    Thanks for the video. It’s very informative and yes, matt’s off-road recovery is a great source for tips and techniques as well as gear for off-road recoveries. I agree with you very much.
    Personally, I try to stay away from the steel D-rings or shackles one for safety. You don’t want one of those coming fly through the air at you and two for space and storage on the bike or even in my truck I stick strictly with the soft shackles. Plus I find them easier to connect. I know it’s been a couple years since you put the video out but have you seen the snatch recovery rings? They go right on your soft shackle, there a lot lighter and smaller for storage than the traditional snatch blocks..
    Thanks again for the videos They are very informative. plus I love finding out new things to do in my soon to be new home province of New Brunswick. You’ve given me plenty of ideas of places to go things to see on my many trips down there Quading and snowmobiling.

    Respect for the tree savers and snatch block. A lot of people don’t care about the bark they tear. I find myself spending more time looking for trees in distress lately . I use to be the guy who would travel as far as I could to see all the views and I am still that guy but now I like spending time on the trails I’ve been looking out for what I love to ride in. Lately wood veins have been driving me crazy I have drove around so many and haven’t noticed them before and now I do. I make a mission to eliminate as many as I can now because i feel so bad I didn’t see them before. Water drainage is a big one too

    I have the same stuff you have except that I have two soft shackles and a kinetic rope. I am also a fan of MORR and have learned a bunch about recovery from them. Honestly, I have used the winch way more times than the rope as I am usually recovering myself or winching a deer up a steep hill.

    During rides on snow I try to always carry a shovel. I carry an old entrenching tool. Folds up small and almost indestructable. I learned my lesson a couple years ago when I chose the wrong side of the trail to get off on to turn around. High centered in 2+ feet of snow and not enough rope to extend my winch cable to the nearest tree. Only hands and feet to clear snow. Two hours later and soaked in sweat I was out. 15 or 20 minutes would have got it done with a shovel!

    • @Maritimer
      @Maritimer  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hay Gary ! thats a really good thing to have, I also carry a little folding shovel, I think I put that in my "Trail Tools" video, or maybe the survival gear video. it's a must have for winter riding.

    Back in the 90's when the atv trails started to develop, many times the trail passed right in the middle of farmer's prairies where the trees were like a few hundred feet away. So I took the habit of strapping on the front rack a pair of ridgide car traction aides and a small shovel. That saved me many times. It even helped when used as a bridge to cross ditches. You are right about the winch being # 1 but over the years I'v been riding more on my homestead and I prefer the winch be installed on the back receiver hitch. When I get stuck I prefer to get out and find another path rather than go further or I can always cross in reverse. Anyway, thanks for showing us your gear , I really like your videos and I'l open a cold one for you, Take care man !!

    • @Maritimer
      @Maritimer  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey man ! yes a shovel is a very good item to have, I normally carry one in the winter. Ohhh yeah thats a good idea, my father has his winch mounted on a hitch receiver so he is able to put it on the front or rear of his Pioneer, it's a good idea, as long as your receiver isn't under the water/mud haha

  • @ElevationATV

    Good video.. I know you carry a rope.. you should look into getting a couple hundred feet of mule line. 3/4"flat is good for 2500 LBS. That amount of mule line will take up less room then the rope. Will get to the furthest tree with ease. You can order 500' spools or if you know an electrical contractor you may be able to score some from them. 👍👍for mentioning Matt’s off the road recovery. Almost as good as your channel.

    OK, brother, stick with the steel cable... I put synthentic cable on my winches and they turn into ice balls in the winter months after they get wet. I've been left in the cold a couple times... In the winter months, I put steel back on, now.

    Nice vids man. Please don't use a Soft Shackle the way you show in the video, the Ball end goes through the Noose part of the other end so it can tighten up, then you hook stuff up to the shackle anywhere else along it.

    Hi I really love your channel and I think you inspire all of us to get out and have adventures and explore nature, I ride quads and sxs very often and I tend to push my adventures to the limits of my machines which means getting stuck is inevitable so the best thing you can carry is extra synthetic winch rope as a means of extending your winch reach they are lightweight and don't take much space, being able to reach a pull anchor is essential for solo recovery. I don't use kinetic ropes because if used incorrectly you can turn quads over which can lead to injury plus they aren't designed for solo recovery and are not good options for extending your winch because they stretch and hold energy that may jerk your machine unexpectedly. Keep doing what you do and have fun.

