I've been watching a few of these particular videos (brake By-pass etc) but how ironic is it that this young man to date is the only guy who actaully showed what is involved when you apply or disengage the hand brake lever!! I had no prior ideas as to what transpired here but this smart young bugger is a jump ahead of the field so obviously & now I know what takes place & how it takes place!! I knew something had to happen in & around the handbrake but had no real idea exactly what??? So well done indeed young man & keep up the excellent communication via your video!!!
Also for other viewers wondering, this method is really only needed for PIONEER radios. If you have a Kenwood or JVC or pretty much any other brand, you can just ground out the parking brake wire. The pioneers need 12 volt and ground sense to kick over the signal. Which is why you need a relay. Best video I have seen so far. Nice job.
Ethan Day many newer flip up and double din stereos need this now such as the Boss double din my father in law has as well as the Dual Single dind Flip up i got for him one is from 2008
I just purchased an Alpine in-dash receiver/GPS unit and tried grounding the Parking brake wire to the unit which allowed me to use the GPS while driving but the DVD player and settings would not work. I installed the relay as described in the video and everything works great
This also worked for my AVH-P5750DVD unit. Thanks for the handy tutorial! To those watching - If you need to ask questions after watching this tutorial maybe you should give baking a try ;)
update this does not work for the newest pioneer AVH-X8500BHS. I ended up having to do the switch instead which sucks. What happens is I was able to find an explanation of this somewhere that says Pioneer sends the signal out too fast to work with a relay. If someone can get this to work with a relay I would love to go that route but I couldn't get it to work.
Tom Severson Real Simple! Just give it a home made time delay. Take a polarized small capacitor, at least 25VDC and around 100ufd to 1000(better)ufd. The negative lead is marked with a black stripe and the (-) sign and will be put on the negative side of relay coil. The other or positive side of cap will go to posititve side of relay coil(85 and 86#'s) with the amp turn on/blue wire. You may also use a 10K ohm resister across as well to provide the drain when off.
Great description. I also have an alpine unit I'm wiring up and am wondering whether the relay will work, given that alpine expects the parking brake to be set, released, and set again, all while the foot brake is applied. From what I understand, the relay load is applied when the ignition is turned on, so it only fires once. Is there a way to make the relay fire twice?
I picked up a relay, and connected the pins to 30, 85, 86 and 87 as instructed, leaving 87a disconnected and it didn't work. In looking at the diagram on my relay, it shows the connection between 87a and 30, instead of 87 and 30 as shown in your diagram of the connection points (I didn't have this video available when doing the install). Should I therefore connect it to 30, 85, 86 and 87a and leave 87 disconnected? I assume so, but before I pull everything out again, I want to check.
Nice vid What8Really!! There are two blue wires, which one goes to the relay? The one that comes from the car or the one coming out from the stereo harness? Same thing for ground, I see you plug only one ground (Relay's pin 87). Thank you!
Not showing in your drawing, but did I hear you say to connect 87 and 87a to ground. Also when the radio comes on does the blue wire to 85 stay hot with voltage, or is it just momentarily hot? If it stays hot then the switch in the relay will move to 87a and stay connected to 87a until 85 goes dead because of no voltage. Let me know
Good video but, not quite exactly what is happening here. You are saying it is a quick on and off pulse but, that's not exactly true. When your relay is off the green brake wire is getting ground through 87a since it is a normally closed connection. After you turn the radio one your relay switches and now 30 is connected to 87 instead of 87a. It just switches from one to the other, it does not go back to 87a until the radio is off and the relay coil loses power from the remote wire.
If the relay is before the kill switch, it shouldn't be a problem. As for the 4-pin hook it up the same, the numbers should be the same. If not find which pins are for the coil and which are the switch. 4-pin relays a single throw, where as the 5-pin (the one I used) is double throw. They both do the same thing just with the 5-pin you can do/add more
One thought that just occurred...not sure this will work...what about jumping across 87 and 87a with the alpine H/U parking brake lead. Effectively, this would always be in the "on" state but I'm wondering if the latency in the switch would send an "off" signal to the H/U, as the switch changes states. Obviously, this is a question of whether the H/U has the ability to detect such a fast timing. Any thoughts on whether this would work? (I have no idea what the Alpine's timing needs to be.)
I have a 2004 Eddie Bauer explorer. It has the DVD player on the roof in the back. Do I still have an e brake wire in the stock power remote etc. harness or is that wire in the other plug?? One plug is the power etc. One plug is for the sub and I guess the other plug is for the stock DVD.
I think in that case a manual switch may be a better option. There is a way to make them fire twice, I just need to research it. Give me some time and I will post a video.
I will admit, I may and most likely am wrong but, from what I understand is the remote wire only sends a temporary signal. That tells the relay and amp to turn on.
Can you draw a diagram for this? The Alpine I have (ICS-X7HD) is looking for a funny sequence of events. The two TR7 modules I bought are not working either. I'd rather not buy a third, but would rather just set it up on a relay or two. Thanks!
The e-brake relay would wok. I'm not 100% sure on the foot brake wire. From what I gather, after reading the manual, is that it needs a power signal. Try hooking it up like it says, along with the relay on the e-brake. It should still work while moving, you just need to apply the brakes (enough to turn the brake lights on). Let me know if it work or not.
i have a double din 7" screen dat does not give picture but audio. when i insert a dvd it shows a sign saying i must stop video play back how do i get picture on my dvd player
I had sony indash installed, when i connected the handbrake wire to negative to radio nagative terminal, why did it not work? Do you really have to connect it to the vehicles body for ground? help me..
sorry had a blond moment there. lol. The ground is connected to the normally "on" terminal of the relay. so when the coil is energized by the remote wire it pulls and holds it to ground. I may have drawn it wrong on the diagram. Just as long as the numbers on the terminals are correct it will work.
I have it connected but it doesnt work. The remote line is hooked up to the relay and i also jumped my 2 amps off of it. Could this be the reason its not working?
No, the amp turn on wire will power up all your relays when wired correctly. The amps have the same relay circuit inside them on a smaller scale but identical. You may have to run the delay.
i have an Alpine ine 920 HD followed the directions but still not playing, mine has a wire to the emergency brake and the brake pedal. i tried combining the two and seperte no luck . Can anybody assist?
My AVH-2400BT is working whitout a relay, just grounded the green wire , exactly to the negatove cable from the radio :), BUT i have problem whit avic-F130, can someone help me ?????thx
Why can I not just ground the handbrake wire..... If all it needs is to be grounded to watch a video via handbrake.... Seems to be simple to ground the wire, why should I buy a relay??
Because head unit manufacturers got smart to that tactic and now their units look for a pulse, which the relay provides. A simple ground doesn't work with many head units anymore.

