      Not even close. I think I was fooled by the premium price into thinking it would be awesome.
      It's interesting, and some things are fun at first, but ultimately not even close to being worth $4k!
      In my opinion, this is a $300 product.

      If they give me agent avatars that hear, see, and speak to me, and can manipulate the VR environment both presumptuously and upon request, I will give them a lot of money. I'm trying to set up something in VRChat like that, because I believe it will be the best way to introduce people to GPT agents immersively.

    • @stcredzero
      @stcredzero 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes. Apple should make apps for interfacing with VRChat and for displaying data visualizations, and harvest the data for movement and the visualizations. (Not the user's data, but how it's being visualized.)

      The fact that it will not remember your last state,
      and that you can't have multiple Mac windows open (and no external Chrome app (would not need Chrome if Safari allowed multiple profiles)),
      and that you can't wear it for a complete movie without having to adjust it,
      all make this a no go for me. Wait for the next version.
      I don't need someone to 'see' my eyes so remove the glass and make everything lighter (carbon fiber?) IF there has to be an indicator, then a Red LED line when I don't see through and a Green LED line when I do. Much lighter than the glass, cheaper than using passthrough.

    • @RichardGetzPhotography

      To resolve the tension, how about something like a sleep mask that extends the light protection without needing the headset so tight.

    From what others reported, it absolutely does remember all the open apps and their position - if you put it in standby mode instead of disconnecting the battery. Only once the battery is disconnected it forgets that all and has to reboot.

      So, there's no shutoff button that saves the current state? And then be able to remove the shackles of the powerbank wihtout losing the state? It'd make more sense to have a power-off button (saves state), stow away the device in the nice puffy pillow case, get off the plane, or get in a car, etc.

    I worked in AR and VR from 2014 to 2018. I'm SURE that the apple vision pro is a higher quality display than previous tech but none of this is new. The hololens (though admittedly a little slow and clunky) does pretty much all of this.
    While this stuff is really awesome, I still don't see adoption outside of niche cases where outrageous price is acceptable.

    Like you, I bought it on a whim over the weekend. The statement you made that rings most true to me is, "You have to make time to use the Apple Vision Pro". When I am at my desk my Mac Studio is preferred, when I am with the family or even just my wife I feel separated from them. So when do you use it, on a plane, working in a coffee shop, or traveling? All are good use cases, but $4K for those use cases doesn't add up for me.

    As someone who was deeply into VR, I can't help but roll my eyes every time I hear one of these reviews. And I say that mainly because the "Wow, this is so real!" experience, I already had. And I had it, like,TEN years ago. Maybe when I try it I'll be proven wrong (I hope so), but until then, it feels like everyone else (including Apple themselves) is just finally catching up.

      You also could've had the iPad experience 8 years ahead of time with Windows pen tablets, except heavier, terrible battery life, and much worse UX. Vision Pro is definitely too heavy with terrible battery life. But the eye tracking seems to be the same kind of super ingredient, like capacitive multi-touch was. Vision Pro today is only at the level of being useful to developers for the new platform. I predict that won't be the case forever, though.

      Exactly, what a joke my Samsung Odyssey didn't have the high res. but everything else including clickable holograms, giant screens you could place anywhere and scale the size. Sit on a rooftop lodge and place a giant screen in the sky with down below a rocky shoreline. Rooms with 4 monitors with deferent apps on each one. Sure it wasn't wireless and I had a powerful computer, but that was years ago. Apple is so much bs marketing... such as a 200 dollar carrier bag for it, does it even have Apple's logo on it? Apple is so behind in the AI game and there is no room for their financial model and closed econo system. The Apple mirage is finally becoming apparent. Developers are tried getting screwed.

      @@DonaldKramer-qo6gr The Apple pattern is to release late, when technology doesn't just make everything possible, but when it's at the level where a very slick user experience can be delivered. Sure, you could see giant screens in VR years ago. I have an original HTC Vive. It's just that much slicker with today's tech. That's what Apple waits for the first possible moment. That's why their marketing works.

      The thing is the Quest 3 is good for gaming, watching movies, PCVR and running android apps, 3d modded PCVR and so many other things. Apple is way behind on all of that and aren't really offering much more than a gimmick that needs to be expanded on greatly, especially at that price.

