its nice to hear someone so excited about our country, I'm having a hard time with that right now. thank you for your positive videos. also, boston is pretty great
Thank you - everywhere has good and bad. Despite all the craziness I believe the majority of people are good, and that’s certainly my experience in America 💙
Before becoming a restaurant in 1826, the building was the hub of Revolutionary War activity. The fight for independence was started in Boston. Its ideology was born there. The original patriots were known as The Sons of Liberty. They were the group who were responsible for the Boston Tea Party. They actions spurred the onset of the war, leading to the first battles at Lexington and Concord. Many of the leaders of the Revolution met in that very building to strategize the events leading to the war. Men like John and Samuel Adams, John Hancock, and Paul Revere were among them. It's way more than just a restaurant.
You may be confusing the Union Oyster House with the Green Dragon Tavern. Both are really good places to eat, though, and historical in their own right.
Shaun, most Boston restaurants purchase lobster from Maine. The recipe may change here and there with different amounts of mayo or spices, but the lobster will be fresh no matter where in Boston you eat it.
@shaunvlog although many locals live by the adage "don't eat lobster in a month with R in it". Maybe that came from olden times to prevent overfishing
I don't eat lobster, but I drive to Maine a few times a year with my dad who's always on the hunt for soft shell lobster. I guess after they molt they're shells haven't hardened yet. You can rip them open without tools, and he claims the meat is more tender.
Keep in mind that the oyster house is a 5 star restaurant and they charge 6 star prices. Very good food but you pay top dollar. I am glad that you enjoyed it. I grew up in Boston until I was 17. Then I joined the US military and stayed for 20 years. Now retired in Aberdeen, Maryland.
Lobsta (lobster, in Boston, we have no r -- we kicked it out and put it in strange places) is expensive, even here in New England even if you got to Market Basket (a grocery chain store) and take it home and boil it yourself. But the going rate for a Lobsta roll is anywhere from $31 to $36 depending on where you get it from. We also have something called a Lobsta Pie, which is a baked. It's baked in butter with bread crumbs over the top.
White Horse Tavern in Newport Rhode Island established 1673 is the oldest restaurant, bar, tavern in the United States. It rented out rooms in its top floor in the colonial and early republic period and was also where government officials of RI would meet. In 1673 Charles II was King of England and Scotland was still independent because the Act of Union would not be until 1707. White Horse Tavern is 352 years old. The building Union Oyster house is in is much older than the restaurant but still younger than White Horse Tavern.
Two ways to have a lobster roll: 1) warm with butter, 2) cold with mayo. Both are great, but I usually go warm with butter (the “Connecticut” version).
Glad to see people getting out of the South and trying some amazing foods the rest of the country has to offer. I haven't been to the Union Oyster house in 50 years, but I remember it being really good.
I’m glad you enjoyed our city. The Union Oyster House is expensive but it does have the best clam chowder. You got a lobster roll off season. In the spring and summer you can find it for a better price if you look around.
Born and raised in Massachusetts, but currently live in Colorado. We have a food truck here that sells lobster rolls. We get two lobster rolls (1/4 pound each) for about 50 dollars. They are some of the best lobster rolls I've had. Helps the owner is from Boston.
I've always lived on the south coast of Massachusetts. Boston has always been part of my life. All my friends/relatives from Sweden, Canada, Europe have loved Boston when they've visited because it reminds them of a European city. It's a huge city with a small feel to it. Not sure if this is true but there is a hot lobster roll and cold lobster roll. A hot lobster roll has hot butter on it. A cold lobster roll has mayo, celery, lemon mixed with the meat of the lobster.
The oldest tavern in America is The 76 House in Tappan NY. Very important in the Revolutionary War. Its where British Maj John Andre was held prisoner until being executed as a spy after being captured in Sleepy Hollow/Tarrytown just across the Hudson. He was the British intelligence officer Benedict Arnold plotted with to hand over West Point. One of General Washingtons headquarters is a stones throw away and he frequented this tavern as well as his top officers. Its also the only place in the country that brews George Washingtons actual favorite beer lol Fascinating history and excellent food. The owner is a blast if youre fortunate enough to bump into him. He spent a solid few hours with me my first visit talking history and playing with Revolutionary War artifacts, muskets and such. Awesome place. Union Oyster House is great too, great food. Hi from NH!
