    I grow indeterminates in cages made from 5' high wire mesh. I put strong posts in the ground on both ends of the row and run a wire between the posts, threading it through the top of each cage in the row. I don't have to stake them down that way. I mulch the entire row before putting the cages on.
    As far as training I remove all suckers below the first blooms. Within the cage I remove entire leaves or part of them to maintain air flow. As shoots grow out the sides of the cage, I prune them back to the first bloom cluster. As they grow out the top, I allow them to flop over the cages and grow down the sides to the ground. That's usually when we get our first frost. I lose about a fourth of the plants before frost, usually from root problems. I spray them primarily with chlorothalonil(Bravo) and copper fungicides. Otherwise, I would probably have 100% fatalities from leaf spots, anthracnose, and early and late blight.

    Had the same thing eating on my late planting of peppers (didn't touch the early's) I pruned off all the munched on leaves and spot fed some 20=20=20 to those particular peppers to make them grow out of the damage quickly, (plus greened them up a bit more) now back to the agrothrive. Seemed like the bug damage was only on the least green plants in my case. Trying my best to go all season without spraying anything, hoping it will bring in more "beneficial" pests that will eat the bad ones.

    First time that I can remember my peppers being eaten by tiny critters, I sprayed them with some pyrethrin and Neem oil with a little dish soap for mixing the oil. I will have to move several of my peppers because I put them to close to the tomatoes and they get shaded out. I'm sorry you haven't had rain, we've had rain almost every day, today was cloudy all day but no rain yet. How are your potatoes doing, I've already had to dig my Baltic Rose because they got sick and were dying. It's new soil that never had a nightshade in it. I had someone explain to me that different plants like to be fertilized at different levels in their root systems. The person that was explaining this was someone that was talking about trees and bonsai that he makes. In summary, some like to be fertilized at the bottom of the root and others like at the top of the soil. In particular, he was looking at trees with deeper tap roots and ones that are more like fine meshes. I have always added a handful of fert deep in the hole when I planted tomoatos thinking they would get it and use it. However, I am slowly finding that a handful doesn't really seem to matter and they seem to do even better if I am just feeding from the top. So I wondering if that has anything to do with your watering and fert the top of the hills.

    • @christineedwards4865
      @christineedwards4865 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, generally, the larger the plant is, the deeper it's roots go. When you fertilize a tree you put the fertilizer deeper into the ground so the shallow rooted plants around the tree don't take it and use it for themselves. Something like a tomato is typically shallow rooted, depending on how deep the gardener plants it, and fertilizing from the surface down is more effective, especially as long as there is little weed pressure. As the nutrients decompose and become soluble, they filter down into the soil when it rains or you water.

    If you are having issues with the drip tape not watering the upper part of the tomato roots, why do you bury the tape? I have always kept the tape at ground level and just mulch on top of it. Being in Eastern NC, the soil is basically sand and there is not a lot of transfer of water up from drip tape. I have also found the same to be true with raised beds. I actually changed my tape out this year to 15 mil irritech that has a psi rating of over 30 psi. With this tape, I can kind of flood the soil and let the water drip/spread down. I am getting about .7 gpm off of each emitter that is spaced at six inches at 25 psi.

    • @LazyDogFarm
      @LazyDogFarm  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's really only an issue with these indeterminates that are hilled, and only an issue when it gets really dry. We like the tape buried because it's out of the way and stays in place much better.

    • @Mstymntntop
      @Mstymntntop ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LazyDogFarm I gotcha. Have you done a side by side of hilling them vs not? It kind of sounds like the hilling is producing roots in an area that the plant is not getting what it wants. Maybe the plant is thinking that those surface roots are the main feeders?! Maybe the plant would put more energy underneath the initial planting line if there was no medium to grow more surface roots. If feeding organic, I don’t think the worms or beneficials would want to move up to an area that is drier and gets hotter (thinking about my worm bin).
      I am personally trying to foliar feed more this year. Each week, I fill my spray tank with a full strength recipe, spray, then top of my sprayer with water for the next day. It dilutes more each day, but that constant, little amount of fertilizer seems to help the plants. I don’t eat for two weeks at a time, but many times during that two week span.
      My Hoss Chandler strawberries (bought this fall) have twice the BRIX rating of the local farms’ chandler berries. They also last in the fridge for at least a week instead of a day or two.

    How do you control weeds you do not have one?

      Cover crops, tarps, shallow cultivation -- lots of ways.

      We focus on keeping the "weed seed bank" low in each plot. We do that with cover crops, tarps, and frequent, shallow cultivation.

    Are you Searching for Truth?
    Christ died for our sins, cause we are all sinners in need of Gods Grace to be FREE FROM the power of SIN and DEATH
    We ARE ALL SINNERS
    Romans 3:23-26
    For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
    Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
    Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
    To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
    Romans 3:10-12
    As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
    There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.
    They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
    The Gospel
    1 Corinthians 15:1-4
    Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
    By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
    For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
    And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
    Romans 1:16
    For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
    Faith Alone in the Death, Burial and Resurrection of Jesus Christ (God) to Forgive your Sins through His blood (By believing in this you have become a new creation in Christ, and have a promise you’ll be with the Lord in your death, but also have the Holy Spirit living in you forever as a guide for you). If you believe, from that moment on to eternity you are saved (No matter how much you struggle with sin after).
    Ephesians 1:13-14
    In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
    Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
    HELL Is Real
    Matthew 10:28
    And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
    Matthew 24:51
    And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
    HELL IS A REAL LOCATION
    ALL NON CHRISTIANS WILL BE THERE
    Heaven or Hell?
    A PRAYER FOR SALVATION THROUGH FAITH
    “I know that I am a sinner and need your forgiveness. I believe that Christ died for my sins and rose three days later from the grave. Thank you for forgiving my sin on the cross. You alone Jesus is now why I have forgiveness and eternal life. Thank you in Jesus name. Amen.”
    If you have prayed this with faith you are Forgiven and now in the Body of Christ.
    Welcome brother or sister. Remember saying a prayer does not save you, having Faith does in Jesus and what He did for you.
    I encourage you to find a Godly Bible believing church as well
    God Bless

    I always perk up my ears and wag my tail when the topic is growing tomatoes. Mine won't hit the open garden for another week, but all are very stout and healthy in their step-ups. Both Toronjina and Turkey Creek show remarkable early vigor, outperforming their counterparts, Sun Gold and Italian Heirloom. I hope that it's not the Italian that's fizzled out with disease in your trials. I'm going to source out that b. amyloliquefaciens D747 that you're testing. In your shoes, I'd probably be hitting them with some liquid copper fungicide in rotation with that bacillus. Probably touching up those peppers with a round of Azera also. Great show,
    Addendum: No product labels online for Bug Hut products. Caveat emptor.

      Super sweet 150 cherry tomato I planted last year, had 2 volunteers and those are now nearly dead but I have taken probably 3 bushels. A way down south. 300 miles south of Travis.
