Here are 11 of Ace's signature licks. They are all very similar but are essential when playing his solos. I hope you all enjoy this...STUPID COMMENTS WILL BE DELETED!!! I have typed up a tab for this video and I have also made a Guitar Pro file for the tab...if you are interested just PM your email address and I will send it to you. ENJOY \,,/
Priceless, I love the way the guy says a lot of his solo are the same only the notes are in a different order.LMFAO
I've got to admitt when I clicked this I was expecting some 12 year old kid to teach me some licks that are not even ace freehley's licks that i already knew.but this video was verry helpfull.not only did you show authentic ace licks, you even showd examples of what song they were from.thanks alot and this video has been alot of help.
ace's solo album was a real surprise to many, it's stood up very well all these years on
i think i have seen your talk to me tutorial a while back, i sneak around the kiss stuff on the tube, it's just me reliving my teens many years back now
hey man thanks for the easy to understand and follow instructional video... i don't know what "stupid comments' you could refer to when you are just doing us a favor, but i for 1 appreciate the effort you put into learning the licks and explaining them in a easy to understand way. big ups kid.
hey just wanna say man i really enjoyed this i learned a ton off this can't say enough great job !
Cool cat, coolest animal ever.
Cheers for keeping the Ace flame burning bro!
man, finally someone that makes it clear and plays it well. \,,/
Hey bro! That was an awesome lesson! Those licks are very important in so many styles of music and have been used to create some of the greatest solo's of all time. I think you are awesome for sharing your knowledge with people man, that is the kind of musicianship that helps us all improve and grow! You are great man!!! Proud to call you a friend that's for sure!!! ROCK ON BRO!!! \m/
Great tutorial, Cheers Johan
Rock on warmachine169!!! You make ace proud!! You are doing a good thing! We appreciate your time and effort.
Amen.. And rock on!! I have studied kiss in depth since 1976!! They were my life, and still are.. Especially ace.. Any questions you may have , please ask.. I probably have the answer!! I am a avid Les Paul guy and started playing in 77 when I saw kiss in San francico, the day Elvis died.. I appreciate what you do and the time you spend doing it!! Would love to one day jam with you and talk kiss!!!
is it true that they dedicated the show to his honor?
Great compilation of Ace's signature riffs to get any aspiring lead player going..5*s! Keep rockin' the ACE \m/ 5*s
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. I love doin all these non-stop Ace solos...lol \,,/
WOW Thanks for that ultra kick ass comment. It is people like you that I do these lessons for. Rock n Roll and thanks again \,,/
Thanks a million! I appreciate the kind words \,,/
This is perfect for me. My scale knowledge is limited to the minor/major pentatonic. I play primarily brass instruments, so I do know my other scales and modes. But have not incorporated them into my guitar playing. Ace was always one of my favorite guitar players. He does more with the minor pentatonic than other players do with all of the scales. He is, to me, the perfect guitar player.
WOW Thanks Chris. These licks are pretty awesome. After all the help I have received from the great people I met on here I said to myself..."if these guys will go out of their way to help out a total stranger than I will too". I will teach anything I know...my way of repaying the favor :) I am honored to call you my friend!!! Thanks for the AWESOME compliment...ROCK N ROLL BRO \,,/
Thanks for the suggestion but I have been working on my bends like you suggested...they will be better in my next video and every video to come. I have been bending my stings so much that I think they are soon going to break...LOL
Thanks buddy for the awesome comments on my lessons. Now that you know Ace's secrets...maybe you can give some of his leads a try???
You are very welcome! Thank you for watching!
Wow Shawn...That was awesome!! You RAWK!! Great that you are sharing the music with everyone!! Proud to call you MCF!! Keep Rockin'...\mm/
WOW Thanks, glad you liked it. I am really glad I could help too \,,/
@priffipruff lol That is Puss "The Catman" and she is in just about all my videos :) Thanks for watching
Awesome work dude. Truely appreciate your tutorials and love the way you break everything down and make it easy to follow and easy to play. Thanks bro.