Thanks for the largely positive views of my hometown. That said, you're certainly savvy enough to know that when a restaurant has a gift shop selling merch, 95% of the customers are non-regulars (tourists/businessmen). Secondly, lobster is a delicate seafood, like scallops or whitefish, so...tabasco?! I'm glad you were able to soak in the atmosphere--old and haunted for North America, probably common in the UK. Enjoy the rest of the trip, and I hope some of us can steer you away from the restaurants that sell merch!
Great to see you in Massachusetts. I hope you made it out to the western part of the state, where we have lots of beautiful hills, sugar shacks with local maple syrup and apple cider donuts, and lots of arts stuff. Also an annual Scottish festival! Looking forward to seeing the rest of your New England journey.
Yay for clam chowder and lobster rolls! I grew up in Connecticut and my husband's family is from Lynn/Marblehead. Their family has been there since the 1600's. Its a great area to visit and learn about American history. So glad you made it to New England! I live in Minneapolis now but miss that area. Visited this past summer visiting with relatives in Marblehead and ate tons of seafood. I had the best lobster roll in Marblehead and it was about $35.00. Geesh, the place you went to was overpriced but it's a fun historic place! IMHO Clam Chowder should not exceed $10.00 a bowl, but you can find it for less depending on where you eat. Fun to see you trying New England fare!
So happy to see you guys visit Boston and have such kind reactions. We love Boston ... sometimes the travel videos are very negative .. especially when they visit in January or February .... when its freezing .... Come back sometime in the summer and viist the Cape and Islands ...
Frank’s Hot Sauce, rather than Tabasco. Also Frank’s droplets in the Clam Chowder. Originally I used massive fresh ground black pepper, no pepper dust ever in anything, ever. Even cans of Campbells New England style Clam Chowder. Glad you enjoyed. There’s a great chowder in LBI, New Jersey. Wins the yearly award every year. Well, it did, Cheers to the both of you, Ta.
If you go to the state of Maine where most of the lobsters come from, and go to the lobster docks you can get lobster dirt cheap. They will even steam it for you right on the docks and give you melted butter and fresh lemon. 😊
😊Next time you are in the area...Go to Sandwich on the Cape. There is a fish market right where they unload the ships that unload from the canal. Growing up there, best fresh seafood. Though my grandfather and uncle were fisherman, they had a lot of lobsterman friends...oh boy...I remember the 4th of July get togethers right off of Town Neck. My uncle and aunt still live there during the summertime. There is so much history there...All throughout the Cape Cod Towns...There is also Plymouth Plantation, Heritage Museum, The Thorton Burgess House, (Author of Peter Rabbit), The glass museum...So much more all over the Cape. Also, rent a car, avoid Rt. 6 and Rt28 take 6A (Beautiful views and little quaint shops), side roads and service roads...On the Cape, there are several different backroads to get from place to place...just ask a nice local...Though there is a local running joke...A lot of tourists will ask..."Where is the ocean"? The usual response is pick a direction 😂 and drive that direction. Taking a ferry to Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket is a treat in Spring...it is whale mating season...and if you are lucky...you can watch them jump their majestic beings out of the water. So many can not grasp how very big they are. The book Moby Dick, was based on a true story of a ship out of Nantucket?..For some reason the name of the ship slips my mind.😊😊😊
I've eaten there (Union Oyster House) a few times when in Boston, and loved it each and every time. There's a reason it's been around so long! But the wait for a table might make you think you've been waiting since the 1800s! Great raw bar, too.
The oldest restaurant in the United States is 1673 Rhode island. We have restaurants in Pennsylvania from the 1700s where The United States started Philadelphia ❤🇺🇸🙏🏻✌🏻
I've eaten at Union Oyster House 3 times and the food is delicious, although expensive. I've had clam chowder and lobsters. One time my waiter said there was an old actress at a table a few places away. I looked over and saw her, I can't remember her name right now, but I recognized her. She hadn't been in a movie for years, but it was amazing that an old actress was there when I was!
You are brave. When I walk around Boston, especially in and around Faneuil Hall, my eyes are glued to the ground so I don't trip on a cobble stone or brick that sticking up. I guess it's just the hiker habit that I have developed after many trips and falls. DID YOU SAY $90 for a bowl, which was really just a cup, of clam chowder and a lobster roll!? That's nuts.
