I went on the Keto diet to support my husband who was on it. I did not think much of it. The two key ingredients removed from the diet are grains and refined sugar. (Potatos are also excluded too). In the 10 months I have been on this diet, I lost 25 lbs. That is great but that is not what blew my mind. My inflammation and pain went away! I asked my doctor about it and he said that grains and sugar are big time inflammatories! Your video just confirms that I am doing the right thing healthwise. Thank you!

I have numerous autoimmune issues (Lupus, RA, Fibromyalgia, etc) and this lady is absolutely correct about how a good diet can improve your pain level. I stay away from dairy, sugar, carbs, and processed foods as much as possible. Her advice to make these changes slowly is excellent! I will add, however, that exercise is extremely important. I find water aerobics to be highly effective because it is a great movement activity but the water helps support my joints. Walking for 20-30 minutes a day is also helpful. You have to move it, move it, move it! I’ve dealt with this for 19 years now. I tried the doctor/pharmaceutical route with terrible results. I did that for 16 years. The last three years have been amazing. Most days I have no pain/minor pain. If I eat too many carbs or decide to have dessert or something sweet, I can absolutely feel it in my fingers and all my joints within minutes! It always amazes me at how my nutrition impacts my quality of life!

Its insulin levels and glucose in the blood levels causing the problem MAINLY. (not processed/organic etc). The most hypoallergenic food possible is ruminant meat - beef, lamb and more. Eat ruminant meat ONLY and it gets rid of RA, psoriasis, Multiple Sclerosis, lupus and more. But you need to eat a lot of fat (homemade ghee or beef fat) to make up the calories - too much protein is hard for the body to handle.

Love that the importance of nutrition is becoming such a popular topic. I suffered from a chronic illness as a kid and spent a lot of time in hospitals and surgery rooms. I didn’t get better until my mom discovered Dr. Andrew Weil who worked with her to put together a Mediterranean-based eating plan for me (plus some supplements). Same concept... plenty of healthy fats, no simple carbs or sugars besides fruits and vegetables, quality meat, limited dairy, nothing processed. I follow his plan today to manage chronic hip pain, and in addition I control my food mold exposure, so I’m very careful with coffee, cheese, etc. Diet is the biggest contributed to health, and the best way to manage symptoms of chronic illness. “Let food be thy medicine.”

This is an interesting topic. I have fibromyalgia and a long history of endocrine and autoimmune issues, resulting in chronic pain. I'm vegan now and feel my best when I stick to a varied, whole food diet. Tried initially to cut out starch, but that left me hungry and tired, so I added in starches like potatoes (not a problem for me), sweet potatoes, occasional popcorn, etc. The difference was subtle at first, til the holidays hit and I succumbed to eating refined foods like breads, crackers, and cookies. I've been advised by several doctors to drop gluten because of Hashimoto's, though I do not have Celiac Disease. It wasn't until I ate refined wheat flour products for a week after being off for months that the connection to my symptoms became clear. I do very well with whole plant foods, including rice and nightshades (potatoes, tomatoes, peppers), and as they're my favorite foods, being able to keep them in my diet makes giving up gluten/flour products tolerable.

My mother has had fibromyalgia for as long as I can remember and I have just graduated with a degree in biological sciences and I've learned that diets are quite important for fibro and just overall and I'm glad this was covered. However 1 big problem I have with what she said is the "if you can't pronounce it, don't eat it." Thing. Obviously yes, overly processed foods are typically negative for the body, but people need to understand that a good amount of those complex names of ingredients on certain food packaging, is naturally occurring and often are good chemicals, as chemicals are not inherently bad for you. A great example I've found (and was crammed in every anatomy and nutrition textbook on the subject) is 2 Benzenedicarboxylic acid mono. Even after using that chemical in equations and in lectures very often, it still takes me 2-3 times to pronounce it right. That chemical is a very prevalent and naturally occurring chemical in bananas that have several health benefits, just like the other vitamins in bananas. I just want people to stop associating the word chemical with bad and I ESPECIALLY dislike the common phrase "If you can't pronounce it, don't eat it" Thank you for coming to my ted talk. @Aaron Ecklund I follow the thought of “if you can’t pronounce it, don’t eat it”. I read the labels. I’m sure there are additives that are beneficial, but I’m pretty sure that our bodies could/should do without. I just don’t know which are the “bad guys” and which are the “good guys”. So in addition to the no-no list
      No sugar
      No dairy
      No flour
I go old school & I cook from scratch.
I so appreciate your input, and congratulations on your hard work in biological sciences

Interesting. Bananas are one food that triggers not so nice things for me. I believe the lady in the video is right about finding what your individual triggers are. Cutting things out first then trying them one at a time can teach each of us what is or isn't going to work. We all have wondrously different DNA, so why not consider that while certain things will hold true for all, not all things do...?

