One thing I loved about that period in time is that people dressed up to do EVERYTHING. The men are wearing suits and hats and the women, dresses and shawls. There's something very cool about that.
But what’s with at the beginning of the ride everyone is pretty much silent what was with peoples enthusiasm on rides back then??, nowadays it’s like everyone screams and shouts yeahhh!!! Or just scream in general for just about the entire ride I notice that lol
I was thinking the same thing. To spend money on photographing something like this was expensive. Only the wealthy could afford to burn cash on a FILM such as this, but I'm glad they did.
And the film back then was highly flammable nitrate film that could easily torch a crowded movie theater. Unfortunately many theater fires were started due to the flammable film stock of that era.
So you must know when Playland closed? I went there as a kid in the 60's and went back in the 80's sometime and it was closed, but can't remember the specific year. I believe it has since reopened.
Its great this park is still open when so many smaller parks have closed the last 40 years. Those folks that rode that roller coaster had hard times after 1929 as the Great Depression started.
i went on the airplane coaster once, and next summer it was gone, then later the fun house, magic carpet ride, never to be rebuilt, those were fun times, esp over the top!
aww this just touched a special place in my heart lol I've been going to playland since I was 4 and I always wanted to see playland back when. This was cool
I went to rye play land today as a senior trip and that was the first ride we did(dragon coster) and when we went down it felt like gravity was pushing you hard down but lucky me i made it. 😃😊😅
It's a shame that the 1st downhill is cut-out, and you can't get a good view of the dragon's mouth... if there even was one in 1929! Amazing footage. Where did you get this? Hard to believe there's audio too for `29!
It's not about the speed of the roller coaster. It's the acceleration that makes a ride intense. The Dragon Coaster is tame because its drops aren't very steep, and its turns are wide and high off the ground. The Airplane Coaster was about the same size, but it featured rapid changes of direction and hellish spirals.
YAYA Playland, best place ever, I love how right next to the ride they have one of the original carts sitting there. It was so cool sitting in it to get to see what the original actually looked like.
I wish they ran the original trains. The Morgan trains they run today are quite light and thus you go through the course slower and the ride is less intense. I can understand from a maintainance perspective why they'd change it out but I'll just say if they can afford to keep the original trains running on the Coney Island Cyclone that seems to generally be a walk on these days, Playland could do the same on Dragon Coaster.
The “Airplane” is the best coaster rip!I wish Playland would remake it on its original spot.I have seen this park have many different coasters that were removed or dint operate for long.I wish they would expand towards the land, going to the marsh in between the paddle boat lake and the sound.God,I used to go 3 times a week all year around with my friends. We would take our dates there practically my whole town would be there. All my friends worked there during the summer. In the winter we ice skate at the arena. The rangers practiced there aswell.I remember drinking my 40 oz of ole E there on the board walk and would get a reading from the original Zoltar from big It was on the board walk headed toward the beach...What incredible days in west Chester ny and my second hometown of 10573!
It probably didn't take much. Judging by this video, those coasters back then were moving at the speeds equivalent of a grandpa taking a Sunday drive these days.
Very cool. That was great footage. I love the stuff. I never went on the Dragon Coasterbecause i was always too scared but now, riding it through the camera, i think i can handle it.
I went on this when I was a kid, at 14 years of age and they forgot to strap me down and it's a lot faster now then it was back then. I had to hold on for dear life as I was thrown out of my seat 3 times, I had one leg off the side of it, and I almost died.
Was it 1989? It's possible. Wikipedia says the early 80s, but I remember riding the old ones which were red and black in 1986-1987. The front portion of the coaster was upright. The aerodynamic turquoise ones were replaced soon after.
Maybe back then this rollercoaster was fun, but today it's outdated and is not as fun anymore because of advancements in technology to make better and more extreme rollercoasters.
One thing I loved about that period in time is that people dressed up to do EVERYTHING. The men are wearing suits and hats and the women, dresses and shawls. There's something very cool about that.
Yeah, they had more morals and class years ago, whereas today many don't and will stab you in the back first chance they get.
but just think of all the sweat absorbed into those suits in the summer
Anthony Sambuco Ewww, gross. True, though. I imagine they spent a lot, LOT more time doing laundry than we do. At least I hope they were. :-)
I agree 150 percent
But what’s with at the beginning of the ride everyone is pretty much silent what was with peoples enthusiasm on rides back then??, nowadays it’s like everyone screams and shouts yeahhh!!! Or just scream in general for just about the entire ride I notice that lol
Filming on a roller coaster with 35mm film in 1929 was a major undertaking. Add audio and wow. The batteries alone were huge.
How are you sure it was 35mm and not 8mm (or 16mm) with audio gear?
I was thinking the same thing. To spend money on photographing something like this was expensive. Only the wealthy could afford to burn cash on a FILM such as this, but I'm glad they did.

