  • Johnny Haymer played Sgt. Zelmo Zale on the television show M*A*S*H from 1974-1979 before moving on to other roles in movies and television in a career in the entertainment industry that would span over 40 years. In this video, I take a look at what he did following his departure from M*A*S*H.

Thank you so much for this video. He was my grandfather and this was a great tribute. You are right James Haymer is Johnny’s son and my dad. He is the most talented musician I have ever met.

Him and Klinger fighting was great humor.

I totally agree! I bet he and Jamie Farr had a ton of fun with those scenes.

@@stephensundstrom6379 The best episodes involved Klinger. I loved his relationship with Potter. Hilarious and heart warming.

Wow. I never knew much about this recurring character of Staff Sergeant Zelmo Zale but he was wonderful. From what I know now, Staff Sergeant Zelmo Zale was the supply sergeant and electrician for the 4077th MASH unit as he was shown trying to keep the camp's generator going until it blows up. Not only that but he was also responsible for repairing the jukebox in the officers' club after the Marines had busted it up. A running gag for Staff Sergeant Zelmo Zale on the show was his feud with Corporal Maxwell Klinger and so on. Johnny Haymer had made his final appearance on M*A*S*H along with Gary Burghoff on a two-part special farewell episode called "Goodbye, Radar". Sadly, Johnny Haymer's life was cut short when he passed away in 1989 from cancer at 69 years old. Otherwise, Staff Sergeant Zelmo Zale was one of the rarest of the rare on M*A*S*H as his recurring character role was also severely limited. Oh man, I would love for you to keep doing some more M*A*S*H related videos and so on. Great video.

Mash had a really good recurring cast. There could have been a spin off like mash from the enlisted point of view

That would have been a great idea for a show, or at least it could have been great to have some of the episodes filmed from the perspective of some of the recurring characters. They did that with Alan Arbus’s “Dr. Freedman”, but how cool would an episode from the perspective of Private Igor Straminski, the cook, have been?

I certainly remember him on M*A*S*H. I loved all the supporting characters pretty much as much as the regular characters you’d see in every episode.💁🏻‍♀️

I was quite surprised that Johnny Haymer was the voice of the Combaticons on the original Transformers animated series in the 1980s. That's one heck of an acting career right there. May he rest in peace. 🙏🏻 Thanks for sharing, Steve, and I hope you post more M*A*S*H related content in the near future! Happy Holidays! 🎅🏻 I have another fun request for you. Can I please suggest you do a "Whatever Happened To..." profile of Belinda Montgomery, best known for her roles as Dr. Elizabeth Merrill on Man from Atlantis and Katherine Howser (mom to the title character) on Doogie Howser, M.D., in a future video?

I didn't know the actor's name when I was a kid, but Swindle on the Transformers is where I knew him from, then later, reruns of M.A.S.H..

What the heck is _Madame's Place_? That would make a good video. I'm only vaguely aware of that Madame puppet, as I've seen it referenced somewhere before.

Yes, I too remember him on MASH and there was quite a fight scene between Zale and Klinger on at least one episode….
Mr Haymer was also in one of Woody Allen’s movies….
He played a veteran standup comedian who was demonstrating his act to Woody while woody was thinking to himself, “what am I doing here?”
Don’t remember which movie it was, I just remember seeing this scene…
    Talented actor
