My mom sold my collection at a yard sale when I was a teenager. I had the original Grayskull, Fright Zone, Snake Mountain, and over 80 figures. It makes me cry every time I think about it. No doubt in my mind, I would still be playing with it today as a 32 year old man.
What made the vintage toys so cool was the packaging artwork. You would get lost for hours and days just looking at the artwork. So much going on. A lot of details. A lot of use of different colors. A lot of times I would hold the package more than the actual toy.
You can tell how much love there is for these toys when he opens the jawbridge using He-man holding his sword, rather than the guy just poking the sword in like a key. If He-man himself doesn't do it, it doesn't count!

It's 2am and I'm watching the greatest review of 2013. Superb Dan, superb.
I remember my father made me one in cardboard alike and he drew the skull and detailed the teeth of greyskull, and it had two sides as well as a front and with snake windows. It was not a real play-set, but it could be used in any way you wanted and store several figures inside. Back in the 80'ties the Greyskull castle cost a lot, so we had to build on our own. My father made me a play-set with the snake mountain as well, with a door that opened with a string. Very simple :-) This is one great play-set and maybe now a days i'll consider buying one, maybe :-)
MBJ861 that was really nice of him, reminds me of the time when I would play inside my home made Robin Hood hideaway for hours on end, in my bedroom (I'm a 90s kid) sadly most kids today would not except home made toys, heck they don't even play with toys any more! Which I think is tragic...
So one fact about the dungeon. I’m not saying it was designed to be small but, if you ever been to a real European castle dungeon, they actually are very small. It was meant for the prisoner to be uncomfortable, so you would have to be bent somewhat to fit in one.
Can't wait for it man , it looks great ! I might actually keep one boxed. I ordered 3 two for me and one I actually will set up for display at a local boys home where I always send one of my three subbed items! Can't wait
All these year later, and I can't express enough how much I love the in jokes with The (self proclaimed) Mighty Spector from putting his head on one of the elevator spikes, to having Mosquitor kicking the crap out of him at the end! Hilarious!!
Wow. This. Is. EPIC!! Thank you, Dan for this wonderful and thorough video review!!! I do believe a lot of MOTU fans will be salivating for this playset after watching this video! Great job and keep up the excellent work, Dan! :)
God i love the fact that i can go back and watch these amazing videos ! I'm a new he man fan fell in love with it after Netflix of course but i had all the cool and rare ones as a kid but i was a tmnt kid
Seeing this box took me back 30 years to when I got my Grayskull, and as much as this video makes me want to collect one, I'm not quite ready to spend the $300 plus right now.
"The overall girth and size of it is amazing. I know there were a lot of questions in the beginning on how big this thing was going to be. It's going one those things you just aren't going understand how massive it is until you have it in person. It's going to be one of those things where you aren't going to know where to put it when you get it." That's exactly how I wish girls talked about my penis.
What an amazing piece! I am not a MOTUC collector but this is such a beautiful piece! Great review Dan (this kinda wants me to start a MOTUC collection :D )
I would like them to design a Castle Greyskull that could be ever expanded with a modular lock system. Allowing for more room scenes to be added in. Such has hallways, or going inside the dungeon, a medical bay perhaps....etc
Great idea, although something like that did happen already. Both Point Dread and the Eternia plaset were intended to link up to Castle Grayskull. The 2002 version also had an expansion set that added a back wall to the castle.
If money and space were not an issue, I would have collected this entire line. Shipping the figs to Canada became too much for me to handle. This is arguably the greatest figure line of all time.
That thing is NUTS! By the way, Dan, is this the longest toy review you have done for a single item? I'm glad I had 42 minutes to sit through the whole thing!
I remember when I was a child I used to love going to garage sales with my mom and find Master Of The Universe gems. Cheap too! I remember buying the action figures for a quarter each!
Do you think we will ever get a Grayskull "Throne Room" Sorceress variant made especially for the castle and to sit in the throne? I know I would pick it up.
Thanks for the review...I had a vintage Castle Grayskull and loved it. T4H did a GREAT job with the modern classics one. Anyone know if they're working on a Snake Mountain or Fright Zone?
This really brings me back. Got the full original castle grayskull from my uncles who'd grown out of it. It's been used as an evil hideout for my villians many a time. Should still be in the attic somewhere.
Wow has it really been 8 yrs since this Classic Grayskull came out ! I was stoked when I was able to get one sent to Australia and for a ripper deal too much less than the secondhand market. Found a toy store in Thailand that would ship it to me cheap. You look sooo young Dan (parenthood has matured you over the years) 😂
I never had the castle Grey Skull and I wanted most of what they had with He Man & She Ra, this was so big back in the 80s I miss those times and now all those are worth a lot of money I am sure. We had best cartoons when I was a kid even the best toys and I think every 80s kid had fun with that whole collection. I miss those days when music, movies, and TV were fun to watch.
Boy, I just got warped back to 1986 when I used to play with my original Grayskull set. Great to see the new one! I really like the Classics series. It's targeted towards such a specific demographic. Kids today will never understand just how great we had it when it came to growing up in the 80s. Someone invent a Time Machine!
I must say that cover painting reminded me of when I got the original model all those years ago. The gargoyle on window is also from the original playset, where I seem to remember it's function was to be an anchor which held the elevator. It's mentioned very quickly in the review, tho to me it was huge back then - the computers and the suit were in the original playset, as flat paperboard models. The banners on the side of the throne was unhandy sticker(s) back then, I don't remember if there were 1 or 2. PDan, this was great fun to view. Good stuff.
Not sure which is more epic, the playset or the review. The jury will be out on that one for a long time. lol Awesome all around and congratz to the Four Horsemen for this. They outdid truly themselves. Thanks for sharing PD! :D
It would be great to see the Space Suit armor to get a action figure form. If there is going to be one. Who's going to be in a suit? With a helmet be removable is wondering what kind of head sculpt would it be.
A piece of concept art was made for it as a brand new character called "Jet Pak". He even appeared in minicomic. His head would have resembled Flash Gordon actor Buster Crabbe.
A classic blast from the past, it never fails. My favorite part in the Grayskull set was the elevator, the first set that holds manual mechanics in...... Well it's cool.
I was going to mention that myself. By the by, the window that it was placed over was never a full open window in the original. Great to see that it actually is open this time around.
Yer I racking my brain trying to think back to my oridganal one. I'm shaw elivator had a pull string cord. Cool. As I set my salf a goal. I am building castle gray skull outta Lego .but whant it to be same as the oridganal ..it whant be completed till then .
Feel bad reading all these comments, about how all the action figures were thrown away by the parents. Thank God, my dad still keeps mine safe and sound. 🙂
I had gotten my Castle Grayskull for Christmas and I love it. However, there is a problem I cannot get He-Man or any basic figure to sit on the throne. Is there anyone who can tell me a certain way you position them? Any input welcome
By the Power of Grayskull! Superb review once again, Dan! It is a very impressive update of a playset that gave me so many great hours of fun when I was younger! The memories. :)
The floor piece with the hole for the stand should've extended out further to the other piece. Should have way more floor space, especially for the Wind Raider, combat trainer and the weapons rack.
My Castle Greyskull never had a secret passage and it came with a weapons rack and had a third floor, but no skull at the top of the elevator. No space armor, no orb holder, and the chair was said in the instructions to be for Stratos. These differences are really strange. Maybe I'm misunderstanding something because it seems like you're saying these things were part of the original castle from the eighties, However, I loved this series and had so many of the toys.
great review of Grayskull!..I cant wait to get mine. It does worry me how much the plastic gives under your pressure..like when your popping in the flight stand or putting pressure on the different level platforms. makes me think that one day this might end up as fragile as say the Blackstar Ice Castle....ok maybe not that bad ;p, but some parts look rather thin.
Got mine on pre-order back at the beginning of March but have been somewhat frustrated on the delay in shipping. First Mattycollector had the hold on the funds in my account on November 19th to verify them then released them. When I contacted them they said they would be shipping the castle to me and collecting the funds by this week December 5th. No luck yet. I even purchased a few extra Classics figures during the Black Friday sale in anticipation of receiving my castle. The agony.
I would display it with my vintage motu figures. As kid I always thought the playsets were too small for the figures, so it seems to me this massive castle sits perfect for the vintage line. I bet this way vintage He-man and battle cat can finally fit through the jaw bridge 😁😁😁!!
hey pixel dan thinking about getting the castle greyskull but matty collector say that when closed it is 11.5" but other people say it is 15.5" just wondered cause my shelf space is limited
Definitely awesome! One of the quickest 40 mins of my life. Can't wait. Although, I was surprised that you couldn't open it a full 180. Did I hear that wrong? Great review. Another thing I'm thankful for today! Thanks Pixel Dan!
Great review Dan. Really detailed and this one felt really honest. All shortcomings were shown but it really is cool and i am looking forward to mine. Thanks guy.
Wow, this is a much different look for you compared to 2024 😂😅. I’ve only been following you the last couple years…10 years, that’s crazy! I use my original vintage Grayskull for my Origins…my only Motu collection. But if I was able to be following classics at that period, I might use this for them? Or maybe not…I have an awesome custom 3rd wall setup I created for my overall huge Eternia display similar (but better 😜) to what He-Bro created for his Origins castle. But I bet Origins would look amazing in this with the slightly bigger scale 🎉
My mom sold my collection at a yard sale when I was a teenager. I had the original Grayskull, Fright Zone, Snake Mountain, and over 80 figures. It makes me cry every time I think about it. No doubt in my mind, I would still be playing with it today as a 32 year old man.
Something similar happened to be man! Tragic!
+Bryan Speer so did my mom :-(
Me too. My dad went on a cleaning rampage in the late 80's.
that will be creepy bruh no offense
"I feel your pain"(Bill Clinton). That happened to me too! :(
What made the vintage toys so cool was the packaging artwork. You would get lost for hours and days just looking at the artwork. So much going on. A lot of details. A lot of use of different colors. A lot of times I would hold the package more than the actual toy.

