    I love the Caravelle and I think it's one of the most gorgeous airliners ever made. I had no idea that their front end was that of a Comet's! I got to see one the other day when I was visiting Tucson and the Pima County Air Museum. Sadly it was not in the best of condition from sitting in the Arizona sun.

    Mike, I did flew the Caravell VI-R
    professionally.
    It has a CX factor unheard before, for an airliner.!!
    We even have a special announcement,
    ( remain seated and fasten your seat belts ), when we nedded to use the
    Speed Brakes, to drastically reduce the speed of that
    slippery "fish".
    Wen actioned, no one could remain standing up.!!!!
    BTW, 3-man cockpit.
    Kudos to you, my friend.!!

      Cockpit crew depended on the airline. Many flew the later Pratt & Whitney-powered Super Caravelles with a two-man flight crew.

    (Yeah growing up in the Bronx I used to take the subway down to Polk's hobby Shop in Manhattan.
    The dioramas they had on display, and their huge inventory was just fantastic).

    Polks was that special trip my father used take me to. He was into balsa aircraft and I was building plastic kits. Mid sixties to late seventies.

    Greetings Sir, I remember an old bold pilot who flew the Caravelle in Europe back in the day, he told me the airplane was equipped with a drag cute and pilots did not want to use it because they had to repack it, I believe it’s the only commercial airplane to be so equipped. Great post keep up the good work.

    Hi Mike,
    I saw an Air France Caravelle up close, c.1962 over Old Orchard Boy Scout campground, very close to Chicago O'Hare [ORD]. It was rainy [of course, since we were camping out] and there was a low foggy ceiling. We first heard the engines screaming, then the liner broke thru, 300 to 500 AGL, found the runway, lined up and landed.
    You could see the anxious faces of the pax, thru those weird windows, outlined by the blue striping.
    We thought he was a bit low, but we then knew why they said: ''Air France -- Take a Chance.''
    Never had the slightest inclination to build a 1/96 Caravelle after that.

    I remember playing baseball in a schoolyard in Warwick, RI sometime in 1960 or 61 when what had to be one of the 20 United Caravelles flew low right over us. I’d seen commercial jets at Idelwild but this was the first one I ever saw around home. It was a beautiful plane. Years later I toured one at the New England Air Museum at Bradley Airport. I remember that the cockpit seemed remarkably cramped and it was in sad, unrestored condition but it still looked good just sitting there.

    Nice story on the Lindberg Sud Aviation Caravelle. It's interesting that you were disappointed by the Air France version of the Caravelle in the box versus your anticipated UAL version. That indicates how aviation detail oriented you were as a kid! Yes, United used the Caravelle for those "Executive," men only flights (cigar and pipe smoking were allowed). UAL apparently used to give out "Executive" items to those men as I have an oval, 8.5," clear smoke-dark glass, oval plate with the words, "The Exective," "United Air Lines" and an image of a United Caravelle in the middle of the plate. I also have an "Executive" fish scale!

    Truth in advertising...kind of reminds of the Guillow's wooden models. While I figured (correctly) that as a kid I didn't stand much chance in making a wooden framed balsa model look as good as what the factory showed on the box, it took me a whle to understand that the materials and instructions provided would never yield those smooth, sharp and shiney results. I had to forget the instructions, and improve on the materials, and learn different skills. Growing up is a hard thing...

    Capital Airlines briefly tested Caravelles prior to merging with UAL. I remember watching a Caravelle in CAL livery doing touch and goes at National Airport outside Washington DC. My grandfather was a flight dispatcher for CAL then UAL.

    Beautiful airplane. I remember as a child down at the old Kansas City airport, a United Caravelle would occasionally fly in or out. In my young mind I recognized that there was something different about it: it looked like a DC-9, but it wasn't. The one way I'd remind myself of its unique appearance was the windows. Once I realized that they were not shaped the same as the DC-9, I had no problem keeping it properly cataloged. As a side note, I think United only flew the Caravelle into MCI on Tuesday.

    Nice review of some classic plastic. Somewhere in the loft I have a built FROG Swissair Caravelle. I brought it from Newark Aircraft Museum here in the UK when I was a teenager. It was already built when I bought it.

    Super, Mike! In all fairness, it wasn't just Lindberg that was guilty of changing box art and decals. Aurora was also very bad for this and a couple of examples would include their Cessna 310 and Piper Apache which both featured completely different models of aircraft than what was actually in the box. Was United the only North American carrier to use the Caravelle? It always seemed to get over shadowed by the larger US designs of the time. It's a neat looking aircraft for sure.

    I've never seen this kit with the clear half fuselage. Today it must be an incredibly rare kit to find. I Built both Heller 72nd scale Connies and the DC 6. No extra accessories at all. No stairway, seats or crew figures at all. There should a kit to upgrade these lovely airliner model kits,

    Another fine video presentation Mike.... I don't recall ever seeing a Caravelle here when I was younger living near the Toronto (Malton) airport.... I'm sure you painstakingly built many kits over the years and wonder where they might be after all these years?.... I know personally that all of mine have disappeared over time.... and because of arthritic hands in my old age, I'm not able to continue building kits that have fine details.... I miss the pleasure of building and completing them....

    Very well presented video on the Lindberg Caravelle models Mike. I can just imagine the disappointment you felt when you opened that UAL Caravelle kit, especially after a long trek to Polk's from Long Island. A small consolation at least, that evocative Ray Gaedke box art. Love these videos.

