Henry Scott-Irvine's book on the story of the band says (p28) that it was the name of a cat; owned by an acquaintance of record producer Guy Stevens who suggested it - the band had no idea of the meaning of the words. The book says it was a corruption of Procol Harun, which has one Latin and one Arab word, possibly interpreted as 'light bringer from afar', which seems to work! I think the book is a good read, also going through the story of The Paramounts before Procol Harum were created, all based on the accounts of the people involved.

One of the greatest songs ever written. Gary Brooker had the pipes of a God. I finally got to see Procol Harum live about a decade ago before Gary passed away. Of course they sang this classic and Brooker still had those awesome pipes! It gave me chills hearing it live. And this performance with the orchestra is fantastic also.

I can't believe how good Gary Brooker's voice still is at his age in this video. I was literally moved to tears hearing him perform their biggest hit so perfectly. He was a pioneer, one of the true greats of rock music. They have at least a dozen songs I like even better than this one. My three favorite albums in order, are "A Salty Dog", "Broken Barricades", and "Shine on Brightly", all filled with great songs. Some beautiful ballads, and some hard rockers that shouldnt be missed!

Gary Brooker started out with the voice of an angel, but still improved with time. Procol Harem added the right musicians to carry the message, and this arrangement just perfected the piece. Every time I hear this performance I wish I could have been there, but I am so very glad to be able to relive it with others. This is one of my favorite all time songs and this performance is so magical! I really like your reaction style and think you are doing a great job! One small tip: I know English isn't your first language, but the idiom "it can only get better from here" actually means that it was really bad, and so it has to get better in comparison. Just one of those funny sayings in English that might not translate very well in other languages hahah.
Saw this band live right after this song was released and still to this day it is a beautiful masterpiece. This is the music I grew up on. Yes, Pink Floyd, Emerson Lake and Palmer, King Crimson, Rick Wakeman all of them were top level musicians . The 60s and 70s were an amazing era for music.

It is 57 years now that I am listening to this song and I still seem to get your same feelings -- judging on your expressions and body language, at least -- any time I hear it. I was the concert pianist for the Kansas City Philharmonic Orchestra and played accompaniment for Procol Herum on three occasions at the Star light theaterx2 and Lyric Opera house once. The lead singer, Gary Brooker I am proud to say was a friend of mine. Gary didn't play piano himself in those days. When Gary passed away the musical world grew a bit darker and the void he left will never be filled.

Gary Brooker played with Procol Harum until his death a few years ago. I was fortunate to see them twice and they were incredible. Also, Brooker played piano on George Harrison's "All Things Must Pass" album and was in the movie "Evita" with Madonna. A true giant in rock history.

It was held at the ROYAL ALBERT HALL in London on NOV. 29, 2002 which was the first anniversary of George's death (Nov. 29, 2001) FABULOUS concert playing many of George's songs that HE wrote when in the Beatles and from his solo career. RAVI SHANKAR who was a very close friend of George's and who taught him to play the SITAR, did an opening for the concert playing several pieces on his SITAR with other east Indian musicians. That was magical. IF you have NEVER seen that concert, you should seek it out. It is also available on DVD. I know you can see some clips from it here on You Tube, especially "WHILE MY GUITAR GENTLY WEEPS" you will see Gary at the piano on the left side of your screen.
Love this song. I actually prefer the studio version from the 60's as it is the one I grew up on. This live version is very good though as it shows how powerful Gary Brooker's voice was even as he got older. "Conquistador" is another great song by Procol Harum. Sad to hear of his passing recently.
Procol Harum was always a very underrated band, and thereby, one of the best kept secrets of my youthful musical explorations in the late 1960's and the 1970's. While all of my friends were distracted by The Beatles and the Stones, and Elton John, I was in the record stores, uncovering these obscure musical treasures.

I remember slow dancing to this song at High School dances in the 1970s. Yes, Moody Blues would be similar in some ways. Both bands did utilize orchestras for some of their music. I think you might like the band Yes, another Progressive Rock band who has a classical sound at times though they did it without orchestra, usually as a result of their keyboardists most notably Rick Wakeman. Though Yes did use an orchestra, I believe for the Magnification album which came much later in their career.

This is a classic i remember from when i was a child and only remembered it when Lucy Thomas done a cover of this obviously not with the orchestra like this but its still a beautiful cover you should check out.
I wish those of us who lived as kids back in the 1960s (and through the 1970s) knew then how much we were spoiled by the magnificent contemporary music released day upon day. It was kind of natural to be completely knocked out by a new popular tune once a week or so, and my album collection took on a life of its own. "A Whiter Shade of Pale" is part of the soundtrack of my youth but I have to admit that I'd reached the stage before where I'd heard the (brilliant) original recording too often. One of their other masterpieces, "Conquistador" became my go-to favourite, and I do hope it will soon get the same exposure online (featured in this same concert). Have to say though, the first time I saw this video some five years ago, it completely knocked me off this planet emotionally. This orchestral arrangement is just sublime and I cannot imagine how much poorer our lives would have been without "A Whiter Shade of Pale".

