Love the way you teach!! Very direct and to the point helping me to stay focused. The notecards have been an absolute lifesaver. A few ways that helped me remember lab values: cium think Call 9-11 (9-10.5mEq) Potassium think bananas you buy 3-5 in a bunch and are norm 1/2 ripe (3.5-5mEq) nesium think Magnifying glass you can see 1.5-2 times better (1.3-2.1mEq)
I am in nursing school and I love love love your way of teaching. I have introduced your videos to everyone in my class and they feel the same way. Thank you for all that you do. You are a true academic life safe! Please continue to make more videos.
I love your ways of teaching Meris! Please create more videos! I love how you emphasize important things and not sound monotonous. Really kept me listening on what to focus on!
love from Aga University Pakistan, I regularly watch your videos, helping me a lot. one suggestion I want to give u that please make Nclex questions on each video or topic. at the end of the video so we can practice that aside from learning thank you so much
I have one now being treated. I had no energy and felt really anxious then took some supplements and multivitamins and Immediately started improving. I had no idea what was wrong for about a week.
This is a good class in memorization. However, the reference ranges are only guidelines and not factual limits. There are too many medical professionals that treat reference ranges as absolute. For instance, my PCP insisted that I did not have hyperparathyroidism because my serum calcium was 10.5 (range of 8.5 to 10.5). I guess if it was 10.6 it would have been a completely different story. He also didn't know, and your students won't either, that the reference range for calcium is for toddlers through geriatrics. However, children whose bone plates have not yet closed typically have calcium levels in the 10's. Adults should never have calcium in the 10's. It should typically be in the nines. Anyway, I actually had hyperparathyroidism with a calcium level of 10.5 and a parathyroid hormone level 3x the upper limit as well as osteopenia. I ended up firing my PCP but had the pictures of my parathyroid adenoma sent to him by my surgeon anyway. For the nursing students seeing this, please understand this!!! There are too many "reference rangers" out there already because it's easy. Be suspicious of values near the top and bottom of their respective ranges because diseases do exist within normal ranges.
I thought normal range for Sodium is 135-145. I checked couple books and they say 135 not 136. Also you're always one card behind me. while I'm on card 99 it is 98 on your end.
The cards have been updated slightly since recording these videos :) The normal ranges for lab values vary *widely* based on laboratory, facility, textbook, etc. so we consulted dozens of peer-reviewed sources and texts and went with the most common values. But we always encourage you to defer to your facility or school for specific numbers. -Meris :)
If someone is already taking mineral pill supplements such as zinc , magnesium , calcium , potassium , sodium ect etc through out the day, every single day, is it still necessary to purchase ELECTROLYTES beverages after a good sweat from a gym workout ? or would their body already be covered from the minerals they already take through out the day every single day?
In general, an otherwise healthy person with a well-balanced diet should not need electrolyte replacement for moderate exercise. The bigger concern would be rehydration with water. However, everyone's body is unique, and different medications and health problems may change a person's electrolyte balance! --Meris