Milk, sugar and flour, tomato sauces and too much beef for me. Dhal or split peas as well. I’ve had RA for 5 years now and I’m just beginning to understand the correlation between my diet and inflammation.

I would say the other is processed/chemical laden foods. Basically avoid all inflammatory foods. So if you follow some sort of anti-inflammatory diet it can be helpful. As everyone is different, not all foods will effect everyone the same way, so some may only need to cut back on a food that another may need to eliminate completely from their diet. Trial and error. There is never a quick easy fix nor a one size fits all. You have to do the work and sort it out for yourself. Which is exactly why you are watching videos on TH-cam about inflammation and fibromyalgia. I encourage anyone out there to try. I will be. ☺️

@HartsHideaway .. Until your surgeries, try liquid turmeric. I buy mine from Costco(they often have $7 off member Specials), but I see that Walmart also sells it too. Take it with a little food; you're gonna be surprised at how well it manages pain and inflammation! I had both knees replaced within 3 months of each other, and it was the BEST thing I've ever done in life! At 320 lbs, I was terrified! I prayed for a good surgeon, & I did everything they told me to do during & after surgery, and 5 years later I'm still going strong!! It sounds like your hip problems deteriorated your knee. My personal recommendation (I'm not a doctor)Get a decent brace for the knee & maybe a cane, & have your hips done 1st.
Anterior & Posterior total hip replacements(THR)are your options; talk to your dr & see which is best for you. Anterior provides less blood loss & less pain bcz they cut between the muscle plane, but posterial(cutting through muscle) provides better visibility for the dr, hence more precise placement of the implant. Regardless, when it comes to joint replacements & rehab, THR are the breeze of most joint replacement surgeries. If you get your hips done 1st, follow what the doctors tell you to do, and it's a great outcome overall.
This good experience will be the precursor to you getting your knee done....knee replacement rehab can be (WILL BE) painful, but the long term outcome WILL WELL outweigh the 2 or 3 weeks of Rehab pain. "I" stopped taking my narcotic pain medicine the 3rd week in rehab. Oh, btw, during surgery on the 2nd knee replacement, they gave me a nerve block. OMGoodness did it make a BIG difference with pain levels!! Hours after surgery, I felt I could walk to the bathroom on my own! (they get you out of bed within hours of leaving recovery. It's important, & helps reduce blood clots) I almost got mad in the hospital after 2nd surgery because they did not give me this nerve block for my 1st surgery. L🤶🏽L
I prayed & ask 4 guidance, & all went well. The ONLY problem that kept me from going back to work 6 weeks after the 2nd surgery was weak muscles; my knee would give out as I walked. Though I never fell, the doctor said, "Falls are to be avoided at all cost bcz they can lead back to surgery!". I just kept doing my strengthening exercises, and all was fine about 3 months after surgery. God's Speed with you! 🎄👍🏻🎈

I am 70 years old and have no arthritis. My sister is 69 years old and has RA.
I attribute my good health to life changes I made 33 years ago.
I became vegetarian. No meat and dairy products. No sugar, no tea, no coffee and avoided processed foods. Cheese is a food I avoided like the plague. I used alternatives like soya milk , cereals, fruits and vegetables. I used olive oil for cooking and for my salads. I drink a glass of water first thing in the morning with lemon juice. No alcohol, no smoking and no pharmaceutical drugs. I walk a lot. I cut down my meals to two meals a day. I also drink raw carrots and green juices three or more times a week.
Two texts in the bible have also helped me:
"A merry heart is like a good medicine but a broken spirit drieth the bones." Provetbs 17:22
Remember arthritis is a disease of the bones.
"If you worship the Lord, your food and water will be blessed and I will remove sickness from the midst of thee and there shall no miscarriage nor barrenness and I will give thee a full life span." Exodus 23:25 niv

I never liked to eat much of anything in the nightshade family (especially tomatoes), and I switched most of my homogenized/pasteurized cow milk with almond milk. Occasionally would eat potatoes but that was rare. I did make my own personal blend of essential oils and some other oils that I put in capsules for consumption. As for the wine thing....I was in a crap ton of pain last night and before I knew it drank a full bottle of pink merlot and was in far less pain. Seems weird to me too; but then again, I rarely drink anymore so maybe that’s why it worked for me. Most important take away here is YOU DO YOU. What works for one doesn’t work for everyone. Pay attention to what your body is telling you!

