    I think the history segments are fascinating. And the subtitles pointing out points of interest along the way during disassembly help to give context to the work you're doing (while simultaneously giving you twice the workload during editing, of course!). But your style and skill with these videos continues to evolve, and you seem to be settling into a format that really works. Since most watch repair enthusiasts are a bit on the nerdy side, I can't see how covering the history of the brands, movements or even specific models would be met with anything but enthusiasm.

    • @Saving-Time
      @Saving-Time  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm glad you liked it, and it was very nice of you to let me know. The editing on these things is already insane with all the cameras. I just love the extra work. I'm going to try and go more in depth with the history. I like doing the research, which is, as you said, a bit nerdy. I may even start to script these videos, as at the moment I just shout into the mic for an hour straight, then cut it all together!

    I love the history segment! I watch a few other watch repairers and usually all that you get a small off-handed comment about a so-and-so company and how far they've fallen but no real explanations. Context and background of the situation really help as I only consume horology information from yours and others' videos. I feel the timestamps definitely help for those who aren't as interested in the history.

    I am so so glad you mention the difficulty when reinserting the barrel arbor. That has been the bane of my watch repair existence! I can't count the times I have been on all fours with a flashlight or broom looking for a #$&@ barrel arbor that pinged off! All others seem to have no problem with this. Now I'm your fan for life😅

    • @Saving-Time
      @Saving-Time  ปีที่แล้ว

      One of the comments mentioned holding onto the arbor with a pin vice when installing it, it seems like it could work i'm going to try it. Maybe give it a go if it works for you let me know!

    • @nicklapietra3890
      @nicklapietra3890 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I tried that method just a couple of days ago and it did work well. Only concern is many arbors don't have a long enough extension to get a good grip on with the pin vice. This one was an old pin lever watch where the mainspring barrel had a second gear so it drove both the minute and hour wheel directly. That arbor was longer lending itself to that method. Thanks again. I also appreciate the history.

    • @Saving-Time
      @Saving-Time  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes i did wonder about the grip being an issue on some arbors I guess it would be to much to ask for that something is easy lol appreciate you letting me know

    Hi, I am enjoying your videos, especially the history of various manufacturers which adds valuable context. You seem concerned that parts of the videos could be "boring". My guess is that people viewing watch repair videos are not doing so for excitement. Such vids are, by their nature, slow, detailed and repetitive. Don't worry about it. Viewers have the power to easily skip forward and backwards as they wish.
    I like also that you are "budget constrained" like most people, and don't have every bit of fancy kit so think of new or different ways of doing things. This is keeping it real and is encouraging.
    Keep up the fine work!

    History in general is important. We can't understand the world as it is today if we don't know how it became that way. The history of horology is a very narrow niche and therefore it is very interesting. Good job informing your audience. Keep it coming. You could screw the arbor on the tip of a threaded rod the size of a screwdriver. Insert the arbor, then unscrew the rod while holding it with a tweezer. Obviously, the thread has to be the correct size. Which may be different from one arbor to another.

    Hi,
    If you do not like to install the barrel arbor as the last step before closing the barrel, you could have done it once the mainspring was in the retainer ring and placing the unit on your barrel tool which has a whole in the center where the arbor fits and and make sure the arbor tongue fits in the mainspring hole.
    Once this is all together place the whole unit on the barrel itself, line up the arbor over the barrel hole and push the mainspring down into the barrel. Voile!
    Sometimes the barrel cover becomes rounded after several overhauls so make sure it is flat and gives the arbor just enough endshake but not too much.
    Nice video👍

    Love your left hand spring solution. What I've done in the past is wind the spring into a winder one size smaller than the barrel, then deposit the spring into the correct winder. That gets it in the correct orientation, and you can just push it into the barrel normally.

    The history makes the build special. And I use B dip to clean the pallet fork, balance and escape wheel as I have had damage in the past with the ultrasonic. We all do things differently but the ultrasonic can loosen the glue that holds the jewels in the pallet fork. I have lost one once.

    • @Saving-Time
      @Saving-Time  ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you think that's a direct result of the ultrasonic or the cleaning fluid used? Shellac melts in alcohol, as I'm sure you are aware. I'll just add that for anyone reading this comment who does not know. I use Elma's WF Pro Watch Cleaning Fluid. I've never had an issue with the shellac; I'm not saying there is not one, and I'll report on the channel if I ever have an issue in the future. A little more caution with these parts is no bad thing, and I appreciate you taking the time to let me know.

    You would really love RGM watches. A small workshop in Lancaster, PA. Tiny number of pieces made each year. Rose engine. Even use some totally original, fully in-house movements!
    Doubt I’ll ever be able to afford one (although they’ve had some for as “low” as 5k USD) but I plan to tour their workshop one day.
    Anyway, look up RGM watches! As artisanal high horology as it gets.

    Love the videos! Where you were talking about how difficult the jewels are to pick up, I've heard using a larger pair of tweezers, like a double ought, helps a lot. Even though it's rather counterintuitive. Hope that helps!

    Contrary to what I may have told you earlier, it is in fact safe for the balance wheel pivots to have the shock settings removed while cleaning.The pivots won't touch anything but the cleaning fluids. One lives and learns I guess (and hope..😊). I do like the history lessons. Thank you.

    • @Saving-Time
      @Saving-Time  ปีที่แล้ว

      I've seen it done both ways by experienced watchmakers. I'm not sure which is best, and I'm not sure it matters that much as long as the pivots get cleaned. Welcome back, and thanks for the revised tips. and I try to learn; it takes a few mistakes normally lol

    Recently found the channel and am enjoying it so far. If you can get your hands on one definitely pick up an elgin Edgewater. American, cool style and not expensive. Down side is you can't find the gaskets for it anymore. it's always a gamble on being able to get case back screws out and back off at all. Lesser quality steel and the heads get chewed up from use and skin oil.

    • @Saving-Time
      @Saving-Time  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you I'll keep an eye out for an Elgin for sure. I have a Gruen coming up soon I like the American watch companies of old i'm a bit of a fan.

    A caution on ultrasonic cleaners. Heavy use can remove treatments, such as plating. It does deem gentle. It is a bit more violent on the micro level. It uses micro cavitations to scrub the surfaces. That can be too violent for some stuff. Not often, particularly for the watches you work on. But look into that before anything too expensive.
