All you ever wanted to know about boom or shotgun microphones and how they can provide better audio in your recordings. Plus, we compare Sennheiser MKH-416 vs AT-897.
It's difficult to truly hear the difference on TH-cam due to heinous audio compression, but thinking the AT897 is cleaner in all tests. iIonically you could buy four of those for the price of one 416!
This is so incredibly helpful. Thank you for sharing this valuable information. You are like a hero to me! I swear I know you from somewhere... have we met?
I just watched a video of the AT 875 and thought it canceled outside sound better, but I see the 897 has a low roll off. So I'm sold on the 897 at this point.
I spent four hours to compose and edit this video and it gets 35 views. I spent 10 seconds filming a stupid potato peeler and it gets 370,000 views. What the hell is wrong with TH-cam? Pivoting this channel in the next few weeks to something more stupid
It is actually a pretty accurate representation of the general audience for each video. $1000 supercardiod microphone will have a NICHE audience. Everyone wants to know how to peel a potato quicker. Your efforts are appreciated. This video is awesome. - Sincerely, niche viewer.
I’m currently testing an AT897 and seems like my cheap audio interface can’t offer enough gain… I’m getting -6Db with the mic fairly close with the gain maxed out. Is it a fairly demanding mic in terms of gain that the preamps need to provide?
@@natancampos92 if you have phantom power in your audio interface, it should provide more than enough gain. If you do not have phantom power, this microphone will accept a AA battery that should provide enough power to increase the gain. I typically run this through a Shure MV2XU connected to my iPhone 16 with a USB-C jack, and it provides enough power for perfect levels.
Gotta be honest, the more time I spend with the 897, the more I like it. Considering selling my 416 and buying three more 897s.
Update: considering selling the 416.
Sometime soon I may stop by and share my wonderful voice on your shotgun microphone.
It would be an auspicious pleasure to host your vocal cords, Mr. Freeman!

Wait - are you my ILLEGITIMATE SIBLING???
Are those RAMEN NOODLE pants?
if they quack like a noodle
WOW that’s a very noticeable difference between no boom and a boom!
HUGE difference right?

@@ngocehgayabebas2118 thanks! Shotguns definitely can help in an untreated room, but they’re no substitute for treatment.