When I buy wine I always buy organic wine with no preservatives in it. It's no more expensive then the other wines .I like our daily bread and can buy it at most grocery stores that sell beer and wine. It cost about $10 a bottle .I think the junk they put in to preserve it is bad. Wine as been around for thousands of years .

I am sitting here in tears. 3 years ago I was walking all day and riding rides at Cedar Point. March 2020 I was walking to the sink, a chair was pulled out, and it pushed my knee backwards. I had knee surgery for the meniscus tears Jan. 2022. Surgery helped until I started rehab. Now I can barely walk. I have to climb stairs to get to the bathroom. My other knee is now suffering awful pain too. My pain level is unbearable. I'm 68 years old. Every day the nightmare is worse. I have been living with fibromyalgia since the mid 1990's. I'm desperate for relief. I'm scared to death of my future. I can only stand for a few minutes at a time. I don't know how to escape this nightmare. I can no longer drive a car. Thank you for your videos, they've been very helpful.
With regard to plant oils, it's got to be cold-pressed unheated plant oils, otherwise it's pro-inflammatory rather than anti-inflammatory.
Nuts have to be eaten raw.
Commercial (roasted) nut butters, roasted nuts, fried foods or any plant oils that have been exposed to heat become rancid very quickly and can cause a Vitamin E deficiency, which damages the nuclei of body cells and make them produce more uric acid which can result in gout. Then you have to replenish the Vitamin E and be patient until enough body cells have been replaced for the levels of uric acid to normalize.
Most commercial dairy products have been pasteurized which is also problematic (though in most cases necessary due to the danger of diseases such as Brucellosis). You do get some raw cheeses however.
Sweet potatoes are good for all blood types except Type A (Secretor sub-type -- Type Non-Secretor can eat sweet potatoes without any trouble, but most Type As have Secretor sub-type).
However sweet potatoes limit the absorption of iodine (it's goitrogenic), so one has to make sure to consume (additional) foods containing iodine separately from a meal that includes sweet potatoes.
According to naturopath Peter d'Adamo, author of books such as Eat Right 4 Your Type and Live Right 4 Your Type people who have certain blood types such as O and A should avoid potatoes since (amongst other things) it could cause arthritis.
I'm Type O myself and I found that though potatoes didn't give me any trouble when I was younger, it gave me insulin problems and arthritic inflammation in my forties. Gluten is pro-inflammatory for Type Os.
I've heard that intermittent fasting is actually better for general health than eating many small meals or snacks.

@@bluemoon472 Same for me (though I didn't find out till I was 65). With me it is wheat/grains/cereals. I cut this out (which is very difficult!) and I no longer need any medication and have no joint pain. If you have an auto-immune disease and you have good and bad days, then you are probably ingesting something that stimulates your immune system. This will most likely be a protein and probably it exists in a specific food group. It could be dairy, grain, legumes, yeast or fermented products, eggs or something else. Start on a diet (take no medication during test weeks!) of just a few simple organic vegetables (I used root vegetables and made tray bakes and soups for a week) - result: no RA. Then I slowly added in other food groups and drinks each week, e.g. dairy, legumes, rice, eggs, etc. - all OK - finally wheat (bread/pizza/cake/flour in sauces, etc.) - RA flared up like mad! Keep a detailed journal (you MUST do this), record medication, any tummy discomfort and every meal/drink and your health following morning/day. Good luck!

She says she's not a fruit eater. One of the things that I discovered was that life is a series of trade offs. When I got gout, I found out that eating cherries offset the uric acid from acidic foods and lowered, even eliminated the inflammation. Cherry juice is even better than cherries themselves. But there's a ton of sugar in juice. So life is a chemistry experiment, and you have to constantly adjust the trade offs. I refuse to demonize whole foods like potatoes and rice because the skins on the potatoes offset the inner potato sugars. These Keto people that don't eat fruit are missing out on the skins of the fruit being a great source of nutrition. I lost 35 pounds this year just by tweeking the diet and not eating after 6 pm. Maybe it's not about what we eat, but when we eat.

