Back then, people would write songs and go "ooo... I bet such and such would sound better singing this", which is what happened to a few of Lionel's songs. He knew Kenny's rasp would enhance it just right (freaking genius, he's on American Idle I think, right now). Lionel has tons of songs, hit after hit for decades.

He was the lead singer for the Commodores until 1982 and had many many hits with them too. Side note- My 7th grade chorus class sang “Truly” when it came out...with a few word changes so we didn’t say “lover” 🤣

Lionel Richie did do this song himself also but I really think Kenny sang it best and Kenny also took it to Number 1 on the charts
