Interesting movie. I am croatian, but my mother's father served as a volunteer in the german army. (According to my father, in the Wehrmacht, but my mother told me that her father kept pictures of him in uniform that had to be kept hidden from anyone, otherwise he would be “punished” - so maybe even SS). I don't know a lot of his war stories, other than that he praised the german weapons and did kill. I was still a young teenager, living in Germany and only visited my grandfather once a year in croatia. Back then I didn't know a lot about WW2 other than it was a war. But I remember him telling how he mowed down serbian partisans and later russian soldiers with a fully automatic weapon. When he described it, he held his hands the typical way you hold an MP40. Since this was a weapon only issued to unit leaders, he must have at least been a sergeant. In the end, he was captured near vienna. The brits would often hand croatian and slovenian POWs over to the serbs, who would kill them all. Somehow, my grandfather survived. He was a withdrawn man, but when he talked about WW2, it was like he talked about the best time in his life. He hated communists, considered yugoslavia the “greater serbian empire” and said that “Germany and Croatia are eternal brothers in arms”. He predicted that once the Soviet Union crumbles, the croats will rise again and throw the serbs out of their country. Which is what happened. This is everything I know about him since, because like I said, he was very withdrawn. He was always working, had three jobs - he was a farmer, a coal miner and he brew his own liquor called “Sliwowitz”, just to sell it - and didn't talk a lot in general. Only WW2 got him talkative. I was 15 when the yugoslavian war broke out and haven't seen him ever since. He died in 1995. But my two uncles both served in the yugoslav war, and one still suffers from PTSD. The story of croats in WW2 never gets told. There still are hostilities between serbs and croats, and a debate among historians about which side killed more POWs and civilians. The massacres there don't get a lot of attention outside of former yugoslavia. And I always found it strange that my uncle couldn't handle the atrocities of war, while my grandfather kept his photos (that I have never seen) with pride and had glooming eyes when he talked about his combat experiences. It was a totally different generation. Very tough, hard people. A modern person can't get in their heads. They were products of their time and thankfully, as people we all evolved.
What an incredible story. Thank you for sharing, it's a stark reminder that even today there are people we knew and still know who participated in that war and the effects are still experienced today.
Sickend Sour I've just read your post....great story, interesting history....would make a great project tracking your grandfather's war service.....you should look up the "Prinz Eugen" SS division, they served exclusively in Yugoslavia.......if I can help.......
Or perhaps he wasn't telling the truth and didn't actually kill anybody or participate in any atrocities, at least directly. Often those who boast the most about killing the enemy and how war was a great time for them etc. etc. were actually clerks or supply officers or suchlike in the rear echelons, and in reality saw little or no actual combat. This could also be why he survived the aftermath, if he wasn't considered important or "guilty" enough. Your uncle on the other hand has PTSD because he was there and did that.
Outstanding job on this. I agree with the comments regarding the camera movements, otherwise it was phenomenal. I hope you continue to produce more along these lines.
Immoral orders must never be carried out, yet less than 1% have the courage and conviction of faith to do what is right and just when not popular to do so. Great movie!
bugz bunny thanks for the question- Krieger (the SS soldier) shot Sorge because he saw him as a weak and innefective leader. Krieger saw him as too sympathetic and not living to the German ideal that Krieger held himself to, and so in the heat of battle he took his opportunity to kill him off.
Very good film. I know you say you’ve stopped shooting films but I really think you should reconsider. All you needed in this film was a few pointers on Military traditions and behavior. You are a natural.
Jack The Grey Wolf wow thank you Jack- I appreciate that greatly. I scored the whole film using GarageBand and recording piano... so thank you for the compliment!
The shingles I noticed immediately. They should have been slate but on a small budget I think they did an exceptional job. Although the cinematography could have been better. The producers and directors could also make films about the other side of the German side---the smaller no of German soldiers who turned against the official war-- Eastern Front, about 100 defectors to Soviet Red Army (Wikipedia), some no to Yugoslavia Partisan Army d Thaelmann Co., 88, 000 arrests (Wiki) of Germans both civilian and military, who acted against the official war, and in 1936 to 39 Spanish Civil War, 1 of at least 6 WW 2 preludes, official Germans helped Spanish and Italian fascists fight vs Spanish Republicans and German, etc. Ernst Thaelmann Batallion and many other international volunteers.
Very well done film. work on the sound but the story was very good and the cinematography was tight and kept the story tense. The acting was very believable.
Good film. Giving it a like. May you develop even stronger skills as you go ahead in your journey. Would request you to pay attention to minute details for example - when the resistance member with 4 German iron crosses on his neck tries to move stealthily, they would cling and clang and the sound would give his stealth away.
"Black Sheep" was an interesting, and often riveting insight into the slaughterhouse called war. It exposed meaningless twisted ideals of honour, where, it was deemed militarily "right" to shoot a young woman in the back. I did like the frequency of the patrols, which were militaristically, very true to form. Patrols are often sent out with little warning of operations and hardly any time to prepare. What I did find distasteful were when the Germans were actually shooting at each other. I cannot bear treachery. A soldier must always be loyal to his own side. He is obliged at all times to look after the interests of his/her own side and his/her own men. We also saw the futility of the father at home encouraging his sons to fight for the Fuhrer. All-in-all a very good film, Well done!