    The Vision Pro can track your hands in real-time. I believe I could develop an AI-based solution to address the issue of not being able to see objects like a phone or keyboard in an immersive environment. The solution involves using advanced image recognition to scan the object, and then employing software similar to what Snapchat uses for face tracking. This would be combined with a 'focus box algorithm' that tracks the object’s position and orientation in real-time, ensuring it remains visually consistent within the VR space. Whether it's a keyboard, phone, or drink cup, regardless of its size or shape, you'll be able to see it in the fully immersive virtual environment. Can't wait to develop for this stuff

As awesome as VR is(I have a Meta Quest 2 and love it), the novelty does wear off like all things in life. After then you are left with the stuff that actually are useful that you cannot do in real life. Like VR games, watching movies on a big screen and perhaps a few more things. 16:37. This depends entirely on which light shield you get, and which facial interface you're using. Field of view is highly dependent on how close you are to the displays, and depending on which of the 20 different light shields you get, and the 40 some-odd facial interfaces, it'll vary greatly. This is why Apple doesn't publish field of view numbers, because there is no good answer to this, other than, "it depends."

    • @bujin5455
      @bujin5455 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@joshuadadad5414 Your comment doesn't even make sense. FOV is a function of your eye's proximity to the lens, 100%. This is why contacts completely fill your vision, and they are nowhere nearly as big as the lenses on any of these headsets. Also, other head sets don't have 40 different custom fit solutions (so let's not talk about what other headsets list with their one size fits all designs). When you buy an MQ3, you're getting the exact same headset everyone else is, thus you're getting the same eye-to-lens relationship. Additionally, there are some reports of Apple's headset having equal or greater FOV to the MQ3, and that's because of that person's personal fitment. If the MQ3 "just had greater FOV" that wouldn't be possible.

    I am confused. Increasing immersion and addictiveness of devices is becoming a real problem in life, even with phones. How do we get work done?
    And with AI what will be the value of your work? All of us gen X gamers remember playing Doom, immersively. Then we discovered cheat codes idkfa and iddqd (all ammo/health/armor and invulnerability). After about 5 minutes of that, there is no struggle. The game becomes pointless. The challenge is gone.
    I feel like digital life is becoming like that. If I want an experience it's there. Even now, to a large degree. But then there is no yearning.
    Ironic because I am very often an early adopter of technology, and a long time fan of cyberpunk art. Am I getting old (yes) but is the Pandora's box (that glitters with irrestistable Siren calls) one we look back on and be glad of opening? We'll see I guess.
    The 20th and early 21st century - tech seems mostly awesome, and sometimes terrifying but amazing for the most part. Nowadays I feel a little like a buggy whip manufacturer.

    Hey Matthew. You’re doing it wrong buddy - you don’t need to ‘turn it off’ every time…. Or ever. Just like your Mac, iPhone, and iPad. Just leave it on/plugged into the battery. Unfortunately the external battery makes this feel weird, but its even in the documentation. This way it’s always on AND windows stay open and where you put them perpetually. Just like all of apple’s other products, it’s not meant to be turned off… really ever.

    • @gforcealpha705
      @gforcealpha705 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The device automatically goes into ‘sleep’ or low power mode as soon as it recognizes your eyeballs aren’t inside and will stay like that for like days without needing to be charged. When you put it back on, just like faceID, opticID pops up, verifies you, and all your open windows pop back up right where they were.
      The only thing you have to ‘re-setup’ is any connections to Mac you have. Also you should setup Siri to use ChatGPT via shortcuts (not through the chatGPT app, but through an actual shortcut that calls the API separately) - this supercharges her responses and allows you to just ‘chat’ with her.

      Lastly, after using Vision Pro for a few days, just make sure you’re always grabbing/holding it from the speaker pods and head strap. So easy to pull off the light seal and padding. If you just always grab by the speaker stems, you’ll never have to worry.

    • @gforcealpha705

      Ok One more thing - yes if you have FULL immersion on you can’t see your keyboard. That said, much like you mention, I’ve been using AVP for work - if you put the immersion to like 75% it basically immerses everything like 180* in front of you but you can still look down and see your keyboard and hands. This way you’re pretty much entirely immersed in whatever environment you choose (I personally like the Moon and Hawaii) unless you really turn your head - if you’re keeping windows ‘in front’ of you so you can actually see them, you rarely see the ‘edge of reality’ but can still look down for complex keybinds or whatever.