Cup of chowder, bowl of chowder, lobster rolls (did they split one or two?) If you go to a place and it tells you that lobster rolls are "Market price", you know they're going to overcharge you. Lobster comes from this part of the country. Then again, they went in october, almost november, so maybe the lobsterman slack off a bit in the fall and winter. I live in Rhode island, and the adage around here is that you should never eat lobster in a month that has R in the name
Wish you posted first. Always an experience to eat at the Union Oyster House....but wouldn't be the place I'd send you for a lobster roll LOL Nice to see you enjoying my lovely city!! Although I will say I've taken out of town friends there in the past, and there are far worse tourist traps. Their chowder is actually great. I would never pay them for lobster though. Might need a 2nd mortgage lolol Too funny....glad to hear my fellow locals recommended the clam chowdah. Just got to that part...I had paused to start typing! I will say the Chowder looks more potatoes & less clams than the last time I was there. Not a bad looking lobster roll. But they were expensive there before the prices went crazy, so shudder to think what you paid! You guys need to come back in the summer and explore the ocean towns. Nothing better than going to clam shacks and eating fresh seafood on a picnic bench over the ocean. OMG you just got to the prices LOLOL Please ask for suggestions first lol. Bet you have had whole belly fried clams yet. YUM. They've gone up massively in price, but cheap compared to that meal! But you had the experience. Next time explore more if you get back here. Maybe a few days down the Cape & in Plymouth?! And I'll take hot butter over mayo on my lobster rolls every time! (Butter is technically called Connecticut style, even though it's not a CT thing in my experience). Let me end this book of a post w/a tip. Always ask if it's Maine lobster. Back in the day it was, but they export a ton now. Maine lobster is far superior in taste and texture. I used to be able to pick them up at my supermarket but now they charge big $$$ but they are DEFINITELY not from Maine. Thankfully I've learned wha fish markets have fresh off the boat fish and ME lobsters!
Go to Harvard and visit the glass flower exhibit if you haven't been there yet. My son was 10 years old and couldn't believe it was glass he was looking at. Twenty one years later he still talks about the exhibit. It is a go to place to visit. Hot buttered is definitely better.
If i am not mistaken the hot buttered version is Conneticutt style with the cold mayo version being Maine style. My wife is from Maine and likes the mayo style and I love the hot buttered.
I commented before I watched the whole thing. You said that. I absolutely LOVE good Cullen Skink, with a thick slab of rough bread and butter. My wife and I have been to Scotland 4 times since we started watching your videos and are coming back in May of 2025 to hike the West Highland Way. I am 61, she is 57, we are trying to train for it, but very few hills in Mississippi. We have spent a lot of time around Oban, Skye, near Tomatin at Balvraid House north of the Caringorms, Stirling, Dunkeld, etc. LOVE Scotland. Also, Edinburgh and Glasgow. Been to Arthur's seat all four times. Scotland is Magical. I was always a fan of Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, and the early seasons of Outlander (in Scotland and France). One of my favorite places to relax is at the Jute Mill in Balrgowrie. Such a beautiful walk along the river Ericht into town. The sad thing about our last trip after COVID restrictions were lifted, is that so many places that we had stayed before were not in business, or did not offer a Scottish Breakfast, or somehow, had switched to non-traditional foods and not things like good Cullen Skink, haggis balls, neaps and tatties with good Whisky sauce. The Tower Restaurant in Edinburgh was closed, what a loss. We have stayed and camped at the Sligachan hotel on Skye several times, but the last time, the food was terrible and even though we had hiked the 11 mile round trip from Sligachan to the Fairy pools and back, there was NO CULLEN SKINK on the menu at the hotel. The best meal after a long cold hike is Cullen Skink and thick bread with a big slab of butte and a pint or two. I hope things are back to normal when we are there in May 2025. Best Wishes.
😮 omg. I just saw Waldo walking past you while you were talking about the king teaching french. Those must be some tasty lobster rolls to draw Waldo out to dine there too.😂❤
Ninety bucks!!?? Ah well, as you say, Shaun, it's a classic touristy place. Glad you enjoyed it. Reminds me of when I visited Scotland in 2002 and had haggis for the first time. I rather enjoyed it!