The cameras were 16mm and they were wind-up cameras so no batteries
I'm so glad I saw this originally from Rye I had a good friend who worked in the Rye Playland Paint Shop Lawrence McGowan
Amazing that they had sound also
Sound came out in 1929. So that camera was top of the line back then
I grew up in Rye and have ridden the Dragon Coaster every summer since I hit the height line back in 1969. This footage is absolutely wonderful.
So you must know when Playland closed? I went there as a kid in the 60's and went back in the 80's sometime and it was closed, but can't remember the specific year. I believe it has since reopened.

How did they keep their hats on? Great shots..
I just thought about that lol great question
Amazing,my grandmother was 7 years old in 1929
My Mom was 8 years old back then.
aww this just touched a special place in my heart lol I've been going to playland since I was 4 and I always wanted to see playland back when. This was cool
All those fabulous hats ! ! ! ! ! !
GREAT quick views of the AIRPLANE off to the right! Wooohooo!! Loved those trains!
I went to rye play land today as a senior trip and that was the first ride we did(dragon coster) and when we went down it felt like gravity was pushing you hard down but lucky me i made it. 😃😊😅

Yes, sadly the trains seen here in the video were replaced in 1989.
So crazy how it's the same and still running grate I've rode this once but can't tell you about it because I was scared and had my eyes closed haha
LOVE RYE PLAYLAND DURING THE 1970'S! MISS THOSE OLD WIND-UP NICKELODEONS BY THE BOARDWALK.
It's a shame that the 1st downhill is cut-out, and you can't get a good view of the dragon's mouth... if there even was one in 1929! Amazing footage. Where did you get this? Hard to believe there's audio too for `29!
I grew up across the parking lot from Playland in the 60-80s

Roosevelt ave that sound takes me back!
I was on Rosemere St. Howdy neighbor!
Mariah Careys grandma was riding the Dragon Coaster in this video

WOW no hats blew off !!!
its so weird cause i live in port chester which is about 10minutes away and ive rode this roller coaster at least 100 times in my life. i love it.
btw,if you lost your hat, there was a 98% chance you got it back at lost+found,a different era 50-60's,honest people.
omg I went on that ride yesterday!!!!It rocks
great old film. brings back happy memories as a kid going to rye playland.
THE DRAGON COASTER IS SO OLD..... MOSES SAT IN THE FRONT ROW

At 1:26 the gravity pushed me down and I felt like my body was stretching
Hiii welcome back 6 years later
Those trains were the same ones used on Coney Island's "TORNADO" (The Bobs) coaster ........
Amazing video!
Playland is Wonderful. Remember the Caterpillar ride in Kidde-land and the pony rides. Those were the days!
very cool video very historical

Resident of New Rochelle, ive ridden this ride countless times so much fun, even though it's not the best wooden coaster in the world, it's cool.
It probably didn't take much. Judging by this video, those coasters back then were moving at the speeds equivalent of a grandpa taking a Sunday drive these days.
Wow I love this.
Also, the best seat is the back on this coaster lol
Very cool. That was great footage. I love the stuff.
I never went on the Dragon Coasterbecause i was always too scared but now, riding it through the camera, i think i can handle it.

1929 was the last year for peace and prosperity until 1946.
World's oldest pov?
Omg i went on that ride saturday it was sooo awesome but i was scared because some people got stuck up there a few minutes b4
That Hat fascinated me why didn't he take it off, it must have been stuck on, interesting footage.
Went on that ride
In 2029 it will turn 100 Years Old!
Did they change the trains on this rise? I rode this last summer, and the train looked very different.
PotatoPerson13 yeah they replaced them they have the old carts outside as decoration holy crap I'm late
1929 OMG those people are probably really old by now 😲
I went on this when I was a kid, at 14 years of age and they forgot to strap me down and it's a lot faster now then it was back then. I had to hold on for dear life as I was thrown out of my seat 3 times, I had one leg off the side of it, and I almost died.

What was so notorious about the Aeroplane Coaster?
Matt Man it had big drops and it was super fast. Too bad they teared it down.
I reckon they changed the roller coaster ucs it was so old back then
look they have hats on now they dont let you wear hats :D
it was a Sunday drive compared to the airplane coaster.
yea i like this video but they people seem to have not much emotion compared to people today.
Too bad GoPros didn’t exist in the 1920s... 🤷♀️
damn they just jumped out, no setbelt

Maybe back then this rollercoaster was fun, but today it's outdated and is not as fun anymore because of advancements in technology to make better and more extreme rollercoasters.
