      This old retired Canadian had been in the transportation business for a long time. It's the importer, through their customs broker that pays for all taxes, duties, and tariffs in order to obtain the necessary Customs clearance for entry into the US. So, Trump's new External Revenue service will collect those funds from internally located American importers who then pass on the extra cost to their customers. How does collecting taxes internally equate to an external revenue collection? Oh wait, Trump needs these tariffs that Americans will pay in order to fund the expected huge tax cuts for the elite.

    The guest mentioned that Section 301 tariffs do not require an investigation period. That's not how that process works. Section 301 tariffs require the Office of the United States Trade Representative (appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate) to initiate an investigation or a petition from an interested party claiming a foreign country's practices are unfair or discriminatory and harm U.S. Commerce. When Trump implemented the Section 301 tariffs against China last time, it took 11-12 months for both attempts. What he can do is declare a National Emergency and implement the Emergency Economic Powers Act, which can be fairly quick(2-4 weeks). The only downside would be the political pushback on unilaterally doing so.

    Trump can think that some manufacturing can return to USA. So US workers will be happy with $ 200 a month as salary? A robot doesn't even need to be paid $ 200 a month. It doesn't get sick or need holidays and can labour perhaps 23 hours a day.

      Right now we have high prices that people struggle to afford. With a global depression, we'd end up with lower prices that people would still struggle to afford because along a collapse in consumer demands, depression also would result in job losses, high unemployment, and drop in wages. Either way people would still struggle to afford things.

    Tariffs have MANY uses.
    First the U.S. has to want something from another nation.
    Lets say we want Canada to secure its border, or else we will impose tariffs.
    Canada exports 76% of ALL their goods to the U.S.
    This means the U.S. can impose tariffs on 76% of all Canada's exports.
    ouch.
    Now Canada can impose tariffs on U.S. goods.
    The U.S. exports 15% of all our goods to Canada so Canada can ONLY put a tariff on 15% of our exports.
    Who will this hurt THE MOST?
    At this point Canada gets wise and secures their border.
    Any questions?

    • @kiwibob8967
      @kiwibob8967 12 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @Russellviews
      Question 1: Do you understand that it is not just the Canadian border, it is the USA/Canadian border?.
      That means BOTH countries have a responsibility to secure it. For example the US has a responsibility to stop the illegal flow of drugs and guns into Canada.
      Question 2: Do you understand how tariffs work and who bears the cost?
      The US imports many products essential to the US economy at cheap rates from Canada. For example oil, electricity and lumber. Each of these are essential to industry and private citizens. The tariffs, which the purchaser, not the exporter will pay, will increase costs for everyone in the supply chain, and ulimately the end users bear the increased cost of the product.
      Question 3: What does the US export to Canada that they can't source elsewhere?
      Like every other country in the world, Canada doesn't have to trade with the US. They do so because of a relationship that has been built up over many years. If the relationship breaks down there is nothing to stop them forming new relationships. Perhaps renewing the trade it once had with the UK now it is no longer part of the EU. Or perhaps increase trade with some of the 56 countries in the British Commonwealth (of which it is a member.) China is also an option. It has the potential to be much a larger and more lucrative market place than the US.

    I agree that Canadian subsidies need to stop. There was a time when we used to make the equipment our troops used. But ever since the 1960s practically every aircraft our air force has flown has been built in an American plant. All that money we’ve poured into the pockets of American workers. All that money we’ve poured into those communities. All that money we’ve poured in to boost the bottom line of American corporations. I guess when DT says Canada needs to spend more on defence, he really means we need to pour more money into American pockets. These subsidies have to stop. Maybe we should subsidize Sweden’s factories and buy their Gripen aircraft or pour money into Ukraine and buy their ever so good tank busting drones. Maybe we should get back to making our stuff and stop all those subsidies just like DT says we should.

      @@martycarpenter3829 Taxes from tariffs will be offset by cutting our wasted spending, and tax relief in other areas. But you’re correct, we should use them as a last resort to failed negotiations. And nothing trump said about Canada’s reliance on the US military support, or the trade deficit, was untrue. Trump has only suggested putting tariffs on Canada if they don’t help secure the border. It’s not an unreasonable expectation to make, and easily avoided from Canada’s end.

      Cutting spending doesn't cut the deficit in the way you think it does.
      Every $1 the government spends has an economic multiplier, if for example the defence cuts have an economic multiplier of 0.8 you need to cut 10 trillion to save 2
      You then have the problem of what do you do with all the unemployment you've created and the rapid shrinking of GDP will result in loosing the 2 trillion in reduced tax receipts.

      @@SeanPan-it3jm For sure it’s going to be a battle with the military industrial complex. Personally I believe AI drones will end global conflict completely. They’ve already taken the war in Ukraine back to 1900’s trench warfare. In a few years they’ll be so advanced, they’ll make standing armies obsolete. The developed countries will need to ban AI drone warfare before everyone is able to make them in their garage. And since no one will trust the other to not make AI drones, everyone will need to ban standing armies as well. AI will end global conflict.
