    I've been trapping for meat and fur since my Grandpa taught me how to build and use rabbit boxes and squirrel snares that was in the '70s. I still love to learn, thank you for these videos, I know I've learned from your videos, and I'm sure others have also. "Give a man a fish, and you've fed for a day, teach a man to fish, and you've fed him for a lifetime." God bless y'all.

    Everything I learned about building snares and snaring Beaver, I learned from you.
    They hired a "professional trapper" to get these Beaver out of here. He has only trapped pest raccons up to now an bout two 330s to do the job, but he doesn't know how to make a proper set...no caster or anything. So I have been teaching him by doing my own sets and sent links to your videos. I had 2 failed fires last night but made some major changes and got my first tonight at 1:00, but the night is still young. One more caster mound set, and 2 lay down sets with caster under the trunk of the trees. I expect to get more before the night is over. All anyone needs to do to learn how to build snares and trap Beaver is to watch your videos and they will nevet go hungery.😎👍

    Thanks for the information.
    Here in the Bahamas using snares was popular with our grandparents to catch hogs but the information wasn't passed down because
    of how it kills dogs and now just a few trappers do it in secret and are seen as poachers .. I've only seen jury rigged snares with a slipknot.
    You are correct that this could life saving information in a grid down situation ... thanks
    Ps ... a tuna long line clip might work as a better swivel ?

    This whole series is great. Now I tried to order the materials and they are saying I need to be a licensed trapper. Not sure how that makes any sense when I'm ordering aircraft cable, and locks that I could get from almost anywhere. It's not a snare until you put it together...and maybe I'm using it for rabbits :) I have a small games license. Man, Ontario is so restrictive.

  • @stevenemull1
    @stevenemull1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    very informative. thanks for the video series. I use humane traps and then dispatch the animal in the trap. then I have to wash it out. very time consuming and not practical for feeding a family. i have had god luck, 30 squirrels and 1 rabbit in the havaheart trap, but i want bigger numbers. I will be getting into snares and conibears this coming season.

    • @Meattrapper
      @Meattrapper  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Steven Mull Sounds like you are doing great! What kind of bait did you use in the havahart?

    • @stevenemull1
      @stevenemull1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +The Meat Trapper
      I have real good luck with old apple pieces or peanut butter. I put rocks and bricks around the trap so they cannot reach the bait. I also dig a hole under it and place 2 or 3 whole walnuts in there. gives them multiple scents to come look for. rabbits love apples too, but the squirrels normally get there first. my daughter loves eating rabbits over squirrels. snares will improve my rabbit numbers since the squirrels take over the live bait trap.

    • @Meattrapper
      @Meattrapper  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Steven Mull Thanks for sharing your tactics! I've never tried apples for squirrels, but I'l give it a try and see what happens. So far, for squirrels, my best luck has been with black oil sunflower seeds. You can get them in the bird feed section at Walmart. They really love them. Thanks for sharing and take care.

      Steven Mull never cleaned out my traps dispatch multiple squirrels before the actual trapping season started when it was still squirrel season inside the traps and still caught raccoon and skunk and opossums after the season started October 25th skunks are very useful particularly after you kill them I made very good use of my skunk dirt had an opossum the next day

    Thanks for the great instruction. I appreciate you generosity in time and effort. It looks like the traditional snare swivel is something that could be manufactured at home out of 11 gauge or 9 gauge wire. Have you tried to do that?

    • @Meattrapper
      @Meattrapper  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +James Reynolds Thank you sir - that means a lot to me. It does take a lot of time, effort and some amount of expense to make the videos. The family, wife and others all want their slice of time as well.
      You can easily make your own swivels and j hooks using a tool like this: www.fntpost.com/Products/The+Trapper's+Bender
      You buy the tool and then use your own wire - that way you don't have to place an order and pay shipping for just a few dollars worth of parts - especially when the shipping costs more than the parts you are ordering!

    Absolutely superb work. Concerning the trade off between visibility of cable vs risk of being chewed through. From your experience is 3/64" a definite no for squirrel size targets? 1/16" better choice? Understand 5/64" is you favorite but for what targets will you chose 1/16" if any? What % of each would you stockpile in your situation/

    Those are fencing crimps that you use to secure the ends of your cut cable. Looked to be 12 gauge for your wire, just guessing.
    Would have liked to see how each stop lock worked, as you did the cam lock. I guess time constraints prevented you from doing so.
    Great video series to learn from. Thank you.

    I live in NW Florida. Florida doesn't allow the use of body grip and leghold traps so that leaves me with using live animal traps and snares. I trap for food and I do plan on using the hides in the future as gifts. I'm new to snares but not the cage traps so these video's are a big help for me. Thanks for putting these videos out. Where do you buy you snare wire and supplies from?

    • @enterthehunter7336
      @enterthehunter7336 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Robert Taylor why does it have a problem with body gripping traps that even more ridiculous than snares body gripping traps are basically like giant mouse traps and kill the animal very quickly so long as they set on the neck properly the same thing with a common mouse trap I guess Peta did their damage in Florida as they make up lies involving the foothold showing pictures of ones with teeth and a little girls foot stuck in a giant bear trap even though the jaws are welded and the trap could not possibly close
