The cheap copy that made a company great. Vintage restoration of Seiko's most important watch!

  • Did Seiko clone a Swiss movement? I believe this watch was a turning point in Seiko's history. Join me on this journey through Seiko's history as we take a look at the repair and restoration of this 1950's Seiko unique.
    I've included the making of a very nice ostrich leg strap in this video, handmade of course. Let me know what you think about this and Seiko in general. I'm a relative newbie to Seiko, so this was an interesting one for me.

    Today, after more than 130 years of innovation, Kintaro Hattori’s company is still dedicated to the perfection that the founder always strove to achieve.

    My wife bought me an automatic Seiko Seahorse in stainless steel for my birthday in 1966. I had a friend who was a watchmaker and who served his apprenticeship in Switzerland before the war. I proudly showed him my new watch and he asked if he could open it to see the movement. He was very impressed with the quality of it and said “the Swiss should be worried about this standard of work.” I still wear this watch 57 years later and its accuracy is amazing. Many thanks for your video. I like your style of presentation.

      Thank you. The Seiko's from the 60s where great watches and your friend was right. Seiko was pretty much responsible for the fall of the Swiss watch industry in the 70s. My wife game me a pair of socks! I'll have to have a word!

    Seiko's are my choice of watches. In fact I just took off my 44 year old Seiko about an hour ago. And it still looks great and keeps very good time. It has the day/date/and alarm complications. My other Seiko's are all day/date. I just ordered, several days ago, a new Seiko 5 military style watch. I don't know why it took me so long to do that as I bought my first Seiko at a PX when I first got to Vietnam back in Jan of 1970. In fact that was a Bell-Matic/day/date.

    wow, what a wonderful job on the strap! now I have to order the tools and try it for myself, haha.
    as to Seikos, I really like the brand for the versatility and the reasonable prices, and as a hobby watchmaker I like their movements - they're _different_ from the Swiss ones, some things are absolutely brilliantly simple like their double pawl lever automatic works, and some are stupidly over-engineered like the keyless works in their 56xx series, but regardless of that they're always fun to work on. I also like that the technical communications are readily available and include the exploded views of the movement with the order of disassembly/reassembly and the oiling points (and that is of course also _different_ from the typical Swiss way of oiling).

    • @Saving-Time
      @Saving-Time  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm for sure going to be working on more Seiko's good to know the technical documentations is readily available. Good luck with the strap.

      If I might suggest something for your collection, if you are looking for something a little different, check out the Russian cal 2209 "Vympel" mroatman.wixsite.com/watches-of-the-USSR/vympel, made in 1961. It was just 2.9 mm thick and represented a huge technical achievement. It's not expensive, and it's not flashy, but at just 6.5 mm thick from case back to crystal, it's impressive even today. A talking point, and I think every collection should have at least one Russian watch.

    I totally enjoyed your video. Making the strap brought something unique to it that I haven't seen before.👍 I think Seiko is a very good brand to start off a collection. I have a Seiko 5 and a solar chrono. Been eyeing the Grand Seiko SBGE295 Spring Drive GMT since it came out. I hope it will by my only major purchase for this year, LOL

    Lovely job. I don't go in much for the leather straps but you made me want one.
    From looking at the surfaces and machining of that early Seiko I'm afraid it shows the typical industrial quality of the time period in Japan. They have come a long long way since then.

    Mrs. Saving Time - what a lovely name. Enjoyed the whole video. Thank you for mentioning my country - singapore. Look at one of the higher end regular seikos that use an 8L movement - save a fee grand off grand seiko. Too rich for my blood so i collect Seiko 5 watches-some of the dials and bezels on the limited edition ones are nice. You do pay a little more -sometimes up to twice a regular seiko 5 but it’s what I like 😊

    I saw someone use a bed of rodico to hold the regulator and cap jewel. Then they smoosh the balance cock into it and it holds it aligned till you get the screws in. Hate the non shock settings too though. Really appreciate your humble approach to this and the strap build are awesome!

    Really enjoyed the video, especially the strap making. Brings back fond memories of the two Seikomatics my father gave me.
    Also, I've been thinking about getting a new strap for my father's Glycene Airman -- something in exotic skin with a deployant clasp -- and your video has convinced me.

    • @Saving-Time

      A good strap really does make the watch, IMO. Generational watches deserve the best treatment, as they are the best type of watch. All the best - David

    I enjoy this in-depth restoration. I never knew Seiko used cloned Swiss movements in their watches. It makes perfect sense, pre Daini and Suwa days. I've also never seen a strap being made either. Very interesting. Thanks for the video.

    Nice watch, watch- and strapmaking! :) That movement looks crude, but I see it was adjusted in three positions. Now, that number 7, I made a count of 7 jewels, but there might be one more on the balance staff. I suppose they made it in more versions and that number was internal so workers knew which set of parts to use.

    • @Saving-Time
      @Saving-Time  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yup that could be it. The movement was crude but sort of understandable given the circumstances. Glad you enjoyed the video.

    I was in Fiji in 1968 in the town of Lautoka on the west of the main island of Viti Levu inside a jewellery shop, run by an Indian (50% of the population were Indian, brought in by the British to work the canefields, a story worthy of attention but off the beaten track here) and Seiko watches were all the rage, everybody had one, including me. I had actually bought one at the time for about 20 Fijian dollars when an American came in and paid F$200 for the exact same watch, no questions asked.