    • @Maritimer
      @Maritimer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Mike ! Thanks so much man ! thats amazing, I love to hear stuff like that, I do want everyone to get out and enjoy nature the same way I do.
      Thats a good point ! and I agree the kenetic rope would not be used as a winch line expansion, just for pulling out other machines. but in all honestly I think a winch is best for that. I may get myself a extension rope for my winch though, im sure it would fold up smaller than the rope I have now. thanks for the tips ! Cheers !

      Hey Shane, congrats on the new machine, yeah man a winch is a must have and people say the rope is better than a cable, and once my cable gets beat up i'll change to the rope too. Yeah Harbour Freight is basically Princess Auto up here (I think anyway haha)

    Great vid. Can’t imagine going without a winch, extra rope, and a couple of snatch block. Even if you aren’t stuck, they come in handy for dragging a moose up a steep bank to the trail. Havevdonevthat before herevin Western NL. I have the rope on my Outy winch, great. Also have wondered about the recovery ropes Matt uses. His are prob overkill in size for a quad though.

    MY ROPE!!!! I've been looking for that thing for 20 years now! Where did you find it? Did you steal that out of my garage? HAHAHA!!! Wayyyyyyy back in my younger days (in my early 20's) when we used our 1/4 ton Toyota's as SxS's, I had a rope exactly like that. We used it to pull guys out of mud holes and it worked great because of it's elasticity. It would stretch like a rubber band and then recoil, lunging the stuck vehicle out of pretty much any situation. WOW, you sure brought back some crazy good memories for me with that rope - LOL. Oh, and then you explain my rope at 8:43 - HAHAHAHA!!! I guess I could just delete my big rope story, but I'll leave it there for your entertainment and to back up your statement at the 8:43 mark - lol

    Did you get a kinetic rope yet? It's similar in principle to a sno-bungee, which is an absolute necessity on ski-doo. If you're going to be trying to pluck someone else out of a stuck, kinetic rope is soooo much better than static rope.

      Hey man ! yes I'm familiar with the kinetic rope, I'd love to get one someday, but for now the winch has gotten myself or anyone I was with out, with no issues.

    Hello from Arkansas! Thanks for taking us along on your adventures. I appreciate you going through the things you carry on the trail. You never know what you will have to deal with. Great job! I was wondering what you use to hold your cellphone on your quad? Be careful and thanks again for sharing everything with us.