You will see people walking across the street or driving a car and switch on immersive background then try to sue Apple. If like me you're making a list of crazy here's another, "Taking it outside", Like really, there's no crime in your neighborhood. Definitely never going to take this outside my home or while I am driving. Skiing , Biking Yeah nope.

For most people I see people watching movies on "big screen" as well as perhaps 3D shopping for clothes as common man usage. Using it as a replacement for computer is a bit ridiculous at this moment in time, I just don't see the benefits in coding in VR. Perhaps video editing and CGI though.

    Great review. Very informative and helpful until the end. I really think the piling on Apple for all the social isolation inherent in all the VR headsets is starting to look staged. Especially since all the criticisms were present but not heard with Occulus and Quest before Friday’s Vision Pro release. Apple seems to be the only manufacturer who considered how isolating the headsets could be so they created Eyesight and built in other features. The headset will phase in someone coming in the room and the user, not the device controls the amount of immersion they need. We should ask for MORE and better social connectivity while wearing headsets, not attacking the only company who appeared to give a damn in the first place.

    Improving the passthrough quality will not be solved with a "software update". This is essentially the major difficulty in the entire AR field. They can put a higher quality (higher-res) screen, and the price/compute/power will go up. The blurriness and other effects (especially in low light) are only solvable with massive compute power, which there is no way an AR headset will be able to have in the near future (think: it essentially would need a heavy new Nvidia GPU to run the algorithms to fix that). Apple is very far from solving this (as you said).
    Apple will probably just stick with this being a super-expensive product, and people will probably pay for it. Meta and others will go for the rest of the consumer market with

    I think you're blowing some of the issues way out of proportion. I generally don't have a lot of patience, but you must have none if you seem to think that the 45-60 seconds it takes to start up is a long time. With windows staying open, it would be a hassle imo if every time the device starts up it keeps all your apps open, versus closing them (and clearing up memory space and processing power which happens on boot-up), but I do think there should be an option in settings to allow your windows to auto reopen for people who want it. I do agree with you in that your iPhone should have an auto-unlock feature when wearing the vision pro and signed in to the same apple id. While the weight could be improved upon, it isn't as bad as people make it out to be, and it's important to have a great fit for maximum comfortability, and everybody's head/face is different, so the dual loop band isn't 100% the best option for everybody (including me). Also you can adjust where the solo knit band is sitting on the back of your head (move it higher up or down lower) to have more or less pressure on your cheeks/forehead. However it could definitely afford to lose weight in the future, have an improved field of view, and less lens flare in full immersion. And as far as passthrough is concerned, unfortunately the vision pro is still victim to the technology, and will experience issues cameras have, such as lower image quality and more noise while in low light, but I personally am impressed with the extremely low latency of the cameras. Keep in mind the vision pro does foveated rendering (which only renders exactly what your looking at to save processing power) which is another thing that can cause some stuff in passthrough to look blurry. But this is still a first-gen product, and it isn't perfect and suffers from normal first-gen product issues. However, I've really been enjoying mine, and think it's far superior to anything else on the market and am excited for the future of the vision pro. Now that's not to say that everybody should go buy one, but if you're in a position to get one, I would argue that it definitely could be worth it depending on your use cases and the amount of tech that you're getting. And for people who have not actually tried it, you really should go to an apple store asap to do a demo, because all the videos and reviews online don't do it any justice, and you can't truly get a good feel or understanding of the vision pro until you actually try it out for yourself.

      @RogerJoseph 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You need help justifying your purchase! Quest 3 is a Game console. AVP is a Imac, Macbook air strapped to your head. Not a phone or iPad but a computer. So if you need help deciding then this is definitely not for you. You don't need to watch TH-cam to know what the device can or cannot do. Knowing what the device hardware (which is well documented) can do it's entirely up to you to get it working to integrate in your life.

      just wanted to clear up a few things. The Quest 3 isn’t just for gaming, you know. I use it for work all the time. It’s got great visuals, hand tracking, and it’s way cheaper than the Apple Vision Pro.
      Don’t get me wrong, the Apple Vision Pro has some cool stuff too, like eye tracking and face tracking like the Quest PRO.

    It is a gen 1 product and it will be the worst Apple Vision Pro ever made but it is also a polished, a full product and definitely high end gen 1 product. Should you buy it now? That depends on your pocket size and how much invested are you in the latest and the best technology. Apple knew it is not for everyone hence they aren’t shy to put that price tag.
