"Shumi Maritsa" (Maritsa Rushes) was the Bulgarian national anthem from 1886 until 1947. The music was derived from the German folk song "Wenn die Soldaten durch die Stadt marschieren" that was very popular in Bulgaria in the mid-19th century. The original text was written by Nikola Zhivkov, a head teacher in Veles (now in the Republic of Macedonia). The lyrics were edited many times, most notably in 1912 by the poet Ivan Vazov.

There is only two countriest that almost re-conquered (not occupied after treaty but actually fought for it) Istanbul/Constantinople back from us. Russia in Russo-Turkish war of 1877-78 and Bulgaria in 1st Balkan war.
Bulgarian cannons could be heard from the city and it was expected to be fallen in 5 days. Goverment was planned to be moved to Bursa (which was the capital until 1371) and city was in terror. If it wasn't for the overthrown Sultan Abdulhamid II to say "When our ancestor Mehmed II took the city, Constantin XI died fighting for his city. We shouldn't act less than him." His brother at throne agreed and movement was halted. Ottomans sued for peace and Bulgaria accepted. Istanbul was the only land left in Europe until 2nd Balkan war.
And also a lot of people forget Bulgarians had their own empire. Apart from Byzantines and Ottomans these guys ruled over a vast area in Eastern europe.