    What a terrific pair of kits. I'm sure the kids of the day wouldn't have been too bothered about the accuracy of the supposed 6R, just us old geezers 60 years later who get pernickety. I've got an Airfix Caravelle somewhere bought years ago in the loft, but have the dilemma of whether to make the thing - if I can find the time - or save it as a collectable asset. The Sabena example mounted on poles inside the Brussels museum is impressive. I have to agree that the example at Pima is looking somewhat forlorn, as is the Viscount nearby, but I guess foreign built airliners aren't exactly their restoration priority. The wide bodies on display there make up for it though!

    Newark almost has the same airlines listed at the photo of the airport that we had at Logan Boston, except for Executive Airlines in place of the TWA shown, the neon signs we had at Boston would have been Executive in place of TWA, since TWA was in the other side of the airport, in Terminal C.

    Another great video, Mike. Who'd thought the nose on one plane, would end up on another.
    Looking over vintage box art, I found one where the artist split the airplane in two, with one half on the left, and the other half on the right. (I'm assuming to allow for text) I'd send you a scan, but don't have your e-mail.

    It’s was good cooperation between us and France to help sud aviation with the caravelle using the comet nose cone I wished our domestic airline BEA had purchased the caravelle stories of in test flights climbing to altitude idling it’s engines and gliding across France because of its clean wing i to would save up my pocket money and go on the tube to a big model shop in Holborn and get what latest model was on sage great memories abd story of a fantastic airliner the day the U.K. and France argue but when we get together and help each other out we produce or help produce great aircraft Concorde was one but the caravelle pure french flare 🇬🇧🇫🇷great video sir 😊all the best ,Mark

    Very interesting as always. Are you however quite sure about that Comet nose section story? That would be a very untypical early anglofench deal. It was the De Gaulle era for gods sake! Inspired by or at best based on exchanged engineering data seems more probable to me. The Wikipedia article at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sud_Aviation_Caravelle states: "SNCASE's design licensed several fuselage features from British aircraft company De Havilland". Both designs would otherwise also need to have the same fuselage cross section diameter. I remember the Caravelle as an almost diminutive short distance connector in the 737 class. Tress chique et petite! The small cockpit in the colour picture and the black and white picture with the ground personel members seem to confirm my memories. But please correct me on any of this if I am wrong. About the shape of the nose: Aerodynamicly speaking it is the only correct one for a subsonic passenger airliner as far as I am concerned! :-)

    Nice program again. I really would have loved to fly this plane as it was so well designed. I have friends who retired Air France pilots who loved as it was very powerful and the Super-Caravelle could apparently self land. But I was too young to enjoy flying it as it did not come to Canada but we saw the BOAC VC10 and the Aeroflot IL62.

      I grew up near Hartford, CT and visited the New England museum a few times. Around 1977 a tornado went through the area and took out some of the planes. One was a 749 Connie, tragic loss.

    Beautiful models. I don't understand how you can resist the envy to build up these marvels. In France, we have the Heller kit 1/100, certainly not as detailed as yours, yet with another typical characteristic of this jet, the rear access stairs.

Aside from the large Lindberg and Heller kits were FROG and Airfix models from England, and odd-scale kits from Revell (SAS and Swissair) and the small Lindberg kit as well (United).     Good video Mike. I have that Caravelle and it is built. It is indeed a beautiful kit! I also have a built Hawk Comet with the revealing interior feature. Even though the models are different scales, they display together nicely!

    I have the Air France lingberg model, must get building it now I am retired. I was lucky to actual fly on Alitalia, Air France and M.E.A caravelles, as a youngster but I distinctly remember the triangle windows . Later in my flying career I actually flew with a gentleman who had actually flown caravelles. It was a check flight but we talked caravelles all the way to Greece and back!

      Train ride was 45 minutes each way, and the store was a bout a 15-minute walk from Penn Station.

    Mike, I appear to have answered my own question. From Wikipedea "The nose area and cockpit layout were taken directly from the de Havilland Comet jet airliner, while the rest of the airliner was locally designed." Layout is the operational word it would seem.

    Didn’t realise the cockpit windows were larger on the VI . Very interesting . My only experience of the Caravelle was the Airfix 1/144 series III in Air France livery . I think they sold it in US with United decals but like your kit it was still a series III

    Great review! I knew so little about the Lindberg kits of the Caravelle jet liners until now, really neat feature on the Air France offering but quite a "pig in a poke" for the United Air Lines offering. Was a proper version that United used ever released? If not then this is something maybe today's kit manufacturers can fix, those were indeed beautiful looking air liners!

      Thanks Max, and no, Lindbergh - nor any other model company for that matter - ever produced the correct kit of a later-model Caravelles. Amazing, when there were so many versions of that beautiful aircraft to choose from!

    Actually, the windows are not triangular but teardrop-shaped. The point is that rounded shapes reduce the risks from metal fatigue causing cracks - later Comet aircraft accordingly had round windows, they were originally square. Did anyone notice that the decals for the Air France model give the wrong registration? F-BGNX was an Air France Comet!     Mr. Machat: Having invoked that mighty name, you should now do at least a little piece on POLKS, a few models from which I still have. Atlantic Humbot, anyone? But truly sadly I did not retain my collection of POLKS CATALOGS which along with Auto World had the best ones ever.

    Polks Hobby !!!, NOW you're talking, that was like 6 floors of ships, trains, planes u-name-it !!! I went with my dad and brother.once to buy a plane kit and instead my dad bought me a French model sailboat to sail in the Central Park sailboat lake...I still don't get it !!!