Love your tone as well. Keep up the great work and keep them lessons coming bro.
I’ve been trying to learn Larger Than Life complete with all the leads Bob Kulick tears it up in that song and I’ve been trying to get a tab or someone to teach it cause it’s a killer track the guitar work is incindiary.
Awesome work bro :)
Thanks Matt for the awesome comment on my video. I figure if people go out of their way to help you that you should do the same. I have had some great people help me out when they could have just said NO. I am proud to call you MAF. Rock n Roll \,,/
Excellent instruction video on Ace. What are you using to get that Ace tone? Sounds spot on. Thank you
@vonroden Glad to hear that you are getting your first guitar! I wish you the best in learning how to play it :) I would go with a Gibson style guitar, I am not that fond of the Fender shape. And yeah, Ace has a large Chuck Berry feel to his playing. Thanks for watching \,,/
Nice job warmachine169... Great to know there are people out there who are true ace fans... The hardest thing about getting ace down is his vibrato.. Are you gonna do a lesson on how to get aces vibrato? And how he gets pinch harmonics? Would love to see you do that!! Could you please e mail me the tabs? Thanks and great job!!!
Nice job! Bends are getting much better!
Last post, I swear. But Tommy just fits in so nicely with the band, and no one can help but just love Eric Singer. I love the band the way it is now, and Monster is a great throwback to "Animalize" and even (with "Hell or Hallelujah") the very first, self-titled, album.
Thanks. I have been playing for a little over a year now. Rock n Roll \,,/
Awesome lesson! Thanks!
@warmachine169 thanks....now I can finally play that riff :)
It's funny cause I just picked up a new guitar today and I have to do some guitar tracks this afternoon and I'll definitely be utilizing zine of the licks you taught me! Keep em coming brother!
you said it, Wes!
Cool video! I'd be interested to know your picking technique for these.
@MrDex2727 Thanks so much for the kind words! Glad you enjoyed the vid! Rock n Roll \,,/
Just that the lighter the gauge the easier the bends. You might even want to try a hybrid set, with light on the high strings and heavy on the lower strings.
hahahaha I know you were not kidding but I was. I was only playing guitar for a year when this was recorded and posted. Once I got into the guitar I started to study the songs from a musician stand point I learned an awful lot about Ace and his "licks" and "solos" I did not deny anything and in fact I tell people about it when the topic arises :) For example, Bruce played the bass line on the intro to Within and also played Bass on Carnival of Souls. Tommy helped write the lead to Psycho Circus
@bobguy64 No problem! Thank YOU for watching!
@warmachine169 Thank you for teach
me how to rock like ace!
Wow! Great stuff!! Im keepin' this video for future reference.Awesome video man.
Awesome lesson man! These are all great licks to have in your arsenal. You can tell that Ace listened to a lot of Led Zepplin as he uses a lot of similar licks as Jimmy Page. Hey I saw the kitty running around in the background around 2:36!
Oh by the way warmachine169 it is under boneyard blues!! You'll notice the Les Paul !!
Awesome, thanks for sharing!
Thank you for watching!
LOL I am gettin ready to check out your cover in a min...maybe I will have a listen and see if I can figure out the lead. Thanks for watching \,,/
@sjdss Thanks! Yeah Ace does use the same scale for almost every solo it seems! My top 3 would be in no particular order Ace, Yngwie Malmsteen, Randy Rhoads.
The new generation of rock guitarists play real fast. Their distortion has no character, their notes fade from your memory immediately and there is no character whatsoever. Kind of like the CGI cartoons that all have the same look. The digital age has produced a lot of zombies. Kiss was a great band when Ace had the lead. He was the fireworks of the band.
Nice. Great explanation and examples.
This is fukin hilarious. My fav part is @ 8:52 "little lick there" lolololol!!!! I would hang with this dude for sure, thanx for the lix!!!!
