Has a lot to do with childhood trauma and emotional neglect. He’s been neglected by both of his parents and his older brother. He even lives in the dorm. All he wants is to be worthy enough (like his older brother) to get his parents validation and attention. So he does everything he thinks his parents like. For examples, being a good student, imperial scholar, etc. which kind of explains why he acts the way he does.