The Warren Tavern just across the river in Charlestown is worth a stop if you enjoyed the Union Oyster House, plenty of stories if those walls could talk also.
I saw the lobster roll headline and then where you were going. I immediately thought forget the lobster roll and have the clam chowder. I love clam chowder and the best I've ever had was there.
Hooked in because we visited Boston just over 10 years ago. This was much enhanced by the fact that we were there during the Scottish Independence Referendum and so it was interesting to think that the people back then during the American War of Independence were going through a similar dilemma (yes or no?) as we walked the Revolutionary trail and visited the likes of Bunker Hill. Not surprised it was pricey, btw - famous eatery for a start plus, when we were in the States last year, we also found eating out more expensive (especially when you add on the 20% tip!).
I have never been to the Oyster House and I live in Massachusetts! There are so many places I don't go because they are "touristy". I think I'd like to pay this place a visit. I hope you made it to the North End for some Italian food during your trip. So glad you enjoyed your stay. I FINALLY FOUND WALDO!
I'm a Bostonian by birth and suburbanite by choice. I've been there, and have told people that Louis Philippe live upstairs while hiding from vengeful French of various associations, before he became king. I have nothing bad to say about it, except that as a native, it's too pricey and touristy. My family did not eat crustacea because my mother was severely allergic to it. I've had lobster and crab without issues, but the lobster in Maine is fresher and better. Every restaurant and decent household in New England has a version of clam and/or seafood chowder. You should come to Boston's Chowder Festival, where you get to try various recipes from competing restaurants.
@shaunvlog it can be, you just have to go to the right places. That place is touristy, and as someone above said, five star restaurant, six-star prices. I live in Newport Rhode island. A cup of clam chowder down on the water at the Black Pearl will cost you .. I don't know somewhere around 10 or $15. But if you go where the locals go, you can get a lobster dinner for probably $20 or $25 over at Anthony's. You just have to know
I live just North of Boston and dream of someday visiting Scotland. I hope that this guy visits The Boston Public Library (so old world impressive) and the Italian North End for some Umberto’s pizza and Modern Bakery pastries).
I forget what day of the week that was. If you went around the corner and saw a man in cowboy hat playing guitar in a bar that would be my old friend Fred Ellsworth. He’s there every Sunday night at the Point bar. J Hooks would have been the better choice for your lobster roll.
Lobster rolls came up on my YT feed and now I'm subbed. Glad you enjoyed Boston. Whenever I go there's no place to "pahk". Any chance we could get a random GB&I fish and chips review?
The White Horse Tavern in Newport is the acknowledged oldest restaurant in the USA. It had period where it was a boarding house so I guess that is the difference.
@JeannoJones-pj3ho Yikes...I rewatched with captions. That's a rip off even for Boston, I really really hope that included her dinner and at least one Guiness.
Actually the union oyster house is a bit older than you think. It was a dressmaker shop in 1709 then became Atwood & Bacon Oyster House in 1829. The believed construction date is around 1704. Several notable names were there, Isaiah Thomas who printed the Massachusetts Spy newspaper, king Philippe the first of France lived above the oyster house teaching French to people despite being in exile although meeting with the great political leaders like Alexander Hamilton almost every day, Daniel Webster was a known frequent diner often talking politics over food, and former Haverford College president John Royston Coleman worked undercover in the oyster house to get a sense of what blue collar workers do writing the book The Blue Collar Journal later in life.
Clam chowder for the first time? You mean that spite being right on the ocean, Edinburgh doesn’t have clam chowder? In on Vancouver Island in Canada and I grew up eating it. Weird.
@@shaunvlog every clam chowder recipes is different. Some is so thick it's like pudding. That's not my preference but everyone has theirs so they find the spot that works. There's something for everyone, it's all fresh and it's all delicious.
If you do elect to come back to New England, might I suggest you take a little road trip north along the coast to a place called Wells. Along the way notice how many opportunities there are for a lobster roll. Once you realize how abundant it is, you know you can get it for a hell of a lot cheaper if you forgot the history. You also might find some places do it even better!!