Yes a soldier must be loyal to his own side, but a soldier also has the moral right to either disagree with an Ideology set forth by the Government, or ask that he be discharged if it goes against his moral values. The US military has a rule that, any soldier can refuse and order if it goes against his moral values, and not be punished for it. At the Nuremberg trials, the "I was just following orders" didn't have a leg to stand on, as one of the British judges made clear that, any soldier, according to the Geneva convention, has the right to refuse to follow the order if he feels that it is against his religion and morals. One of the defense lawyers for one of the Nazi criminals stated. ' I refuse to continue defending my client any further, " He knew the laws of war, and following orders, has been dismissed as a defense.
@@deltaboy767 Ashley, in your analysis you forgot to add that it is the duty of a soldier to follow the orders of a superior Officer. You can be shot for refusing to obey such orders. Let me give you an example.... An 88 mm flak gun commander was given the order to use his gun in the anti-tank role. He refused initially. Whereupon a German Officer approached him and ordered that he depress his elevation and engage the enemy tanks and be given a medal, or else he would be shot on the spot he stood. That is war.
@@LaHayeSaint Against another enemy army yes i can totally agree. But against unarmed civilians like the Whermarct and the SS did, no they have a right to refuse or ask to be discharged from duty. Like I've mentioned before. The "I was only following orders" did not stand up as a legitimate defense in the Nuremberg trials. There was a hazing incident towards some civilians in NC near the Marine base, in peace time that was put on trial and when the Marine told the military court he was following orders, the judge dismissed it, saying again he had the right to refuse the order based on his moral principles or be discharged. And was sentanced to 25 years. In peace time. What the Germans did was genocide plain and simple, they were not defending their homeland from an outside invasion, they ware commiting and idealogical act of aggression. There is no excuse for genocide, and murdering civilians because one was simply given an order.
@@deltaboy767 Ashley, Morally, I'm with you all the way. When you know you are committing plain and simple murder, I would refuse (top tip -- make sure you are armed with at least a light machine gun). An Officer could however, ask for written and signed orders. This does not exonerate him from murder, but the superior officer might think twice about the order this time, as it bears his signature. If you take a step back in time, genocide of supposedly inferior peoples, has been going on ever since the days of colonisation. Great Britain really did have dirty hands in this matter. The easiest way to transfer new land to colonists, was to start a fight with the "natives," call in the army to carry out the genocide, then call in the missionaries to preach "no violence" and "love one another" (only after the native population has been reduced 95%), and you have your land. The new landowners can now go church and preach righteousness and how hard work (for the natives) will win you a place in heaven. Done and dusted! Land transfer completed.
At 4:20 the guy in the dot 44 camo salutes with his left hand. Why? I realize he is holding the sling with his right, but still. Every soldier knows to salute with your right hand.
This movie is like a high school play. Leave aside the fact that all the props in it from the wooden structures to the uniforms and equipment are brand new and completely unrealistic, the idea that there were SS soldiers who had qualms about killing partisans or anybody for that matter is silly. It's like the protagonist somehow missed basic training and walked into the war as a civilian. The Waffen SS was an elite corp chosen for their willingness to be ruthless. This movie smells of German revisionism - "Our boys were good kids who were forced to do what they didn''t want to do." Watch the Nazi rallies, the faces of the German youth at the start of the war - They wanted the war and the anticipated glory, as ignorant young men almost always do. Some regular German army units did object to killing civilians but the Wafffen SS was the answer to that.
Royal Mason while I agree that the protagonist was soft, and it made it lack a little authenticity, to say that all Waffen SS men had no qualms about shooting civilians would be to ignore many memoirs of soldiers who served in the Waffen SS. They were first and foremost shock combat troops. Most of their war crimes were acts of reprisal against partisans. The Allgemeine SS on the other hand... they were ruthless and purpose built for slaughter.
To portait partisans as civilians and punish killing of civilians as war crimes, when it was only done because the partisans (who were criminals and illegal combattants) continued their guerilla warfare and murdered soldiers, is the perverted way the victors of WWII punish Germany for losing the war which was forced on it.
@@daeph123 isn't it convenient how the masses like to forget that reprisals were condoned by the Geneva Convention but we changed the rules after the war was over and then held the Germans to that standard whilst the U.S. secretary of war stated months before pearl harbor that the entire US strategy in the Pacific was to get bombers close enough to firebomb Japanese civilians until they gave up.and we did just that. No war crimes there though, that's totally legit, but reprisals against partisans.. oh boy that's the vilest thing I ever did hear of.
Very well done I'm really getting tired of the american versions of WWII. This made you think. Thank you and looking forward to more. Liked n' Subscribed Cheers

