I built it alone and it took me about an hour. The color is great and for the price the lift part works well. As others have mentioned, it’s not the smoothest opening/closing, but it works. The screws do show, but I plan to order white sticker covers if that bothers us too much. Really happy with this table! UPDATE: it’s been over a year since we got this coffee table and we still love it! It gets HEAVY use as our dining table, foot rest, and school desk. Over time, the opening and closing mechanism has gotten smoother. I added a new photo with the white screw cover stickers. They blend in perfectly and make it look a little cleaner. 100% recommend!!!

What you're describing is upper definition for wabi sabi. Kintsugi is a specific part of wabi sabi, where one sees a repair with a gold alloy as additional value, since someone took their time and effort into making something a whole again
Dude I dig your fondant tool hack! and I’ve got a suggestion (food for thought) for your corner caulkings future. My uncle was a carpenter and found that he combined the fondant tool with dipping it into mineral spirits to create a smoother (no drag) caulk line, but he always wanted a ball that could be free-rolling like a bearing. he found one of those essential oil roller ball containers, and exclusively used it filled with mineral spirit (so the roller was always perfectly clean and never dragged any caulk, just pressed it to the side and moved along, and of course every bit of caulk that was pressed out of the groove wasn’t connected to the inside corner caulk and pulls off perfectly). He’d bragged to everyone in his area that it was the new big thing, but those old fellas don’t know a thing about passing on a clever idea. Thanks for your beautiful projects, you’re a great inspiration
Also, if you put the caulk down in a thick consistent bead first, then spray with foaming glass cleaner, the caulk will not adhere to the surface except where you already have the bead. This means that any excess won't stick and slides right off. I usually mask mine regardless to get a perfect edge. Great idea with the ball roller, and mineral spirits.
It is super gorgeous! Just make sure that your seal that gold leaf. It will tarnish and or rub off. IF you want the concrete to stay matte and the gold shiny then just brush sealer onto the leaf.

I always taught my students that design is not always about planning every detail. Not sure who first said it but I always reinforced that 'Design is a conscious decision making process'. Your project reflected this outlook. You followed a process you had in your head, worked with it, consciously made changes and adapted - that is design. Congrats on a great outcome. (I wonder if adding some depressions/grooves in the wet mix might have helped generate the cracks where you wanted thm.) BB
Love it! Can't help but point out the philosophy behind kintsugi: kintsukuroi. Essentially, embellishing that something has been broken to commemorate the piece while recognizing it is all the beautiful for having been broken.
Gold leaf is so gratifying to work with. I just recently did a woodworking project with it at the Marc Adams school of woodworking. Love the way this table turned out Mike! Way to problem solve. You ended up with a beautiful piece of art!

you should. i paint orthodox cristian icons and use a lot of golden leaves (i use real gold for icons, and cheaper versions for sketches), you should always put a protective layer on the cured gold, because its very easy to scratch of.
I’m fairly certain that kintsugi is more than just the act of repairing things with gold. It’s moreso about the repaired thing being more beautiful than the original thing itself. That tracks for this project. I’d love to try it out with clear resin projects.

It might not be as much of a live edge look, but you could use a grinder to cut some relief joints and then hit the concrete and it should break along that. If that makes sense

Gold leaf is supposed to be applied to the adhesive with a horse tail brush and you should have taken credit for this genius idea, because it is a genius idea.

Good call on the concrete dye going into the water - not the mix. My first concrete form pour I mixed the concrete and then dumped a few blubs of dye. The result was actually pretty cool - gave sort of a marble effect. If you want uniform color - add dye to water. If you want a marbling effect - add dye to wet concrete and mix only moderately.
I like this way better than what it would have looked like if everything went as planned. I’m impressed that you were able to switch gears and still make something great!

no mistakes, man, just "design changes"! ha ha! great work. personally, i would have used longer legs and just painted the plywood bottom to make it less noticeable, but either way, the table top makes it legit.
I like how little bits of the gold leaf got into little holes in the concrete around the cracks. All just super tiny and giving it a bit of extra shine.
I was looking for more information about kintsugi and I was really liking the look of this table. I would have made my own legs out of old metal though. If the concrete were strong enough to do without the wood on the bottom, I would try setting something like a t-nut into it. Thank you for sharing.
Mike, before the concrete cures you can use a knife/trowel or similar to make a 1-2cm indent into the top (ie. eventual bottom) along the intended crack line, then once it cures this will crack easily. That's how they do it for large concrete slabs to control crack locations

Hey, You need to sealed gold with protective varnish otherwise gold will oxidise after time :)
The right thing to do, I think so, is a coat of epoxy resin and then sand and polish. At least over the cracks if not the whole table.
Gold doesn't oxidise easily, at least not without the help of a strong acid. Only if it's an alloy will it tarnish in air.
Gonçalo Alegria it’s not real gold. I have experience with the stuff, it oxidizes fast and then is just dark sludge.
Thought the same. Plus the whole idea behind kintsugi is to make the cracks ‘seamless’
fancifuldevices then just use real gold...the 99.9% foil isn’t that expensive.

Cool project, but you may want to put a sealant of some kind on the metal leaf since you didn't use 24k gold. The stuff you used can oxidize.

Nice but....... you could of atleast painted the plywood under the concrete black to match with the legs . But other than that 10/10

@3:22 wee tip- use a sander against the edge of the form to vibrate the concrete- gets the bubbles out