Lobster used to be the cheapest food in New England. They were so plentiful, they used to wash up on shore in big piles. In fact, they were considered slave food in the 18th and early 19th century, or used as fertilizer. Even when I was kid in the 1950s and 60s, you could buy bushel baskets of them for less than a dollar a pound. Even 50 years ago, when my wife, who is from Maine, and I were first married we used to get lobsters for less than $2/lb on the docks in Portland. Then Japan and Europe discovered them, and the price soared!! In the last few years, even here in New England (Connecticut), you can rarely find them for under $10/lb. And our town has the last commercial lobstering fleet in the state!
$19 is not bad actually, a Big Mac fries and a drink is almost that now. The lobster roll looked delicious, I think if I ever feel I am not truly living if I don't see Boston, I would go to this spot first.
new england clam chowder ...the best. new england lobster rolls, also the best. two different things can totally be true at the same time. as for ghosts. some say new england is more haunted than old england. so there ya go.
Maine is actually the best place to get lobster, but if you’re just wandering around Boston stop by the Quincy market for a clam chowder and lobster roll. It will not disappoint.

Couple sane-ish states. Majority of them are a wash at the moment. 😢
Even Bostonians (and us folks who live elsewhere in MA) play tourist in the city. You can feel the history, no doubt.
109% so many fascinating places
Yes, I was just asking myself why I never go to the Union Oyster House
I should go! It's special!
I ignore Faneuil Hall and other locations for years at a time and then have a bit of fun re-discovering them.
Yes us Cape Codders make plenty of trips to Boston to check out the historical lore. 😊

The Pequod. SHS '76.
Glad you enjoyed Boston, slainte Shaun and Tekka!
Thanks so much. Slainte 🙌
6:05 I FOUND WALDO!!! I FOUND WALDO IRL!!
Was gonna say that! 😂
Waldo appeared at 4:08 as well.
Lmao
😅😅 well, it was Halloween....
me too! 😂😂
Go to Harvard and visit the glass flower exhibit if you haven't been there yet. My son was 10 years old and couldn't believe it was glass he was looking at. Twenty one years later he still talks about the exhibit. It is a go to place to visit. Hot buttered is definitely better.
Boston Sail Loft has a nice Lobster roll! And the fries are very good, too.
If i am not mistaken the hot buttered version is Conneticutt style with the cold mayo version being Maine style. My wife is from Maine and likes the mayo style and I love the hot buttered.
either way, if the lobster is not dead on fresh, its not good. gotta be super fresh.
Hot buttered is deffo my new favourite
6:05 Holy crap, I think I just saw Waldo? 🤨😄
Lol, remember that they were here and filmed this at Halloween
Me too. Is there's someone we're supposed to report a sighting to? 😂
@@IguanaMom ha ha, lol
Ah that’s awesome to hear. Yes all back to normal and May is a beautiful time to visit
I would love to visit there in the Autumn!
Well worth a visit
That’s when to come w foliage
W lite jacket
Awesome, the hot lobster rolls are the best.
Thanks Stephanie - we had a great time
I remember going there with my late husband .
Lovely to bring back the memory thank you from Edinburgh.
😮 omg. I just saw Waldo walking past you while you were talking about the king teaching french. Those must be some tasty lobster rolls to draw Waldo out to dine there too.😂❤
Started with you years ago with the Scotland/Outlander videos. Now just like you and your wife.
Aww thanks, I appreciate that. Great to have you here
Ninety bucks!!??
I'm glad you are enjoying our fine city.
Oh yeah it’s expensive for sure. Worth visiting but not friendly on the wallet
You just have to know
I love the Union Oyster House.
Boston you're my home❤❤❤
Love the revolutionary war history.
I live just North of Boston and dream of someday visiting Scotland. I hope that this guy visits The Boston Public Library (so old world impressive) and the Italian North End for some Umberto’s pizza and Modern Bakery pastries).
You can go 20 miles north east and get the same lobster roll for a 1/3 the price.
I forget what day of the week that was. If you went around the corner and saw a man in cowboy hat playing guitar in a bar that would be my old friend Fred Ellsworth. He’s there every Sunday night at the Point bar. J Hooks would have been the better choice for your lobster roll.
I’ll look out for him when I go back 🤠
i worked just a few blocks away from there, one of my favorite areas in the city.
