I love ambrosia. I also love Watergate salad. My aunt made a desert with jello and cottage cheese sounds bad but it was SOO so good. We called it green fluff
My mom made that cottage cheese fluff fluff too. With orange jello + those red grapes that are kinda got a crunch cut in half, mandarin oranges (can) pineapple tidbits (can) . Marshmallows. It's so good and makes alot BUT is gone FAST. 🤠🖖
God bless you, Noreen!! I watch your videos late @ night when I’m planning meals. I haven’t seen this beautiful Ambrosia in over 30 years. I bought everything I needed today to make it. My 80 year old Mama is thrilled! ♥️💕🌹🌻
Ambrosia may have been the food of the Gods, but this retro recipe will put a smile on your face! Enjoy! Get a printable version of this recipe here: bit.ly/3lJEQHO
Yes, I remember Ambrosia! For a special treat, my parents would take us to the large Holiday Inn that had a glorious buffet on Sundays. (Back in the days when Holiday Inns had restaurants) Ambrosia was always one of my favorites on the buffet, and so was Heavenly Hash, which is similar.
I have eaten Ambrosia all my life. My grandmother added sliced green (white) grapes and diced apples. I love this salad and we make it quite often in the summer. You can't be southern without ambrosia, greens, fried chicken, mashed potatoes and cornbread.
I'm from Southern IL and my husband is from NC. I grew up on it, he didn't. He says because I grew up in VA. I said no only ate it at grandma's in IL. Grandma also made 'pink stuff', strawberry or raspberry jello, cottage cheese, crushed pineapples, cool whip and marshmallows.
This jogged my memory. I remember having it at fancy suppers like baby showers, church and such. Had almost forgot it. I remember loving it, but before the internet, recipes where harder to come by. You actually had to get the recipe from someone. My mom had one cookbook and it was betty crocker. I used to drool over the cookie and candy section as a child. Thank God for that section, it was the most used.
I have had this at least once a year(at Christmas)for as long as I can remember, and I am 68. But this year I'm making it for thanksgiving. Because where we are going, I'm not sure these people have had it. Don't know for sure....but they are getting it this year! As someone down below mentioned, we too called it a 5 cup salad. One cup of each of sour cream, mandarin oranges, pineapple chunks, coconut flakes and white marshmallows. But I am going to add some chopped pecans. And like my mother, I will decorate the top with cherries. Oh, we ate this with our meal, not for dessert. So many young people are missing out on some good old recipes. It's okay sometimes to modernize a recipe or two....but you just can't beat the originals.
One of my fondest memories is of my Momma's lime jello salad. My sister and I make it every holiday. I could almost get tears in my eyes when I taste it! Thank you for bringing these recipes back.
Exactly how I make my ambrosia. I do add the grapes and chopped pecans, though. I've taken it to family dinners several times. The kids especially love it.
My Mom did this with either marshmallow. I liked it so much that I've topped summer cakes with it. I love a 13"x9" pineapple cake with this over the top! Its amazing and kids loved it!!! Vanilla cake is a good choice too.
Going to stop at Walmart in the morning and get the stuff to make this. Been years since I've had this and always loved it! I would also love some Jello recipes, so great for the summer...BRING BACK JELLO!
I grew up eating Ambrosia Salad ... we looked forward to having it for dessert. Yum ... thanks for sharing the recipe so I can relive some sweet memories.
Love this stuff Mom made it with fruit cocktail. We had mostly on Christmas and Thanksgiving. I am from KY so remember most of the southern dishes. I also thank you for the retro recipes bring back quite a few memories of my grandma.
My mom used to make this, but with white marshmallows that had to be cut into bits back then. Haven't had it in 5 decades! Thanks for bringing it back, Noreen! : )
You did introduced me to the Ambrosia Salad. I made for school two years ago and everyone loved it. The only thing I replaced the sour cream with plain yogurt. I'm making another one this year 2022 for the graduation class and will try with the sour cream. Thank you.
Yum, I love ambrosia salad! Brings back so many memories! I haven’t had it in years, I’m thinking it’s time for this classic to make a revival at the next family bbq! Thanks for stirring up the memories 😀
I never had ambrosia salad until I saw your recipe. I made for the end of the first school year. Everybody loved it. Since I don't like sour cream I used plain yugourt. I'm from Puerto Rico/NY, now I'm in the south. It was requested for our last day before graduation.
Very nice Ambrosia💗...my mom's recipe was made with sour cream, cool whip, shredded cheddar cheese, small white marshmallows, canned mandarin slices, sweet coconut flakes, canned fruit cocktail and chopped walnuts! She got it from a magazine in the 70's, but it did taste very good......
I hated this stuff so much as a kid and still hate it but this made me smile and shed a little tear because this reminded me of my nana and holidays as a kid. Thank you Noreen ❤️
Hi Noreen...I grew up in Canada during the 50's & 60's and absolutely no wedding/baby shower was complete without Ambrosia Salad, although we knew it as "honeymoon" salad. Sooooooooo delicious.
I love ambrosia salad. It's so refreshing on a summer night like you said. Mom used to make it once in a while and it was a big hit.Such wonderful memories you shared. Those were the days my friend I thought they'd never end! Simple was better. Tfs God bless you all.
Grew up with ambrosia for dessert but bought bag of oranges and cut up. Added coconut, raisins, pecans, cherries but not whipped topping. look forward to trying this.

We also used fresh oranges & apples peeled and cut small also with green grapes and the other items you have. Sometimes mom would chop up pecans to add. She always used white marshmallows to us the colored one gave it a different taste.
I would sure try this recipe but with white marshmallows, we don’t get colored ones where I live. I love jello & I have a jello cookbook with beautiful recipes , I almost forgot about it until you mentioned the word jello. Thanks for sharing & God bless!

I remember this dessert as a child. YUM! Had to eat everything on my dinner plate before I could get a bowl full...memories.
