I’m torn between liking Umaru and hating her. I like her because she’s so adorable and funny but I hate her because of the way she treats her poor brother sometimes. Edit: because people keep asking, yes I do have a sibling. I have 4 siblings in fact. And I’m the oldest of them all.
You may not know it but sometimes a mischievous little sibling can brighten your day ya know. Personally, they don’t always have to respect you. Because if that’s the case there’s no heartfelt conflicts, it’s what makes having a sibling fun, you fight each other, take care of each other, disagree with each other, and all those things. So if anything, I highly disagree with you.

I know many people think that she’s just terrible but she does actually care deeply about her brother and from what I can tell I think she’s very lonely. Whenever he gets home late she panick and if she messes up she actually do try to repair it. Years later she actually slowly lets go of this habit and was able to find (someone) that accepted her for her more messy side. I’m not justifying her actions but she does improve throughout both the manga and anime. Everyone needs the time and place to be messy and it’s better that it’s at home than at school where they are supposed to create bonds with others. Everyone lets go of their family a little when they create their own relationships and life.

There was also that one part where kirie was looking for the right expression of "kumaru" for her storybook. It took all day and kirie still couldn't get the right smile, when taihei came home from work, kirie finally found the right smile and realized it's her big brother who kumaru loves most.

I swear in the anime, whenever she appears as the regular girl she's in her 'public' persona, and when she's in her chibi form that basically shows she's relaxed and switched to her 'private' persona where she's lazy and mischevious. In actuality she's still the same person and still appears the same to everyone else, but to us its just part of the art style so all the silly stuff she does in private is exaggerated and cartoony on purpose.