Lobster rolls came up on my YT feed and now I'm subbed. Glad you enjoyed Boston. Whenever I go there's no place to "pahk". Any chance we could get a random GB&I fish and chips review?
Great to have you on board
I put a big glob of Kerrygold butter on my clam chowder and let it melt and kind of puddle up on top. makes it much better.
This video would feel wicked Boston-ish if you weren’t playing twangy Texas music and you put on some Celtic punk
The White Horse Tavern in Newport is the acknowledged oldest restaurant in the USA. It had period where it was a boarding house so I guess that is the difference.
Clam chowdah and lobstah roll...two of my hometown favorites! Hitting the lobster roll with tobasco is a bold move. I will give it a try!
Thanks for sharing..🙂
Just as you mentioned the famous people in history who visited the Union House I saw Waldo walking by you. Found him!
$19 is a great price for a lobster roll and cup of chowder! Glad you enjoyed it!
(...wait, he said $19, right? not $90?!)
❌. Nope. I think he said $90. Horrible. 😩😩😩
@JeannoJones-pj3ho Yikes...I rewatched with captions.
That's a rip off even for Boston, I really really hope that included her dinner and at least one Guiness.
Recommend you go to the town of Taunton MA while your here. Very historic.
I would rather eat the lobster by itself -- not part of a lobster roll. Lobster is so good it doesn't need anything else.
Ha, the only way I could eat it is in a lobster salad, with lots of mayo!
was just noticing you do the same as I do getting a little of what I'm eating on my middle finger 🤣
Had to do a double take at 4:08 when Waldo walked by 🤣
When we were in New England there were people that actually looked like pirates and that was their normal clothing. 😊
Weird.
We have something similar called Cullen Skink. The creamy sauce is thinner in ours
@@shaunvlog every clam chowder recipes is different. Some is so thick it's like pudding. That's not my preference but everyone has theirs so they find the spot that works. There's something for everyone, it's all fresh and it's all delicious.
@@shaunvlogI thought Cullen skink was made with haddock
The Consulate for Thailand is above the restaurant. You can often go upstairs and see the artifacts they have.
Great video thank you. I’ve never had a lobster roll and want to try so much.
Shaun!!! Dude!!! The BEST Clam chowdahhh is at the " Sail Loft" It is sooooo thick the spoon stands straight up!!!! 😂 Check it out!!! 👊😃👍
My home City!! Miss the food....don't miss the weather
Love your videos
You went all the way to Boston for Clam Chowder, when all you had to do was go to the store and buy some Campbell's Soup.... Whatever flips your lid.
Yes $1.99 and it's pretty good. 😊
Not anywhere near as good as what you get here in Massachusetts due.
@Ivehadenuff He paid $13.99 for a cup of clam chowder that cost like $1 to make.
$19 is not bad actually, a Big Mac fries and a drink is almost that now. The lobster roll looked delicious, I think if I ever feel I am not truly living if I don't see Boston, I would go to this spot first.
The lobster roll was really great. Would deffo recommend hot buttered
I think he said $90 for all the food together. 8:35
@@donaldobrien9171 i thought i heard that too, obviously they saw a foreigner coming to raise the prices
@@stpaley nah, they overcharge everyone. Same food 10 miles away would be half that price. I've lived in Boston and surrounding area all my 67 years.
The oldest restaurant is The White Horse Tavern in Newport, Rhode Island. It was opened in 1673. If you eat there, go for lunch, it's very expensive.
I
Apparently, Waldo is now a famous character who has been to the oyster house.
Try Pauli 's deli in the north end for lobstertution. Pizza Regina also in north end and Mike's party.
Great tips
new england clam chowder ...the best. new england lobster rolls, also the best. two different things can totally be true at the same time. as for ghosts. some say new england is more haunted than old england. so there ya go.
Maine is actually the best place to get lobster, but if you’re just wandering around Boston stop by the Quincy market for a clam chowder and lobster roll. It will not disappoint.
Wish more Americans loved the USA as much as you do! Live your videos!!!!
Clam chowder is my favorite!
Daniel Webster still owes money on his bar tab at the Union Oyster House!
Wow.
That place has always been pricey.
But, the same thing was like $50 in 2002.
Thats quite a jump.
