outweigh the higher ones BUT the jobs are there. It’s more of a do you want to do that type of job question.
I know someone working in a slaughter house (yup I know that sucks) and he makes on OT $51 the hour. Again the jobs are there, however do you want to work in those type of warehousing jobs? In Miami the only way you can possibly get $15+ is if you work in management

I don't exactly agree because you did not state much if anything relating to demographics. In other words, WHERE in KY is people moving from? If you stated that, I would guess it would be Louisville more than anywhere else in the state. The next bit of info not included is age. Is it the younger generation moving from KY or the older? Stating lack of recreation would not be correct per se. Kentucky has lots of outdoor recreation. We have dams, Ky lake, TVA, tons of camping areas, and there is simply no better place to be if you enjoy fishing, hunting, camping, swimming, boating, golf, and all outdoor activities. You mention Ky bourbon, oddly, but you left out Noahs Ark, Zoos, and tons of other places to see. Small town's in KY, are mostly much safer than living in large cities. Lots of people retire to KY because there is plenty to do, safe, and the weather is usually not bad in the winter. I think no matter what state you may live in or choose to move to, it all depends on what you want.

@@Melidontcare You don't state what kind of taxes or what kind of car insurance. I live in Tn. In Tn, sales tax is almost 10% and it will eat you alive if retired on a fixed income. Car Insurance on the other hand, is pretty cheap. I drive a 2015 SUV and liability is only $151 per 6 months. That's only $25 a month. Full coverage is very cheap too. Progressive Insurance, by the way. Kentucky is a no fault insurance state and Tn is not. This is why vehicle insurance in Kentucky is high. Sales tax in Ky is fair, pretty much the standard at 6%. Property tax in Tn is cheap. However, Tn does not have a Homestead Exemption. The flip side is, Tn does offer a property tax freeze and also for low income there is some kind of break too. Kentucky has a very good Homestead Exemption of about 40% for those that are disabled or low income bracket or age 65. North Carolina is another nice state but here again, a lot depends on where you live. A best friend of mine lives Southport and it is rather expensive in that area. So the best thing for everyone to do is to look at their own needs. Age, retirement, savings, type of home, etc, all come into play. In regards to the ark, it is an attraction just like any other attraction and just like everyone, you choose to go or not. Oh, one more thing, Tn health care is horrible and ranks 40 in the country. Kentucky health care is pretty good and it ranks 20 in the country.

I moved to rural Western Kentucky from the suburbs of Denver 2 1/2 years ago. I guess the thing I dislike most about Kentucky is the high number of trashy, run down properties I see. What is it here that makes people turn their properties into junk yards? One can drive down any country road and see beautiful, well kept homes and property. Then a quarter mile down the road, find a falling apart single wide with half a dozen junk cars and untold amounts of rubbish haphazardly strewn about. People here seem to accept it as the norm. I personally find it disgusting.

It's that way in some areas of South. Tn is the same way. I moved from West Ky to West Tn this year. I live in a very small town and you can see two or three really nice homes and then you'll see one that looks like a hoarder lives there and then a couple more fair homes and another with their sofa on the front porch and then another really really nice home and then another with their fridge, washer, dryer in the front yard with lawn mowers all over their front porch that is caving in. There should be ordinances about those things but for the most part there isn't. It's one thing to be poor and it's another to be down right nasty.

This is silly. The population grows every year, and the house prices in Louisville are insanely high. Shotgun house in Germantown is $300k.
We recently moved back from Florida. KY state income tax sucks, and so does the weather Jan-April. Schools are very good in many areas. Statewide, not so much. Not sure how they rank them anyway meaning what is a good school.

The Healthcare SUCKS, school system SUCKS, people are LAZY ( there is plenty of employment), people have no common sense and what little sense they have, they dont know how to excersise it, weather SUCKS, food SUCKS, a bunch of clueless "GOOD OL BOYS" are the political system. SO MUCH MONEY and EMPLOYMENT in KY, its the senseless and lazy who are the ones claiming poverty.
She in correct, no funds for parks, specifically local and County. The parks are overgrown and unmaintained. However, even being landlocked, it is an outdoor haven. Plenty of small man made lakes and the Ohio to the Mississippi. BUT, as ive learned from living in over eight States, the grass isnt always greener on the other side. KY is a nice place to VISIT.

I think the number one reason people are leaving KY me included is the cost of living vs quality of life. Kentucky just really isnt a good place to live you could do everything there is to do here in less than a year. Not to mention that all those rolling pastures of beauty are fenced off all the way up to the road. Not much room for enjoyment there. Those same land owners refuse to sell more than 1/2acre so really wants the point. As a renter ky landlords are absolutely price gouging rent here. And that in itself is a huge problem that no one wants to talk about, like how about all those houses for rent for over $1600 a month in a neighborhood that is known for shootings and breakins. Like really the landlords here are very parasitic
