  • @BackPackHack

Since your magnet is cylindrical, you can still use it for a magnet slide test. You'll need to remove the price tag, though. Take the coin to be tested and prop the edge up on another coin. Put the magnet on it's side at the top end of the ramp created by the test coin and let it roll down across the face of the coin. If It's silver, the magnet will not roll as quickly as expected... just like using a coin slide. Sometimes, the magnet will drag enough it won't have enough inertia to climb up the edge of the rim to drop off the coin.

I wasn’t sure about some cons I bought online as I was skeptical about the great price. Well I wish I followed my instincts at the time of purchase. Thanks to you showing us the flip identifier I was able to prove I bought fakes. Unfortunately several so it was an expensive lesson learn. Stick with the well known bullion dealers I have since found several other sites selling the same garbage. The coins weighed in at .9999 ounces and looked perfect but failed the flip test and magnet test. The magnet just rolls right down it. Thanks for your amazing videos you’re helping people. Would love to buy some silver dragons but those are pretty expensive and rare maybe one day once I’ve recovered my losses…

Compare the diameter and thickness of your “new“ ASE to one you are sure of. (just set them on edge next to each other and then flat) then weigh. Also you can do the diamagnetic test with a small magnet. (Just let the small magnet slide down the coin) it should travel, eerily, slow.

Another change between 2008 and later is the diagonal line from the sun, in the lower left corner, where it goes through the "L" on the word "Liberty". The later issues, 2008 and later, that line goes closer to the rim of the coin. Just compare a 2007 and a 2008 coin and you will see what I'm trying to explain.

Hi. Few days ago I purchased Silver Eagles from 1987, 1991 and 93. I have also SE from from 2007,08, 13, 14 and 20. I made a ping test (coin on the tip of my finger, hit by wooden pencil) of these coins and: two coins from 1987 and two from 1993 have not so nice sound like the coins 2007 onwards, strange :-( Two coins from 1991 (I have only 2 from this year) have entirely diferent sound than all the coins from 2007 onwards. The sound is short and dull and not so nice bell like. Just completelly diferent than the younger coins. The weigth , thickness and diameter of coins from 1991 is ok, magnet test was also fine. The detail on the coin like "U" or dash "SILVER - ONE DOLLAR" are ok. But result of the ping test raises my concerns about authenticity of these two 1991 coins. What is your opinion?

I just got an American Silver Eagle (ASE) that I purchased on eBay this week. I weighed the item. It weighed less than a troy ounce (0.98). The detail is what caught my eye right away, there was too much detail. I put the coin on the Sigma Metalytics analyzer and it did not even register on the silver scale. The coin passed the magnet test. The "coupe de grace" the coin ping was just flat. I sent the eBayer a picture of the coin on the analyzer. The coin was packed in one of those plastic holders. This was another part of the trickery. Folks always say "buy the coin and not the package." The refund was immediate. As for the return, the eBayer has disappeared. This was advertised as a BU coin. BEWARE of the trickery, you will see ASEs on eBay advertised as Collectibles.

Like that 1992 ASE you pinged lastly in this video, it seems that those older ASE's from the early 90's have a lousy 'ping' to them. I have five 1993 ASE's, and when I ping them, it just sounds like a duller 'thud', which would freak out most silver stackers, but if you listen real closely, you can still hear that signature, tell-tale 3800 Hz tone under the thud. It doesn't resonate or ring for very long, but there is a 3800 Hz ping buried in there.

what is that card thing called that you can test the size and thickness of coins with?

  • @HifiCentret
    @HifiCentret 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Most of the tests goes for gold too! Instead of sliding the coin down a magnet you can let a magnet slide down the coin instead. Alloyed gold coins you can't make a magnet test on other than it's non magnetic. If you hang the magnet from a long string you can easily see if magnet is the slightest attracted to the coin. Do however remember that eddy currents will make the magnet move - but not attracted when stationary. For 24K coins you can actually do a slide test too. Magnet will however slide faster than on silver but still significantly slower than pure brass etc. Also tungsten is actually very slightly magnetic so a hanging magnet will test for that too. So all in all it's not that hard to verify coins as long as you're careful and pays attention so you do proper tests and know what to look for.

I am completely new to silver, coins, and stacking. Will an American Silver Eagle sound different from a silver round or other .999 1oz silver coin? I have recently purchased a few American Silver Eagles and also a few other .999 silver coins and they sound different when doing the ping test, is that normal? They weigh ok on my scale, and also pass the magnet test as well, but I am a total beginner and am trying to learn so any info is appreciated. Thanks

Yes, an eagle sounds different from a round. Best of luck to you Chris. ( sounds like you’re off to a good start )

When I flipped over my American Eagle 10 times the eagle was right side up 8 out of the ten times. Does that mean it is 80% real?

You can also test your silver by placing it on the skin of a vampire. If it burns, it's real silver. Also works on goth kids with sensitive skin.

Are you aware that the Silver Eagles Type 2, minted after 2007, have the U with no downward loop? Even the ones that have been certified by well-known companies like PCGS. However, Type 1 has a downward loop as you say. Check it out.

There is also the writhing test, or whatjoumaycallit.
If you van draw lines with it on a piece of paper, than that's also an indication of silver.

Wow you throughly covered how to check to see if your ASE'S are real. I made a video with a coin slide I got for $55. But I haven't tested any of my ASE'S on it yet.

I just tried two for 60 off feebay. They were flat in finish. They past the magnet test. They pinged. One was right on in weight. The other was too light, not by much. I held it to a real eagle it was smaller. It was almost .030 smaller in diameter. The seller said I can return them. I just looked the U is wrong. Good tip. Be careful!

I bought 2 eagles on ebay. I dont have a scale. Everything i read says they are strict to 40.6mm in diameter for a real one. Both of mine measure out to 40.56mm. Does that mean mine are fake?

In some old movies they show another test: bite the coin with your teeth :)
For the Gold, as it's soft, the tooth will leave a mark on the coin. Don't know for silver.

That's a cool coin but at $68 or so is really truly steep.. If you're just wanting 1 as collectable (or know that you'll still have eBay to use and sell on in 10+yrs) then yeah but I'd try to stick with something a little closer to spot price if you're just stacking silver