It's so much fun to watch the reactions of young people when they 1st hear this song. I can relate, totally. I saw PH when they were young with long hair and big amps. Beethoven through Marshalls. Thunder and beauty. We were very lucky, we Baby Boomers, to be afforded, as the binding mosaic of our Gen's culture, Procol Harum and dozens of other groups during the youth explosion of the 60's. It was a time of magic, just like this song.
Was 17 when this song came out in mono only . Always thought it was kind of a combination of 'Air on a G String' by Bach , and , 'When A Man Loves A Woman ' by Percy Sledge . If you doubt me- just listen to the latter song on You Tube ! The intro to the original on Hammond organ was also a key component of this song , written and played by Mathew Fisher , who after many years finally got credit for his contribution .

This music when first heard in the UK in the late 60's hit me like a lump hammer and stayed deep within, that I related to standing freezing one winters day in Belarus in 1970 staring at an angelic figure in a doorway. We had never met but somehow I knew that this beautiful young lady was going to be my wife. Another musical masterpiece comes to mind, 'The long and winding road' by the Beatles, but that is now history that after 54 wonderful years we are still together listening to this unforgettable music!

It was held at the ROYAL ALBERT HALL in London on NOV. 29, 2002 which was the first anniversary of George's death (Nov. 29, 2001) FABULOUS concert playing many of George's songs that HE wrote when in the Beatles and from his solo career. RAVI SHANKAR who was a very close friend of George's and who taught him to play the SITAR, did an opening for the concert playing several pieces on his SITAR with other east Indian musicians. That was magical. IF you have NEVER seen that concert, you should seek it out. It is also available on DVD. I know you can see some clips from it here on You Tube, especially "WHILE MY GUITAR GENTLY WEEPS" you will see Gary at the piano on the left side of your screen.
It's called Rock , the band is called Procol Harum , and the singer is the Great, Late Gary Brooker. RIP Gary.

Love this song. I actually prefer the studio version from the 60's as it is the one I grew up on. This live version is very good though as it shows how powerful Gary Brooker's voice was even as he got older. "Conquistador" is another great song by Procol Harum. Sad to hear of his passing recently.
Procol Harum was always a very underrated band, and thereby, one of the best kept secrets of my youthful musical explorations in the late 1960's and the 1970's.
While all of my friends were distracted by The Beatles and the Stones, and Elton John, I was in the record stores, uncovering these obscure musical treasures.

I remember slow dancing to this song at High School dances in the 1970s. Yes, Moody Blues would be similar in some ways. Both bands did utilize orchestras for some of their music. I think you might like the band Yes, another Progressive Rock band who has a classical sound at times though they did it without orchestra, usually as a result of their keyboardists most notably Rick Wakeman. Though Yes did use an orchestra, I believe for the Magnification album which came much later in their career.

The sound of the Hammond organ takes me back to the 60's like nothing else ever could!
The music we had back then was just wonderful and to think they had such limited equipment, real talented musicians.
This is a classic i remember from when i was a child and only remembered it when Lucy Thomas done a cover of this obviously not with the orchestra like this but its still a beautiful cover you should check out.
I wish those of us who lived as kids back in the 1960s (and through the 1970s) knew then how much we were spoiled by the magnificent contemporary music released day upon day. It was kind of natural to be completely knocked out by a new popular tune once a week or so, and my album collection took on a life of its own. "A Whiter Shade of Pale" is part of the soundtrack of my youth but I have to admit that I'd reached the stage before where I'd heard the (brilliant) original recording too often. One of their other masterpieces, "Conquistador" became my go-to favourite, and I do hope it will soon get the same exposure online (featured in this same concert). Have to say though, the first time I saw this video some five years ago, it completely knocked me off this planet emotionally. This orchestral arrangement is just sublime and I cannot imagine how much poorer our lives would have been without "A Whiter Shade of Pale".

It's so much fun to watch the reactions of young people when they 1st hear this song. I can relate, totally. I saw PH when they were young with long hair and big amps. Beethoven through Marshalls. Thunder and beauty. We were very lucky, we Baby Boomers, to be afforded, as the binding mosaic of our Gen's culture, Procol Harum and dozens of other groups during the youth explosion of the 60's. It was a time of magic, just like this song.
Was 17 when this song came out in mono only . Always thought it was kind of a combination of 'Air on a G String' by Bach , and , 'When A Man Loves A Woman ' by Percy Sledge . If you doubt me- just listen to the latter song on You Tube ! The intro to the original on Hammond organ was also a key component of this song , written and played by Mathew Fisher , who after many years finally got credit for his contribution .

Procol Harum is a British progressive rock band that began in 1967, and has always consisted of a Drummer, two Guitarists, an Organist and Garry Brooker on the Piano ! The original members are all gone now, with the passing of Garry ( RIP) !

Since this version has been on TH-cam I've seen it many times. I can't think of any other song that got better with age.

The greatest pop song ever written and performed! This music when first heard in the UK in the late 60's hit me like a lump hammer and stayed deep within, that I related to standing freezing one winters day in Belarus in 1970 staring at an angelic figure in a doorway. We had never met but somehow I knew that this beautiful young lady was going to be my wife. Another musical masterpiece comes to mind, 'The long and winding road' by the Beatles, but that is now history that after 54 wonderful years we are still together listening to this unforgettable music!
