    Our simple system involves the use of cover crops, a chicken tractor, and tarps to reduce the presence of weed seeds in our soil and drastically reduce our weed pressure. Join us as we show you a prime example of this in our corn plot where the weed pressure is minimal even after not cultivating for over 3 weeks!

    I'm in zone 5b, Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, and just discovered yesterday that my celery, spinach, and Swiss chard all seem to have survived the winter! The Swiss chard and celery may not grow into much, since they were more mature and looked like they got pretty beat up, but the spinach I had seeded at the end of Fall with some beets as a last-ditch effort for a harvest. So they're looking small but pretty darn healthy - I'm excited to already have a start on the garden seeing as we've had snow as recently as a couple days ago!

    I started corn indoors early in my New England season with great success. I started an early variety in tubes made from newspaper filled with starter mix/peat moss 60/40 mix (home mixed). I wrapped the 6 x 6 pieces of paper around a 1 inch dowel and put a small piece of tape on it to hold it. I packed the 6 inch deep, 1 inch diameter tubes in a 4 inch deep tray, filled the tubes with the mix in semi tight, poked a corn seed in, watered the tray and in just a few days some of the seeds started to sprouted in my basement. As soon as the tap root poked through the bottom of a few of the tubes I planted the first run of corn. It was early April here. I gave the plants time to reach knee height and I started another batch. I planted them between the first group of plants. When the first batch started to ripen I started a third batch. As the first run of plants stopped producing I pulled the stalks and planted the 3rd batch of plants. We were eating corn from late June through September. I also took a paper grocery bag and shook the pollen into the bag then used a paint brush to pollinate the silks. I'm guessing you could run 4 crops further south. Corn needs warm soil to sprout but it is generally a cold weather plant as part of the grass family. The plants grow and tolerate the cold of early spring and late fall. I used an early variety of corn that had 2-3 ears per stalk...some more.

    My backyard grocery store is producing... Green onions, and not much else. My collards already bolted, and there's still some possibility of frost in the near future. I'll probably have mustard in another couple of weeks. I'm growing celeriac rather than celery, just to see how it works out, but I suspect the heat will get it well before it matures. I'll try a fall planting later in the year.
    At least I'm not going to have to worry about weeds this year. I think the wind blew them all away today.

      We weren't talking about blanching when preserving it. Some folks will cover their celery stalks with newspaper while still in the ground -- they call that blanching too. It makes the stalks have a lighter color and not as strong a celery flavor.

I chop and drop in my compost when I'm running low on greens plus chop a few for my 2 year old food forest. You don't have to grow acres, just small amounts here and there. Grow a handful near your perennials or longer to harvest vegetables. Works great. And there are some for all seasons.

      They're not ours, but the neighbor who owns them did tell us their names at one point. She could tell them apart, but I can't. She did say the leader of the group is named Richard. He's the biggest one.

      It can be tough. We used to have alot of it. You have to just aggravate it to death via frequent, shallow cultivation and it will eventually go away.

    I am in Moultrie. We do a small amount of gardening. Our main issue is weeds, crab grass, hog weed and so much more. Can't find anything that works. Help

      The tarp and till technique works very well. Till the area, tarp it for a few weeks, pull back the tarp, water, till, put the tarp back on and keep repeating until all signs of weeds are gone.

    I have grown McCormack blue field corn. It's supposed to be bred from white Hickory King and an unnamed blue variety. My guess is that the unnamed variety is Ohio Blue Clarage. My chickens don't like anything but white corn kernels. I think they would starve before they ate a red kernel.

      I misspoke. Meant to say May. I think the maturity date on this Eden variety is around 60 days or so.

    What exactly did you do except move chickens around? Sorry it is not clear to a new viewer, something about the chicken tractor (easy) and then you mention tarp or no? You plant a cover crop first over the weeds and then bring in the chickens when it is a certain height? And is there a tarp in there somewhere? It seems this video relies on a previous video? The section titles don't really match the answers either. But I would like to know! And your content seems intriguing if I could understand with clarity your process.

      We planted a cover crop in October. Once the cover crop was about 2' tall, we put the chicken tractor on the plot and moved them every single day. We let them make three rounds on the plot. Then we mowed the plot close and put a tarp on it for about a month and a half. We pulled back the tarp and used the wheel hoe to break up some of the organic debris and then we were pretty much ready to plant.

    At 9:45 your talking about how in a drought it's too dry......WTH bruh?? You usually put down irrigation tape any how And that soil is blacker than my hair to boot! What are you worried about my brother?????

    • @LazyDogFarm
      @LazyDogFarm  ปีที่แล้ว

      Believe it or not, our sandy soil can make it tough even with drip irrigation. If we go a month or more without rain and there's no ground moisture, it can make it tough.