@Tonyp68 Thank you for watching! Earnhardt is a very good friend of mine. I have watched all of his videos. He is a great guitar player. He just posted a cover of 2000 Man from MTV Unplugged...you should check it out :)
Ace's licks are just very common rock licks but like you said, it is just the way he plays em. He has made them his own. Keep Rockin \,,/
@Thesnag69 Thank you for taking the time to check out my stuff and the very kind words. I enjoy helping people. I have met some really nice people on here that have answered every question I ask em. These lessons are kinda my way of repaying the favor :) Rock n Roll \,,/
awesome, thanks for the tutorial.
Good job dude...I've been playing for almost 35 years (primarily bass) but I play guitar when I have to record st home by myself. Ace is the reason I wanted to play in the first place. So when I approach the guitar,I don't really have a voice cause I'm a bass player, so being able to learn Ace licks is invaluable good me cause I'm already a pretty decent rhythm player. I learned a lot watching you. The only thing that pisses me off is when people make stupid ass comments like Ace didn't play and blah blah blah...AHH SHUT THE FUCK UP! Any real Kiss fan knows that a few songs on Alive ll were played by 2 session guys, but that was it! Ace played on 99% on the Kiss albums where he was in the band. If people don't know the facts, they should just listen and move on to something else that they DO know three facts on. Anyway..your good and you've got a great tone from that LesPaul. Is it an Epi or a Gibson?
Thanks for the kind words :) Hard to believe I have been playing 5 years since this video was recorded. That guitar is neither. It is an Ibanez ARC 100. And yea, I have learned that KISS fans can be the biggest cry babies. If ya don't know 100% what you are talking about...shut up lol
Can you show me what's going on for Love Her All I Can? I got the riff down pat, just the chords I'm not sure of. I'm a bass player and self taught but I do play guitar the same way..but when I hear chords,I have to HEAR them and pick it the notes that make up the chord note by note. Kinda takes a while that way instead of someone just going: "It's this chord dude"!
hey man i'm sure ya know but you can change the pickups in any Epi and it will sound better than even the most revered Gibson. it's all marketing really. elliott smith, one of the best songwriters of his generation imo, used a 300 dollar yamaha acoustic his whole career.
onemorebrando sure you can! But be careful cause done Epi's have Gibson pickups in them! Some..but it could be that you just don't like the sound of those pickups...you wouldn't be the first. Ace didn't have stock Gibson pickups in some of those Paul's..you'd actually be surprised at how many of those cats get different pickups as soon as they can..in your case what I'm impressed with is that your ear has gotten to the point where you can hear the difference! I'm a bass player actually but play guitar when I have to record and I figured out stock pickups aren't doing what I need then to. I just picked up an Epiphone Thunderbird Pro and it has Gibson pickups in it and I wouldn't change then for anything! They sound amazing! It's either hit or miss...I hope I helped out brother...keep playing!
i, like some guitar players, am obsessed with 'tone' be it with different pickups, tonal woods that make the guitar, which pots to use for volume or tone controls nut and bridge material, ,metals used in tailpiece, string gauge, attack of playing (pick thickness, finger style, etc.) amps...most of it is in your fingers, i.e. it's the Indian not the arrow. Hendrix could play the crappiest guitar ever and still sound amazing. thanks for your input and you keep playing that Thunderbird (love the shape) too ! ps what's the difference in a large pizza and a bass player? the large pizza can feed a family! (that's a drummer joke, but you can substitute anything) and does that say 'Julliard' in your profile? i don't impress easily. and that is impressive my man.
@brad18672 I am glad that you chose one of my videos for your first comment! I feel honored! I take helping people out very seriously. I can email you no problem and if you ever have any questions regarding a Kiss solo, just message! Rock n Roll \,,/
@vonroden Oh :p I got a loan of my drummer's bass to mess around with...lol Cold Gin is one fun riff to play but Watchin You is one of my faves. It is a great warm up/practice song. It is like playing scales. I would love to see some videos of you rockin out on the guitar! Keep me posted \,,/
so much from so little thanks!!!!!! more please
cool, man i always knew that ace is very blues oriented, but he sticks a different note here an there from the standard blues licks an makes it his own!
