  • This is a vlog style video on how I "install" some additional SSD hot swap bays and also measure out what cable length I need for all the cables that are going into this build, want to follow along?

    I thoroughly searched through TH-cam for a tutorial for disassembling the same Chinese rack case and I've just found you had the same idea as me but around two years before I did!
    I'm trying to cramp 6x 2.5" disks into the space of 1x 3.5" bay. It isn't as cheap nor good as the 2x solution, but I managed to print a 3D adapter. Now I can take advantage of the 6 SATA ports I have in the motherboard. Nice to see I wasn't as crazy as I though!

    I just ordered one of these this afternoon. I can't wait for it to get here. My current media server is in a rosewill 4U chassis. I don't dislike my rosewill chassis, I just needed more drive capacity than the rosewill offered.

    I just scored an Adaptec ASR-72405 with cables included for under $100.00. This card can be put in IT mode without having to flash the firmware. Man I love my new media server. This chassis is a beast too.

    Exactly what i'm trying to put together, but i'll be using an expander instead of multiple sas cards, i think.(laking pcie slots for more than 2 cards) using some of your links :) Thanks for doing the works/putting out the info :D

    when you start kitting these things out I am sure the cost starts adding up, I buy surplus servers most of the time, but they are cheap here in the states, between $200-400 USD not including shipping, great video :)

      a good 3.5/2.5" caddy/backplane/cage costs around the price of an empty server chassis

    you would wonder how often i has seen and had to use double sided mirror tape in commercial environments...

    god idea those bays you taped, nothing wrong with that even in professional it shouldnt harm any, i googled for the intertech adres, so far i can find they are in the near of Hannover. I have a lot of interest in the case and i am very busy collecting info for the parts i need for my new build, Threadripper ...its not easy to cool i try to find best solutions. Keep going with your build on here! cheers from Holland

      @@IntermitTech i now ordered the 24 bay model, got a good deal even better than amazon de , my build would be very pricely and would need few months to collect everything, but the case is a nice start. i was looking for norco too but seems very outdated and supermicro.... too complicated for consumer builds.

    • @IntermitTech
      @IntermitTech  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@highflowhighflow9896 Nice, that's why I made the video (this one and the one of the 2U case). They are nice cases for an "okay" amount of money but seem much more up-to-date when compared with other (much more expensive) options out there.
      Needing to build it over a couple of months I can certainly understand. ;)

      @@IntermitTech just received the 24 bay-) looks great and quality is better than cases i got in the past , metal isnt so tiny like the Norco around the bays. Also received a nice PSU; Corsair HX1000i , sadly it is a oem model so was missing some cables but ordered a sleeved cable set, not cheap at all but certainly a nice thing. Also a simple graphiccard its on its way ,max 30watt poweruse and would be good enough to play blurays and UHD movies. Next is mainboard, cpu, fans, cooler, m2 drive(maybe), sas cablings... loads of money till its done but will get there some day hehe keep in touch

    Hi there! I have the 3U version and got a different fan connector. Just 6 pins, for each of the fans.
    Love the videos, please give us a update about this :)!

    • @IntermitTech
      @IntermitTech  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A different fan connector? That's odd, I thought all of their chassis used the same system as in my 2U and 4U. Thnx for the kind words though, hoping to do an update video soon,

    The pin header next to the molex for fan power looks different in mine. It looks almost like a usb header. I can't find any documentation for what kind of connector it is. I have a simple work around though. I will just use the fan controller that is in my old rosewill case and hook the fans in the fan wall to that. I will still have pwm fan control with out issue.

    I appreciate the video and the detail on this. I'm thinking of doing something similar with a desktop case. From your experience would a desktop case with 8 or 10 drives work or would it be a cooling problem? Thanks.

    • @IntermitTech
      @IntermitTech  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thnx! A desktop case can work fine as long as the disks aren't packed too close together and there is some form of airflow. If the air is stale the low but constant heat output of a disk can start to "cook" it a little bit, adding even only a gentle breeze from a low spinning fan is often enough to keep it nice and comfortable. My current server is also just a desktop case and I decided to upgrade to something more fancy this time but I have arrays that are 9 years old and still running without an issue. So desktop case no problem!

      if your budget is ok to get a hotswap 19inche case i would do! desktop cases are hell with cabling so much drives, hotswap is the way to go really!

    I am about to order one of these for my media server, which is currently in a Rosewill 4U chassis. I'm going to repurpose the rosewill chassis for another build. While I'm here, is a 1000 watt 80 plus gold power supply enough for media server with dual xeons, 24 10TB drives, and a 8 gig graphics card?

      Actually haven't checked, in a home server I often turn the server off and om after changing a drive anyway. But from my previous testing the AMD X370 SATA controller is actually pretty good!