As we age our bodies react differently to food. Don't follow another person's dietary restrictions, just reduce what foods are your own bloating or pain triggers. Be aware of what troubled (or what helped) your parents, if possible... Because our family often predicts things like lactose intolerance or Irritable bowel syndrome. Those are inflammatory in nature & can progress to systemic rheumatoid arthritis. God bless.

Such a nice patient willing to share her experience and knowledge. I love that she’s making suggestions to address that a change in diet, what ever that means for you, should be considered. I have a rare form of diabetes, so I’d like to share just one thing that I’ve learned. Maple syrup, honey, agave, raw sugar, molasses etc, are all still sugar, with high glycemic values. So that means the body still processes them all the same. Of course I’m not taking away the benefits of say honey and it’s attributes. Stevia is my personal recommendation as a natural, safe sugar alternative. It does not taste exactly like sugar, but once I accepted THAT fact, I quickly learned to enjoy it. Hope this is beneficial to someone out here! Again, I am impressed that miss Jody was willing to come make a video for “The most popular PT’s on the internet!” That took a lot of courage! As a natural bodybuilder, I have done elimination diets and have noticed certain foods cause me inflammation. Signs of inflammation include: water retention, weight gain (from water), acne, and constipation.
I have varicose veins that act like a barometer whenever I eat something my body doesn’t like. They get painful, buldgy, and itchy. I also take weight every day and if I eat something my body hates I will see a 1-5 lb increase in weight overnight, and I will see my definition lines be blurred (water). I will also get pimples the next day.
Foods that I have noticed give me inflammation vary. For instance, broccoli and cabbage are HUGE no-no’s. Oatmeal is out for me (even natural, steel cut). Peanut butter. Even some fruits cause me to retain water. Regular and sweet potatoes both cause me to retain water as well. Basmati rice is my go-to carb. Believe it or not, dairy gives me zero issues. I don’t get signs of inflammation if I eat cheese, eat ice cream or drink a glass of milk.
It is a point that must be made for anyone choosing to see what foods cause inflammation is that what causes inflammation and gas in one person may not do the same in another. She might have issues with rice but that doesn’t mean you will. The point is to experiment and figure out what your unique genetic makeup dictates the best and worst foods for you are.

I have incredibly bad bones and with broken bones that have healed, has left me on a mission to find foods that help with pain. I can tell you that potatoes and vegetables do not hurt my body. I'm not advocating for you to eat them but I have arthritis all over my body. I don't have RA. I do have osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. When I eat sugar or meat, then, it's 2 weeks of pain and it's almost right away with the pain.
I did acupuncture and it helped to some degree. I eat a plant based diet and it's helped me incredibly well.

Am surprised she didn’t talk about Cinnamon andvtumeric. These have been life saving for inflammation and lowering blood sugar and blood pressure levels. Green tea too. I never use anything added to my tea. Just eat clean. Chewing parsley too is a natural diuretic.

Mine started after a virus many years ago. I've tried many things. Gotta say the diet helped me with the pain and fatigue. For me it's dairy and carbs/sugar that I have to watch. Stress is a huge trigger as well. I'm loaded with arthritis. Need surgeries...It's hard. One thing thats not mentioned as much as diet is to get your thyroid checked! I finally made it thru to retirement. When I have bad days I rest. I bought Bob and Brads fitglide to exercise my legs while sitting, it really helps. I wish you luck with everything.

My chronic daily headaches and migraines led me down the path of figuring out what foods trigger me. I got some results through keto and lost weight but it wasn’t until becoming fully carnivore that my pain has resolved, and that includes joint pain, tendonitis of my arm, and breast tenderness. When I slip up and eat some bread or whatever my headaches and breast pain come back right away. It’s not easy but it’s worth it. If this lovely lady went carnivore she could also lose all her excess weight and further improve her life. Or even just stricter keto.

Glad your pain has been reduced but please consider that red meat and processed meat have been long proven to increase inflammation (like C reactive protein) which causes many other serious health issues. You may have reduced your pain but you definitely haven’t reduced your inflammation markers. Please carefully monitor all areas of your health since your dietary choices have been proven to have many unhealthy outcomes.

When my child had health issues arise at the age of 2, we went gluten and dairy free. It helped both of us. This was 19 years ago! I agree about the importance of food. Did the food elimination diet as suggested by a Naturopath Doctor and regular doctor. Acupuncturist was first to suggest going dairy free, and it helped relieve eczema and asthma. So much inflammation we did not know was caused by foods.