Great film! But wait in the intro you say ths is in Yugoslavia, which begs the question what the h*ll are Polish resistance fighters doing in Yugoslavia!?
Being the SS, it´s a mistake that "leutnant baumann" (4:22). The rank of that auctority in the SS was "SS obersturmführer" that weared the litzen (collar tabs) of three nail heads and a single staff. And the SS NEVER greeted with military "visor-greeting"; ALWAYS did it with roman greeting. I Know that some signs are forgiven in Germany, but it should be done in acting like this. After that, in (5:00) the messenger greets to the "leutnant" calling him "sturmbannführer" that it was a rank similar to commander or major (over the SS-hauptsturmführer that was a SS-captain). So it has been the most lightning ascent of an SS-carrrer: from leutnant to commander instantly. But he is wearing a collar tab of untersturmführer (sub-leutnant)!! Paying a little of attention to the details, all productions would be very more seriously dealed. I earn my time non continuing seeing this. I´m spanish not german and it seems that I know more of your own history that the author of this. Sorry.
First comment, --this is a heart wrenching film. Congratulations! Your work is excellent at portraying the reality of someone being ordered to annihilate a fellow human being in a remote location for some distant cause, truly, a very stark depiction of combat. I have watched a number of these quasi-amateur productions, and the production values are professional and very, very, engaging in their presentation. As I said above, this is a heart-wrenching film and kudos to the actors and production staff! From a film making perspective, the first-person 'shaky-cam' style in your production was well-done but can be over used and tends to disorient the audience quickly. While used to good effect in this film --by conveying the confusion and immediacy of an intense situation. But afterwards, the viewer needs to have his perspective rapidly reoriented to the Director's thrust of the plot or a nauseous interlude occurs. In other words, don't bring the audience so close to the action for too long, but keep them just close enough to stay engaged. Here is where the trick of presentation is the key. Move from the 'tactical' to the 'strategic' viewpoint of the battle. This will allow the audience a moment to reflect on the personalities and motivations of the actors involved in the scene, and let them consider how they would react at that point in the story.
24 years military service. NCO that became a Officer Graduate of the War College. I agree but there's many underfold moments in history that are murderous. What man can do to another man is ungodly.
Inaccuracy. SS was never using military salute, only “Heil Hitler”. Wehrmacht was using military salute till 1944 when they too were ordered using only “Heil Hitler”.
Just one little point but an important one: If you are going to have your characters smoke cigarettes make sure you have actors who know how to smoke. It was very evident that for most of the actors in this film that it was the first time they had lit up. OK, it's a minor point but in a WWII movie when almost everyone smoked you might as well get it right. Every time a soldier lit up in this movie I was reminded that I was watching an actor playing a role. In other words the fantasy was broken. On the positive side this was a good production and I believe we will be seeing a lot more from the producers in the future
Who are the enemies? The whole thing is confusing me. The names to me are mixed up with others. For example, who was the one getting shot? And what happened to the Partisans at the end while the SS were shooting their own?
What is up with that one SS guy always saluting with his left arm? And some of the helmets being regular Wehrmacht instead of SS? The description says it is an SS unit fighting Yugoslavian partisans, but above says "non compliance from populace (Polish resistance fighters)". Which is it? Other than that it was pretty good...I just could not get over the left handed salute from that one guy.......................
@@pietrostavastano2356 It doesn't matter if you're left or right handed, you always salute with your right hand...unless you are incapable of using the right hand. I broke my left foot in the military and used a cane in my right hand for a month or so and had to salute with my left hand. If I was carrying something in my left and had the cane in my right, I had to greet officers with "sir" or "ma'am" and they would return a salute.
My Grandpa Wally was in the War, so was my Dad. My Grandpa had a Walther PPK he got off a German Officer he killed. He was proud of it and carried it with him the entire war and stayed into 46.
Great content; almost as if the older son paid his foolish father back by rising above the horror of WWII Germany thinking. "Honor the Fatherland" was such brainwashing but the truly educated German could see right through this.
The script was good, but at times the movie felt a little rushed. The use of depth of field and filters added to the dreariness of the landscape which created a fitting, depressing atmosphere. My only major complaint is the camera work. There was way too much emphasis on 1st person perspective and too much movement. I found myself spending more time trying to focus on the action instead of watching the movie. If you used more fixed and stationary shots instead of all the "Blair Witch" action, the movie would have been that much more powerful. Otherwise, great movie.
I appreciate your constructive comment. The movie was rushed indeed because we had only 1 month to film it during my freshman summer, and as such we had to cut scenes and make concessions. Not my best work but we had to get it done.
@@IronTitanProductions your honesty is appreciated, thank you for explaining and I wish you luck on your next works, but keep it up, you guys are great, many thanks!¬!!
Didn't the SS have stringent requirements? The older brother clearly didn't fit the SS mindset. Wouldn't the SS have dealt him to an ordinary army unit? The ambush of the supply truck wasn't believable.