      @@Maritimer I just want to thank you very much for all your helpful gear related videos. Especially the ones on what to have in case of emergencies. Because of you I was prepared for every situation that happened to me over the weekend while on the Hatfield McCoy trails in Matewan WV. We were traveling between Matewan and Williamson about 13 miles as a crow flies but about 30+ miles of connecting trails be tween the towns. The day started off great as I met up with a friend I have known for years the Friday night before the ride. He introduced me to his friends that had invited him. I was the new guy and unplanned guest. I hit it off right away with his friends and we ended our conversation that evening excited to ride the trails the next day. So we had a fun and pretty uneventful ride until about half way were my front left tire fell off. I have spacers that on the bite to make her more stable because of the 2” lift. I’m a big guy and the center of gravity is higher and makes her unstable without the 2” spacers all around. So having all the tools needed we separated the spacer from the rim and found that the lug nuts had backed off and as the wheel came off I broke a stud. We winched the Brute over to a tree on the opposite side of the trail and then used a tree saver strap and the winch to jack up the front end and put it all back together minus one stud. Crisis averted and back on the trail we went with us stopping every so often for water breaks. While stopped I would check the front end to make sure it was still good. Our plan was to get into Williamson and find a ATV dealer or automotive parts store and find a new stud to fix the situation. So we were almost to town when the scariest thing in my life while riding happened. We were going down a steep rocky grade and I was not going fast and being very cautious because of the sheer drops off of the trail. I had to apply some rear brake to maintain a low speed and the back wheels locked up and shifted the rear of the machine to the right forcing my front end to the left pointing me off the trail and facing a 60 foot drop. I turned into the skid trying to stay on the trail. Unfortunately at that point I was on top of a large flat rock about the size of the Brute. With the minimal bit of movement and the weight of myself and the bike I could not stop. The brute stayed going left over the edge even with the steering pushed to the right! I and the machine ended up over the 60 foot drop off of the trail. Mind you this was not a sheer drop off but you have been on a switch back coming down a mountain before so you know kind of what that looks like. I came off the machine in a tick and roll position. The machine the hit me on my right back side driving my left arm and side into the ground as it rolled over and past me down the drop of. We both missed hit a tree by inches. It came to rest up against a tree on its its side about 160 feet away from the trail and I was about half that distance were I stopped. I got my helmet off and even in shock started checking myself for any major injuries. I checked for broken bones first. My left arm where t felt the brunt of the impact check that was sore but mobile and my hand worked as well. Then I felt my legs. I didn’t feel anything was broken so I got my feet under me stood up using the tree I almost hit as support an stood up for a second with no problem and sat right back down. During this self diagnosis the mother and son in the SxS behind had stopped after seeing everything happen. De the mother was literally down the incline within seconds by my side making sure I was alive. I now call her flash. Her son went down the trail to grab the rest of the crew as they were in front of me and did not realized what had happened. So they came back and everyone was scrambling to get to me. I had to yell at them to slow down and think safely about the next steps as I didn’t want them getting hurt trying to get to me yet a I was alive and kicking. I had them secure the trail as we were not in a place where approaching riders could see anything on the blind turn getting to our point on the trail. Once that was done they made their way safely to me to check on my condition. After everyone was satisfied I was safe we started figuring out how to recover the Brute. They got her off the tree and put her upright on all fours. She started right up with no smoking or any indication of motor issues. I had to give them instructions on were all my recovery gear was and what to use. Mind you I was still sitting in the same spot and had not moved. They actually road the Brute to a position close to the trail and then used my tree saber strap and the winch to drag her out short pulls from tree to next tree until she was back on the trail. I then stood up and slowly made my way back up the hill and with little assistance got back on the trail myself with one good hand hold and pull up from my longtime friend Kirk. We gave each other a big hug and then moved to the next plan of action. We had someone else drive my brute down into town while I road in the SxS as my left side arm and hand were to sore to navigate the trails. Once in town I needed mentally some time to myself and the brute. I decided to drive her back on the main roads mostly back roads back to Matewan. I had to fight everyone on this but I knew I was okay to do that at least. I’m a hard head but no what my limits are. The story does not end here. 🤪 I got about halfway back forgetting about the trouble earlier with the spacer and rim. Well guess what the roll down the hill had done it’s damage to said lugs again. I pulled over and found a tree to use to lift the front end with the winch. Grabbed my tools and went to work removing the wheel and spacer again all with a bad arm and hand with no strength in either. I removed the spacer all together and put the wheel back on with only 3 lug nut’s because of the one broken stud. I made it back to camp and loaded the machine up after tending to my wounds. A lot of road/ trail rash. I drove 8 hours home and got there safely after being up for 25 hours. I got some video of the ride but not the accident or any footage after. Imagine the views I could have gotten. Lol
      If it weren’t for you and your videos I wouldn’t have been prepared for any and all the situations I faced this past weekend. I thought about this a lot on my ride home and just wanted to let you know how important your videos are not just to me but all your subscribers. You were very much with me through this entire trip because of the love and interest we share for the outdoors and our rides. I thank you for helping without knowing it to get back to my wife and son safely. This could have been a lot worse and I feel very lucky. Give your wife and daughter and Wendell a big hug and let them know you played a part in my well being and safety and that your content on TH-cam made a difference in someone’s life. As always give Wendell the biggest squeeze and lots of belly rubs from his biggest fan. I know you have a lot of subscribers and I’m just one of many but I’ll follow your content and everything you post. Thanks again for taking the time to share your life and thoughts it means more than you may know. Feel free to use this in a video I would be honored to be a part of someone’s ability to see the importance of being prepared for all situations.
      Your biggest fan!

    Good video! I picked up a kinetic rope for my Grizzly...use it to tow my buddy's Polaris! Just joking! Will likely get a snatch block next. Hey, was wondering if you can tell me the trail number by the Timberland Motel? You had mentioned Timberland in one of your previous videos but I can't find it. I want to get down there this summer. Thanks!!

      Hey terry ! thank you ! Ohhhh thats awesome, what size and how much was the rope you got? Yeah Timberland is right next to Animal Land and trail 3401 is right there, you can see it at the far end of the parking lot at Animal Land. there will be a trail head right there with signs. if you look on google maps + Satellite view, you can zoom in and see a big Windmill blade on a trailer parked right there.