I have osteoarthritis in my hand, am the heaviest ⚖️I’ve ever been, and blood 🩸 sugar was 158 the other morning. I’ve tried everything. I really didn’t want try the keto🤷‍♀️. I went to high fat diet and no highly processed food, I ❌cut grains & sugar out.❌It’s been 8 days and my hands aren’t swelling anymore and my arthritis is almost pain free especially at 🌃night 🌃
I cut all ❌sweets❌ I was a grazer as my mom used to tell me. Lol. I’m trying not to do that either. Then I IF 17-18 hrs.
So what I’ve been eating: 🐄🐮roast beef, hamburger 🍔 chicken 🍗 Turkey 🦃 products, 🧈 heavy whipping cream for my tea ☕️ , greens 🥬 vegetables, even deli counter lunch meats & 🧀 I’ll eat blackberries 🍓🫐for a sweet. Last nights dinner was turkey kielbasa and sauerkraut. another night was cabbage & beef stir fry. Another meal My husband made cheese burgers 🍔 no bread so I had two of those with deli mustard & a big 🥗 salad. We usually have a salad every meal. We get the packaged salads🤷‍♀️ we both work full time, so we’re looking for convenience too.
I have a MAJOR 🍰🍪🍦sweet 🍯🍫🍨tooth and constantly there’s candy or pastries in our office. I make sure I have the flavored almonds, something strong like the blue diamond wasabi almonds, habanero, or the smokehouse. Bcz of the seasoning used on them, there’s about 3-5 grams of carbs per 28 almonds. I only eat about 3 at a time.
This seems to be working for me. It’s SO nice to sleep 🛌😴through the night pain free & wake🌅up pain free. Anyway, so far, so good.

Losing weight also helps because the extra fat causes more inflammation in the body.

I was diagnosed with RA and Fybro when I was 24 and I changed the way I ate before it was a trend. I follow law the Mediterranean diet I didn’t start RA medication until I was 42 and I’m the lowest dose of methotrexate. My Dr can’t believe I went that long without medication. Following an anti inflammatory diet and exercising regularly truly helps. If I fall off the wagon I can feel the difference.

Very interesting. I'm glad this is working for her but it sure doesn't work for me. For all of you watching this and reading this, you may want to try different things and see what works best for you. When I gave up meat, dairy, including cheese, and processed foods and went plant based including all of the white potatoes and potatoes of all sorts, rice all colors, pasta if I want it, and fruits, veggies, grains, nuts, seeds, almond milk, and it has been Heaven sent. I've lost weight without trying, and my pain levels have dropped significantly. Starch based foods are filling and are natural complex carbohydrates, andI don't miss the bad foods at all any longer. What she's eating isn't the best diet by far but it's working for her. Check out Drs. McDougall, Esselstyn, MacGregor, and more for their wisdom on healing with foods.

Appreciate the detailed experience from her perspective. Autoimmunity varies wildly from person to person. In my case, mostly ketovore (animal-based approach to ketogenic protocol) works best after years of trial and error. I am so much better and I've come off all toxic meds like prednisone to treat severe RA and Type 2 diabetes. The latter disease stemmed from the corticosteroids!! I yell from the rooftops as often as possible... Meat heals! Cut off the carbs, processed foods, sugars, grains, seed oils. Take back your health.

Yes! All disease begins in the gut. I am still trying to figure out all my problem foods but for me, the big ones are cows milk, eggs, preservatives like sodium benzoate and food colorings, anything processed and I’m starting to believe nightshades. If people pay attention to what they are eating and correlate that to how they feel they will be amazed. Keep a food diary, that will how you greatly!

I have lupus,RA,fibromyalgia I have gone on a keto diet for hat helped but what really helped more was the carnivore diet or go back and forth between with how you feel. I am like this sweet lady I can feel my body flare up more when I eat bad. So listen to your body besides sugar is such a terrible damaging drug! It is like glass going through your arteries. In fact I do eat cheddar cheese, the hard cheeses mozzarella, I do heavy cream. I just limit them, I think it depends on the individual it helped me to weed all food out and add some in little by little.

Interesting and congrats on your success. I went the opposite direction after much research. I was bed fast for ten weeks with RA, told I had the worst case the dr had seen, I’d be wheelchair bound within five years, yada yada.... I went high carb low fat and was off all meds in less than a year and I got ten solid years with zero flares and zero meds. It did come back like a freight train four years ago and darn near killed me. I’ve been on all the drugs except injections and infusions, xeljanz was the last drug. I’ve got it back under control and not had a flare for 18 months or so and no meds for about the same. Congrats again!