My Grandfather was machinegunner in wehrmacht 369. Croatian division.
Or he perhaps he was just a psychopath? Many loved war.
Your uncle on the other hand has PTSD because he was there and did that.
...who salutes with the left hand...?
Outstanding job on this. I agree with the comments regarding the camera movements, otherwise it was phenomenal. I hope you continue to produce more along these lines.

Awesome movie would love to see more like it.Thanks for the upload.
bugz bunny thanks for the question- Krieger (the SS soldier) shot Sorge because he saw him as a weak and innefective leader. Krieger saw him as too sympathetic and not living to the German ideal that Krieger held himself to, and so in the heat of battle he took his opportunity to kill him off.

Anyone notice the shingles on the house are modern day 30 year architectural shingles? 8:13
The shingles I noticed immediately. They should have been slate but on a small budget I think they did an exceptional job. Although the cinematography could have been better. More wide shots rather than so many close-ups But all in all I think it was a pretty good film.those are not big budget cameras, but it also not a big budget film..I think they did an excellent job with what they had.

Great short film 🎞, I want more just like this. I have always loved to see the German side of the wars and I think there should be more.
The producers and directors could also make films about the other side of the German side---the smaller no of German soldiers who turned against the official war-- Eastern Front, about 100 defectors to Soviet Red Army (Wikipedia), some no to Yugoslavia Partisan Army d Thaelmann Co.,
88, 000 arrests (Wiki) of Germans both civilian and military, who acted against the official war, and in 1936 to 39 Spanish Civil War, 1
of at least 6 WW 2 preludes, official Germans helped Spanish and Italian fascists fight vs Spanish Republicans and German, etc. Ernst Thaelmann Batallion and many other international volunteers.
Very well done film. work on the sound but the story was very good and the cinematography was tight and kept the story tense. The acting was very believable.
These films are better than some of the big budget Hollywood flicks .
Better than all of them, hollywood is just a bunch of lies, Band of Brothers is a great one based of of a true story though.

@@LaHayeSaint Refusing to engage an enemy military army, Is one thing, and refusing to murder civilians is another.

Were you there? No? Then your opinion is worth a pinch of shit. The fact that you're a Communist makes it worth even less than that.

I agree but there's many underfold moments in history that are murderous.

There is a mistake in the title of the film "Schwartze Schafe". Correct is: "Schwarze Schafe"
Unfortunately, the actors are not German native speakers.
NEVER TRUST A TRANSLATOR WITH CAPS LOCK TO WRITE SUBTITLES
Can't keep up with a full on subtitle movie.....
I can detect some Generation War influences here

Other than that it was pretty good...I just could not get over the left handed salute from that one guy.......................
maybe he was left handed

The description says this is Yugoslavia, but its obviously eastern Poland Western Belarus.