Getting my first Electric-Guitar on Tuesday split between Gibson style guitar or a Fender type guitar
Leans towards Gibson (Ace is the man) Ace is very influenced by Chuck Berry is't he?
Could you send this to me too? Always love playing Kiss tunes on my LP but really need to tighten up the solo side of things. Thanks :)
Couldn't get any better your amazing!:)
@Thesnag69 I wish I were alive in the 70's when Kiss were at their peak...a legendary time in rock music! I may have some questions to ask you, thanks for offering! I too would love to jam with you and talk Kiss...that would be most awesome! Rock n Roll \,,/
Very cool sir!
Cool!
Awesome! Thanks so much!
Thanks! I can do the slow stuff and i am trying to do the little faster stuff.
I've been playing for nearly 25 years, and these riffs are the BUILDING BLOCKS for my playing. These are just variations that Ace did on classic riffs by guys like Chuck Berry... Not a bad place to start when you want to learn how to really play rock guitar.
Awesome video. Can you please send me the tabs. Thanks
Thoroughly enjoyed it man:)
Thanks G. I am doing a part 2 soon...I'll keep ya posted. You Rock G!!! \,,/
Continuing, I believe Bob Kulick's little brother, Bruce, was KISS' best guitarist, because on every album he made my eyes pop out at something. And I have to give a special nod to Tommy Thayer, the guitar tech who had to teach Ace his solos before the reunion tour and who plays them faithfully every night now as Ace's replacement. KISS was always about Paul and Gene, and Ace and Peter felt left out, which is the reason for the solo albums and their departure (twice!).
Yeah baby!!! Simplicity is next to Elegance.
@MrTimjim03 You mean \,,/ It means Horns Up
Thank you!
@warmachine169 Thx :P i kind a knows how to play it already playing bass as my main instrument kinda movin' in invert (usally people go from guitar to bass :P
soo gonna play the riff for Cold gin and/or Watchin' you first when i tries different guitars out
ok i have a request...do you know the mid section of She from KISS Alive? I'm referring to that really cool riff that Ace keeps repeating until Paul takes over the same riff...and then Ace continues into the solo.
Cool vid! Thanks!
Nice one very helpfull bro
Glad it helped and that it's still helping people all these years later
Thanks!
you are so good
Great video!! Thanks, it helps me a lot.
@sjdss I like the sound of that \,,/
Did I send the tabs to you yet?
Super stuff....thank you!!!!!
You are welcome!!!
Thanks thats amazing!
Classic ACE!
Thanks!!
May I have tabs to please and thank you
do you have the licks for the solo of psycho circus. I have the gp tabs but they dont sound right. i love playing to the song
Thanks Jeff man...anything I can do to help...just ask. Rock n Roll \,,/
Do you know how to do the "ka chuck ka chuck ka chuck ka wheww" like in the Firehouse solo, but has been used in just about every other solo.
if you think about this these riffs are played in his solo after shock me or 2000 man
hahaha I guess you're not accustomed to being questioned. I understand how the internet works and I want to thank you for not resorting to swearing and childish comments. I respect you for that. Thanks for the mature discussion, lets have another one sometime :) Rock n Roll \,,/
@spacewithace1997 yes they are ;) \,,/
Ace also added '' Obscure licks '' that no other guitarist could replicate
Fantastic lesson Bro! just want I needed - man i sure do need some help on stuff like that - lol - you da man!
Your up to what 4 years playing now dude?
@Thesnag69 Thanks for the kind words, I greatly appreciate it! I love Ace's style because it is not in your face or flashy, it is simplistic but effect. It sounds great and it is not like a lot of other rock or metal styles that simply are about lightning fast riffs or solos. I could possibly do a video for his vibrato style and pinch harmonics. I will send you a link to download the tabs as well. Thanks again for watching \,,/
Oops! One more (sorry!). If you played No. 11 without any reference to whence it came, I could probably identify that as an Ace Frehley lick. You're right in that it's probably his favorite. I think it's his signature riff.
Do u make songs or do cover songs ?
