encouraging self-acceptance and sharing African views.
Zodidi Gaseb is the owner of African Naturals, an initiative dedicated to the cultural
preservation of the African aesthetic as well as debunking stereotypes on natural hair,
encouraging self-acceptance and sharing African views.
She is also a mother, a social activist, an entrepreneur and an events management
officer at the Namibia Business Innovation Institute. She believes that by bringing
people together in dialogue, there is an opportunity to change negative perceptions on
how we look within Africa and the Diaspora.
She sets out social experiments to entice
debates and a different view of natural hair. Her initiative also sets out to share African
stories, product information, showcase local upcoming women entrepreneurs as well as
provide a platform for young talent.
Her goal is to not only illuminate new and different perspectives on the continent but to also emphasise the necessity of a habit of cultural preservation among us that goes beyond what we see on TV.

Afro hair is beautiful, is cool and as a lot of personality and is unique. If someone made you believe otherwise they were trying to control you. It's known that one way of controling someone is by lowing their self esteem
Truth! I used relaxers in my hair for 20 years (from age 8-28), before I realized how deeply problematic my view of hair was. Since then, I have not put a single chemical in my hair! I’m sure some people make fun of me, but for the most part, I think society is changing for the better when it comes to ethnic hair.

I’m a natural woman, nothing fake on me but nail polish that I wear on my nails and toes and I draw to add to my eyebrows. I love my hair and wish I had converted sooner, will never relax again. If I get tired of my hair, I will just cut it down to make it more manageable. She is right certain people give off vibes according to how I wear my hair, if it is full and round, beautiful I get a strange tense vibe, when I flatten it and pull it back into a bun I feel the vibe of a more relaxed person. I don’t care though what they feel as I am at my best either way.

The difference between natural and weaves varies. I have the opposite experience. I get more compliments now that I have stopped relaxing and putting in weaves.

I think it also depends on where you live. I live in London, which is extremely multicultural. But if you go just a few miles North of London, there is a lot more curiosity (sometimes, perhaps, ignorance and fear) about people who are not Caucasian. Having natural hair in certain places is almost taken as an invitation for attention, both positive and negative.

i went natural because my girls were wanting to have straight hair like mine when i had a perm/relaxer; i explained to them that it was not my natural hair and that i had missed my natural hair because with the perm it was not as soft; now that i'm natural, they embrace their natural hair too and no longer want to relax their hair; also, i love they way my hair feels now but i am battling a balding spot right at the temple that began when i relaxed my hair with a relaxer that i usually didn't use (because i couldn't find my regular brand), once that tingling started my hair began to fall out, that was the last time i relaxed my hair; and by the way, those stereotypes are hilarious

Fouler years ago I made my hair multicoloured to cheer myself up, now my husband wants it my natural colour but it is, I still need cheering up so days so now I focus on interesting pretty nails. The coloured hair dispelled my self pity over the results of the stroke. Imagination is good
Oh, I had a student in the business school where I taught who could not be missed because he had dreads that started at the nape of his neck, were rerouted over the top of his head, and fell over his face, like bangs. I've never seen anything like it! His name is Harry (and, no, that's not a pun... it really is his name) and contrary to making him the object of jest, everyone saw him as cool and unique. Although I really did think that it looked bizarre, it was his choice and it was part of his sweet personality. I always wondered what his eyes looked like.
One day, I was in line at the cafeteria. I did a double-take an the short-haired young man behind me. I actually did know what his eyes looked like! My heart just broke! It was Harry, withouth his dreads! So, I asked him why he had cut off his dreads... I swear, it hurt and I saw some welling up in his eyes. He explained that it would better his prospects of finding a job. He had had his dreads for many years and they were part of him, his personality, and his story.
No matter how silly I initially thought his dreads looked, I genuinely felt sad to see them go. I felt sad that he now looked like "everyone else."
Poor Harry 😐 hopefully one day he ll b fully dread-ed out once again 💗 society n our judgements . We all have waking up to do ✌
My experience as a hairstylist in Film working on every kind of textured hair. 1. Because of the time it takes to take care of Afro hair it’s not washed every 2-3 days but sometime 2 or more weeks. 2.Its fragile and breakes easily at the front and nape area. 3 it takes hours after washing to condition the scalp and the hair depending on the style and from asking it’s the only time they stimulate the scalp, rather than 2 times a day and the best instrument to do this is a soft and pliable Curry Brush from the pet store. Organic coconut oil is best for scalp and hair it’s anti bacterial and much more, to remove build up on scalp between washing Seabreeze on pad for cleansing scalp then application of coconut oil.avoid tight cornrows, extension to prevent breakage and balding spots. Pay attention to scalp hygiene for healthy scalp and hair growth with lots of scalp stimulation, wearing wigs do not help your hair grow it breaks it along the hairline and nape, get a hair trim every 2-3 months as you will naturally shed hair because of the natural cycle of hair growth. I teach classes on how to care for your hair, scalp and proper use and care of wigs. I am a trained hand tied lace wig maker, wig maintenance and stylist in Toronto 🇨🇦

Simply explained, clearly understood
Have done research on attractiveness and hair length and it found that overwhelmingly men and women rate the same woman with long hair is more attractive in the same woman with shorter hair. I've also looked at colorism in the African American community and found that an African American woman with lighter skin and straighten hair is braided by participants is more attractive than the same woman with processed hair or a darker-skinned African-American lady. I want to see the research disturbs me and it was something I did with a student who experienced first-hand prejudice and discrimination because she was darker skin and had natural hair when she was a student at Howard University. I'm considering doing more work in this area to see how far this phenomenon goes but the sad thing is that I found this data occurred among all types of participants including African-American participants. Should I continue conducting This research I'd love to have opinions and feedback from folks here?

Continue shedding light where u are guided to. Especially for us to see how we judge ourselves. Its not just opinioms that are held by other races but within the race itself one must begin to see the beauty of what we are, different but beautiful. The change in society starts with the change in us all ✌🌷

hi Nyeuvo, great idea but we're hosting it on a weekend and children are more than welcome. We will however do talks at schools as of next year on self esteem, accepting oneself and owning your individuality.

Not sure about the last bit. If you see someone with a funky hairstyle they may not want to be grabbed for a coffe to talk about their hair. Maybe they are busy people who just want to go about their business like everyone else. Compliment the pretty hair but no grabbing anything is better.
so she meant instead of judging them based on the hair, grab a coffee sit with them and get to know them better...see past the hair
@@grapevine4816 yes of course it's good to see past the hair but some hair-owners might be introverts or else not interested in discussing their appearance with strangers. Or just plain tired busy and overworked.

Thanks for making a disclosure of what majority of African women goes through, actually I find it difficult to understand why our African ladies wear rubbish on their heads which barries their actual beauty, I tried to ask some of them why they could do such insane act, some say it's fashion, some say it's men who wants them to look beautiful, but when I ask men it's totally opposite, African Men do hate wiggs and other forms of artificial hair, actually majority of African Men if you ask them about it they will just say they have nothing to say about women artificial hair because they do not want to look embarrassing their women because they know African women are totally in love with those rubbish on their heads

There has to be something I don't get about their hair....I always thought it was juft a personal choice, to have it straightened, in weaves, short, long, curly etc. I get that the structure might be different than my thin, very thin, extremely thin , little, very very little fuzz but I never thought it was so complicated . I always experienced bullying because I can't hsve long hair, it's so thin and if it's longer than 4 cm it'starting to fall out.....so I know the problem, but not the social context.
