Boston’s North End is the best place to go out to eat. So many incredible and affordable Italian restaurants. Next , you have to go to Mike’s Pastry. Best canollis ever.
I am American, born and raised and still live in Detroit, MI USA, but I LOVE Boston, MA. It's the best city certainly on the East Coast. Thanks for sharing!
I grew up in the Detroit area, but moved to Boston 30 years ago, and I still feel like I’m on vacation. Love this city. But will never forget Detroit. Go Lions!
for what? San Francisco and San Diego KILL boston on weather, climate and outdoor activities. san francisco DESTROYS boston on activities. NYC kills boston on nightlife
i used to live around the corner from Bova's on Salem Street. i used to wait for the smell of the bread baking in the morning and pick up a fresh loaf at 5 A.M., everyday. Miss home.
I'm so jealous right now. We used to skip school and go to the north end for the food. We'd go to fanuell hall and shop. Science museum, and the new england aquarium. Ahhh to be young again 😊😊
Would love to see you go to a real New England Clam Bake on the beach where they cook on hot rocks with seaweed, and cover the trays of food over with wet canvas. They don’t just cook clams, they do lobster too, and potatoes. I bet you guys would love helping them get the fire and food started, then you can kick back on the beach for a few hours while you wait for the feast!
I'm born & raised in Boston, and was today years old when I learned there's a 24 hour italian bakery in the North End...life changing people...a total game changer!!!
There used to be a place on Hanover Street called Lulu's that was fabulous! Not as big as Mike's or modern so not as much variety, but they had a chocolate hazelnut mousse inside of a Chocolate shell that was to die for. And then I also liked the one that's named after a woman on the Main Street either mass or commonwealth, which is it? Maybe it was just maria's, but I always liked it because they had a cat inside

Bova is awesome. I used to live right around the corner from it and I never needed to get snacks when I went for groceries cause every night between midnight and like 2 i would just walk over to get my late-night snack.
Boston Massachusetts Born & Raised...I miss the food so much !! 😢 I now lived in Food Hell West Virginia 😂 I have found some good restaurants but the Chinese forgot how to cook here .
Bovas is great. Mikes and moderns are the main tourist bakeries. (Still amazing though.) But bovas is more of a secret. Glad you found it. Your wife was right about the most boring one🤣🤣 Chocolate covered shells or florentine shells are a must have.
As an Italian-American myself from Columbus, Ohio.. im glad you got to experience some good Italian food 😊❤ I absolutely love cannoli 😋 and my favorite regular Italian food is Sausage & Peppers 😋 🇮🇹 🇺🇸 ❤ here in Ohio (both in Columbus and in Cleveland) we have our own Italian neighborhoods "Little Italy"- Cleveland.. And "Italian Village"- Columbus.. which hold Italian festivals annually every October. These festivals include shops, booths, several Italian restaurants and food stands. As well as Italian-American music ❤
Yes, it's easy to go there on a Saturday afternoon or Sunday and see all of the grannies and their black dresses and their hair in a bun pulling their shopping carts belong after they visit the market and going from store to store to get what they need for Sunday dinner. Or to walk up Prince Street and see a couple of monks in their Garb with a basketball under the arm😅
A great place to go on Hanover Street (the main drag) is the Daily Catch. It bills itself as Sicilian cuisine, and is hard to get into. It only has five or six tables, and no reservations. Most recently, I had squid-ink pasta with mussels in marinara. Amazing!
i'm sure what they got was great...but I agree that you should only buy canoll that are filled to order. Yes you can get them like this as the bakery i worked for in Florida only sold them that for the entire 20 years I baked there.
Well, Shaun, you won't have to worry about getting fat, unless you are obesely wealthy. I love the city I was born in, and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts that surrounds it, but the cost of living, at least as far as eating good food, reminds me of Wien [Vienna] and Paris! I hope you enjoyed your trip and your pricey meals.
Use to hit the open air market on Saturdays when I was in college there, and would always walk into the North End for bread. At the time, a loaf, fresh from the oven, was $.50!
Sean, I notice that you go to a lot of US cities when you visit here, which is cool, as large tall cities aren't that numerous in Europe, but you need to get out and see some more National Parks. I know you did that West Coast trip, with the Redwoods and all, but you need to get inland more and check out the Great Basin Parks, like the Mighty Five in Southern Utah. 😊
@Shaun - Next time you're in Chicago you have to try a Hot Beef sandwich with hot giardiniera. Dipped. You will not regret it. Pistachio cannolis are also my first go to.
Bova's is the best bakery in the North End. I used to live right around the corner from them on North Bennett Street. Mike's versus Modern is the tourist debate, but locals go to Bova's.
It’s embarrassing to wait in line so you can carry a Mike’s box as an accessory. Sit down at Cafe Vitoria for an espresso and eclaire and then go to Bovas for takeout. Mike’s and Modern SUCK hard
If you ever find yourself in Boston again, come down to Jamaica Plain (hop on the Orange line and head south) and check out The Haven. I'd love to hear your opinion on Boston's premiere Scottish restaurant. :)
Wow, haven't been there. Most people would go to Modern or mikes, there's a battle going on between the two. It's interesting to see a place that sells zeppole all year long. Here in Rhode island, they're most commonly found before Easter, around the day of a certain saint
@@JamesGrady-f5b to be honest, since I live in Rhode island, most of what you get in those bakeries, I could probably find around here. It's all we have. I did used to enjoy Marie's because she had more of what I would consider "typical" things, and they had a cat in the shop! One day when I was in there, there was a young girl from Italy who was here studying. She told me she went there every day at the end of classes because it reminded her of home. That was all the recommendation I needed. And there was a place called Lulu's cupcakes that used to have a hazelnut chocolate mousse inside of a hazelnut chocolate shell that you was the dish. It was pretty darn good when you wanted something fancy. I'm not sure if they're still there
Bova is best bakery, better cannolis, actual bread, cheaper, no line, right around the corner from the main drag, Massimino’s is the best restaurant for the $, closer to the parking, off the main drag of Hanover st.
Cannoli is my favorite! My Nana used to make them from scratch, along with calzone, ravioli, lasagna, biscotti and now I’m starting to understand why we’re all diabetic! 😂

In New York Ferrara bakery is the Italian bakery of choice. You can easily spot it once you exit Chinatown into little Italy on grand street. There are more modern bakeries in Chinatown but none compare to that old one. Carlo’s is owned by buddy Valastro and his family although the bakery is a 100 years old while Ferrara is owned by the Davy family that has had it for three generations.
Veneiro's is my favorite in Manhattan, East Village. I used to live about a block away. You do it under the sand. Wrap everything up in tinfoil. Hot coals.