you dont need a relay
just a momentary interruption of the ground
If you want to have to switch something on everytime. Putting a relay on automatically does it for you.

Nickie Tu it is just a normal single pole double throw or SPDT 40amp relay. It'll be formally called a 12VDC SPDT 40amp relay.
thumbs up love this tutorial best explanation I have seen! :)
Thanks! be sure to share it with other so they can see how it works.

I just follow as you instructions said

If the relay is before the kill switch, it shouldn't be a problem. As for the 4-pin hook it up the same, the numbers should be the same. If not find which pins are for the coil and which are the switch.
4-pin relays a single throw, where as the 5-pin (the one I used) is double throw. They both do the same thing just with the 5-pin you can do/add more
Will this also work for my sony 5500 head unit? Thanks....
Your diagram is shown active. Which confused the hell out of me.
do you need the 5 pin, or can you use a 4 pin?

Do you agree that JVC's can be bypassed with simply grounding the E-brake wire?
I have a 2004 Eddie Bauer explorer. It has the DVD player on the roof in the back. Do I still have an e brake wire in the stock power remote etc. harness or is that wire in the other plug?? One plug is the power etc. One plug is for the sub and I guess the other plug is for the stock DVD.
Hey I'm trying to use your relay method and it's not working. Any tips would be greatly appreciated
do you have a part number or link to the relay?
been looking around and can not find this info.
Thanks

Do you know of anything to use to get my iPhone to send audio video to a 2008 Lexus 460 video display thanks
good job i like

hi i have a pioneer 25000 BT what you mean whit remote wire? is the one that goes to antenna relay control or is the one that goes to ignition switch?
Man, there is a hand breake and a food breake in my alpine iva200, not just one as you said. what do i do with the other one?
what kind of relay do i need for my pioneer avh x15000? i sw they have 8pin, 24 v.....and many more at my store, so im a little confused. Thanks.
good job its helpfull, will try it.
Where can i buy this relay at?
okay did it and it worked but the remote wire was connected to my subbwoofers and now they aren't working... where should I put that wire?
i have a double din 7" screen dat does not give picture but audio. when i insert a dvd it shows a sign saying i must stop video play back how do i get picture on my dvd player

What if I have a 4-pin relay thats from Wolo model 400-R ? And I have an Amp for my subs WITH a kill switch. Will it work
Where do u hook up a bypass that got yellow blue white and black
Hey I only have one ground wire coming from my deck, do I splice it to connect to the relay in the two places??
Yes
is it ok to hook my amp and eq up to it
What type of relay to use
I will and also posted on facebook
I have it connected but it doesnt work. The remote line is hooked up to the relay and i also jumped my 2 amps off of it. Could this be the reason its not working?

Those radios need multiple pulses. DIYBypass, com has those or they are all over ebay
how do i bypass clarion nx500 i dnt have a brake wire
good idea
i have an Alpine ine 920 HD followed the directions but still not playing, mine has a wire to the emergency brake and the brake pedal. i tried combining the two and seperte no luck . Can anybody assist?
My AVH-2400BT is working whitout a relay, just grounded the green wire ,
exactly to the negatove cable from the radio :), BUT i have problem whit avic-F130,
can someone help me ?????thx
What's a " back car + ' wire for ?
seapeddler it’s for reverse cam
Why can I not just ground the handbrake wire..... If all it needs is to be grounded to watch a video via handbrake.... Seems to be simple to ground the wire, why should I buy a relay??
Because head unit manufacturers got smart to that tactic and now their units look for a pulse, which the relay provides. A simple ground doesn't work with many head units anymore.
why not just connect the e.brake wire directily the emergency brake? so the consumer can only use the video while the emergency brake is on?
because if ya got kids who wanna watch a video from it or a passenger for a trip they wouldnt be able to without the bypass.
i just wanna change my damn clock. :( have an alpine IVE-w530 and only audio settings show up
The relay you are showing is not the same as the diagram.
I have Pioneer Avh-x4600BT, so it's not work.
Did you make it work somehow?
Where can i buy the relay?
i have a double din 7screen dat does not give picture but audio. when i insert a dvd it shows a sign saying i must stop video play back how do i get picture on my dvd player