Ooooh ja, brutal review & playset!
1am for me in 2018!
2:43 in 2020. still good
Yes. I too found this at 2am-ish. 6 years later this review is still awesome.
2021
This is one of the best reviews you've ever done, Dan. I've actually watched the whole video through like seven times.
yeah im rewatching PD too
My god, the quality is incredible! Mattel has done it this time! Seriously, the original does not even compare! This is amazing!
I remember my father made me one in cardboard alike and he drew the skull and detailed the teeth of greyskull, and it had two sides as well as a front and with snake windows. He is. Even at age 66 he enjoys techno music:-)

You should ask your Dad to help you build a new one.
Speaking as a Graphic Designer,I must say the box art on this is incredible!Love it and I hope to one day create a image just as epic.

FANTASTIc review! The caslte is AMAZING! I can't wait to have mine. This is the centerpiece of the line. Way to go Mattel!
I remember getting the original way back in the day. was my favorite toy ever.
Beautiful piece and a worthy video for this massive playset!
Still remember when my dad came home with the original. Love the review, thanks PD.

I realllly hope the adult is the same kid as on the original box. that'd be fantastic!
Awesome I been watching your reviews for a long time and this by far is the best review of 2013 of the most awesome MOTU piece I've seen!!!!

Wow! Great review and even greater Castle Greyskull.
If I had this playset and the figures shown in the vid, I would never leave the house. Thank Sorceress I don't have enough money to buy it!!
