    I will be building a few this week. I will use black zip ties, and black cord to camouflage it from thieves. Thanks Trapper.

      Sounds good. Just try to keep away from turtles as they can chew right through the plastic mesh to get the bait. Let me know how it goes!

    Nice video! When made mine i used a piece of 1/8 stainless rod and laced it through the open end(also made a loop on one end of the rod)makes emptying it much faster, just pull the rod out and the whole end is open.Thanks for the video i enjoyed it.

      That sir is a GREAT idea! Kinda of like a long hinge pin. Thank you very much for sharing that. That is a much better way of fastening the end. Thanks for watching and helping make it better. I appreciate it.

    The brand is called "YardGard" plastic poultry netting. It is very common and cheap here in the US. I do not know what is available in the Netherlands. I would search for "poultry netting" at farm supply stores. Other search terms are 'plastic fencing'. Good luck on your search. If all else fails you might try Ebay. If that doesn't work I could send you a roll for my cost. Not sure how much shipping would be. Thanks for watching!

    Excellent job Sir, very creative and effective. one condition you may want to incorporate use,is using a Bird Feed Cage box, from the Dollar Stores. I use them for crab Traps to hold bait.

      The little boxes that hold suet? Good idea! I have 2 that I'm not using-the birds around here don't eat suet.

    Looks good. Good simple cheap design. Crawfish, being carnivorous scavengers, any kind of meat type bait will attract them, some things better than others. Bob Hansler uses dry dog food in his, but if you already have meat scraps that would be a good way to use waste products.

    Great video! I've built a couple of these and just started using them. Wrong time of year, I guess, no mudbugs but lots of small 2 to 3 in. bream and a couple of brown water snakes. I've found I needed to add a small rock to keep the trap from floating. They don't seem to sink well on their on. A tomato stake is good to put them in place at the right angle, a strip of cloth on the stake makes it easier to find. I make sure put in in shallow enough water so the top 6 inches sticks out of the water. In still water this enables anything to climb to the top of the trap for air. Too many crawfish in the trap with no moving water, they can use up all the oxygen & die. You did a fantastic job on this! Mike S. Spring Hill, FL

    • @Meattrapper
      @Meattrapper  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much - the tomato stake idea is a great one - never thought of that! One tip on crawfish spots is bridges or banks that are lined with rocks or 'rip rap'. Crawfish love to hide in the spaces between the rocks. Let's them hunt from safety.
      Thank you very much for the tomato stake idea and thanks for watching! Also - you can make a traditional funnel type fish trap out of the plastic mesh as well. Works great for catching bait.

      The Meat Trapper I been making traps like this for several years and I use a wire frame on the inside of it I get the wire frame from the political signs you see in people's yard I zip tie it all up and it's just enough weight to sink it and since I'm not folding them up at anytime it helps the trap from cloppising in on it self

    Ive read research by LSU saying pillow style fished flat (laying flat on bottom) has been known to be very effective. In their research the trap has 3 funnels on corners and the fourth corner is dumping/bait hole. If someone fishes the plastic netting flat will the trap sink? Given the light weight of plastic how do you keep it stationary fishing your way? Ty.

    • @Meattrapper
      @Meattrapper  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the info. When you think about it, it does make sense that the more funnels you have in the water the more productive the trap will be. The plastic trap will not sink by itself, so I toss a rock in the trap to weight the bottom down.
      I'm not sure how to make a plastic trap lay flat on the bottom with a single rock. It might be better to attach a lead sinker to each corner of the trap to guarantee a flat lay.
      Great comment and thanks for sharing the LSU research.

    What is the brand of your netting??

  • @Meattrapper
    @Meattrapper  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    All cut bait is is a fish (or shrimp, squid, etc) that has been cut into pieces to use as bait. It's just natural bait rather than dog food, hotdogs or man made bait. Thank you for watching. If you have any other questions just let me know or visit my website. Just search for "meattrapper".

    Sir, I'm out of Iowa, when you're setting these traps what would you recommend for locations?? Thanks for the video, awesome info!

    • @Meattrapper
      @Meattrapper  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Location is critical. You want a location that allows places for the crawfish to hide and hunt. A perfect example is a river bank or bridge that has large rocks or "rip rap" piled up. The holes between the rocks allow the crawfish a great place to hide and hunt. Places with root balls or other such areas are great.

    I made one once out of the same plastic netting as you that I had laying around. When using it, it actually floated. I gather that you need to add a rock to keep it on the bottom. Is that something you need to do? Thanks.

  • @brandygrandon

    I would love to make these with my grandchildren. I guess I'm not understanding how you got the openings at the end for them to go in . Do you kinda fold it like you would a gift at the end ? I'm sorry if this sounds silly but I'm a bit lost at that part .. thank you for any help you can give

    • @Meattrapper
      @Meattrapper  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes - that is a great way to put it - like folding the paper on a gift.
      Think of the entrances as funnels. Watch at the 2:00 mark in the video. I have closed the center of the trap together and zip tied the middle shut - but I've left the part from the edge to the zip tied part open on each side. You just kind of shove your fist inward and fold the netting back inward to make a funnel and then use zip ties to shape it.
      I should have done a better job of explaining that. The good thing is, when using zip ties if you mess up it's easy to undo them and redo it.
      Let me know if this isn't clear and I'll try to explain better. Good luck!

    Great job there buddy. I was looking for a video for making the standard chicken wire pillow traps that are used by the commercial fisherman down here in Louisiana. I'd like to make some for this coming season. I would imagine they are made basically the same way you are making yours but they use chicken wire instead of the plastic and hog rings instead of zip ties??? If you can help me out I would appreciate it. I also want to dip mine in tar. thanks for the excellent video.

    • @Meattrapper
      @Meattrapper  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The chicken wire pillow traps are the same design. You can buy plastic coated chicken wire which saves you the trouble of dipping or coating them. The wire is also heavier duty as well. I buy wire from The Fish Net Company in La. Do a google search for Fishnetco to find their site. I like pillow traps because they can be squished and stored flat when not in use. Good luck!

    How would attach a. Retrieve line?

    • @SomeGuy-vo7we
      @SomeGuy-vo7we 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would tie a loop of paracord (550 cord) through the mesh somewhere between the two inlets. That way the trap turns bottom-up while retrieving from the water and no crayfish will fall out.

      Any kind of meat scraps - chicken necks, fish heads, pogies (menhaden) works good. You can also punch holes in a can of catfood and use that as well.

    only problem with these pillow traps is keeping them submerged. they float like a motherfucker. thinking of filling a few dixie cups with quikcrete and tossing them in. I'd recommend using the coated metal wire of the same size. I add another spout on the back side of the trap too and leave one corner to bait and get the crawfish out.

    • @Meattrapper
      @Meattrapper  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those are great ideas. I agree the coated wire is a LOT better - the turtles go through plastic in one bite. I just wish the coated wire wasn't so expensive. Thanks for the ideas. I like the idea about another spout on the back. I'll have to try that!
