    Brilliant ! Any technically competent person can design an EDM costing $100,000. but making a simple one from common stuff for $20 is pure brilliance,

      Ask youself, is it any stable or accurate?
      Repeatability and accuracy of the results always come at a hefty price tag in the machining world.

      inverse2k1 I need an edm to do just one trick, eat out broken off bolts. It is a conservative estimate that there ar a hundred thousand in dead outboard motors in my county, due to broken off, corroded in bolts. If if can eat the heart out of them, it is dandy for me.

    I need one. This is an excellent solution to broken taps.

    Great idea. I'm planning to build a more complicated one but this idea of the selenoid feed makes it so simple and fast to put one together. I also would like to try an edm lathe.

    This works. Just tried myself. Tried on carbide tip, with 12vdc battery charger+ups battery. Coil should be from wire as thick as possible, because the more amps on tip, the more fun it makes! Device should be pretty rigid, tip should run precisely, oil bath makes it funnier. Thanks for inspiration. Come here broken taps, i am prepared now😁

    Thanks for the video. Dude, I thought I was listening to me! Your voice is EXACTLY my voice. Freaky! I need to look into boring a 1/4" oil galley hole in our crankshaft and was thinking EDM would be an option to drilling although my machine shop says a carbide bit will handle the Rc30 with no problem..

      Use a cobalt drill bit, or 2 flute end mill.

      I have used carbide tipped masonry drills in CPM3V at over 60 Rockwell. About 1/4" is as small as I've tried. When drilling something that hard it usually cracks the carbide tip as it exits it's hole. Usually when I had to do this was when clearance was forgotten about on a die section until it was discovered after heat treatment.

    Another simple enhancement, is to pump EDM fluid/oil/water down through a hollow electrode, so as to improve clearing the crud.

    Thanks for the EDM video using a solenoid. I am getting inspired to build my own EDM using a 24V solenoid that I have.
    I strongly feel, you should have waited and included in the video, a footage of how the hole looks after the job is completed.
    In your next version, you may wish to replace the shaky and wobbly mechanism to hold the electrode with a more stable one.
    Lastly, according to text books, the positive lead of the power supply should be connected to the workpiece and not to the electrode in order to maximize erosion of the workpiece.

      Hi Bala - did you make any progress? Another thing to consider with this setup is fire safety. The dielectric oil he is using does have a flashpoint, and if the oil level drops the extreme temperature of the arc could reach the vapors and cause a fire. I read about this here: www.firetrace.com/wp-content/uploads/Protecting-Against-EDM-Fires.pdf

    use water instead of oil. the carbohydrate residue insulates, so a lot of the power of the spark is negated

    its not breaking down iron into carbon... it only breaks the molecular bond between iron atoms.
    it would have to rip away 20 electrons, 20 protons, and 24 neutrons from an iron atom to make it a carbon atom. our best efforts to make synthetic gold took tremendous amounts of power. way more than can be delivered to an average house.. the machine alone to do that was the size of a 2 story house.
    cool machine though. brilliantly inexpensive if it works. it doesn't need to be precise if your not doing production part fitting.

    Before anyone gets too excited don't you think if it actually works there would be 50 videos just like it? There's a reason you only see one and a reason you don't see the end result, which my guess is a bolt with a black spot on top no hole. Someone got overly excited and posted the video before seeing its end results. Can't knock the guy for trying though.

    You’re not breaking down metal at a molecular level with electricity. That would be fission...

    • @drs2100
      @drs2100  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is an electrochemical erosive process where molecules of the alloy's crystalline structure are cemented out in a single-replacment reaction. What you're thinking of is an atomic/subatomic "level". Fission is the seperation of an atom[s] nuclei by bombardment of neutrons.

    • @compuguy123
      @compuguy123 5 ปีที่แล้ว
