When my parents moved to Norfolk we were constantly shocked by how friendly and helpful people were in comparison to the South East.
I lived in London for 20 years (first Islington and then Hackney) and loved it, moved there at 21 and brought up two kids...I was a 'goth' and having access to the Electric Ballroom, Camden Palace, Heaven and all the indie fashion shops was fabulous...however, I do believe that London is better for the young.... now I'm sixty and visiting is fine but I couldn't live there anymore..I now live in a small village where I know my neighbours and there is a far beter sense of community spirit...I wouldn't change those 20 years though, I have many happy memories of being a 'Londoner'. :)
As a visitor to London from time to time from Canada I agree with what you’ve said... I’ve experienced a lot of these exact pros and cons. As someone from a small city I was surprised that things closed so early... I was also surprised by how safe I felt. I’ve traveled to many large cities in the world and I feel most at home, and safe in London.
Like a lot of things, when things close depend of what part of London you are in. For example, Richmond everywhere closes annoyingly early. Whereas Brixton, most things seem to be open indefinitely. Or at least the laws are far more relaxed.
You mentioned snow. I just wanna point out that there's less snow in London now than there used to be back when I used to live there. I've been in contact with people from all over the world and apparently, Europe and the world as a whole has been particularly hot this winter. I was talking with a Finnish guy a few days and he said that this winter has been very hot for their standards so there's almost no snow. I've heard that in Ontario they also haven't been getting much snow. A few days, I also found out that Antarctica recently broke a record for the hottest temperature ever recorded there at around 20°C. I'm currently a high school student and I'm deeply in love with geography. For this reason I have been searching up temperatures all around the world for the past few months and while you might be complaining about not having as much snow as you did in New Jersey, New Jersey has barely been snow this winter as well. As far as I'm aware London hasn't gotten any snow/sleet this winter either. I am no scientist but my hypothesis is that the Australia wildfires have something to do with this. I just need to do a little more research. I still don't understand how people can deny climate change. Anyway, I hope you're enjoying my hometown :)
There’s an animated movie where there’s world destruction and at the end there’s a montage of all the skies across the world going back to their normal sunny and beautiful but when they do London it goes back to grey and I laughed SO HARD
£1.50 each way for the bus isn’t that expensive. I live around an hour outside london and a 15 min bus journey is atleast twice that price each way- almost £7 return. Thankfully I have. A bus card but for those that don’t (libpving where I live) they probably wish their fare was only £150 each way.
Evan Edinger ye to get around I have to sometime get a bus and a train. Train from where I live (half hour into London) cost around £16 -£20 for a return depending on the day and time.
I think London is a city of many cities. I've kind of experienced different sides. When I moved to London from the north of England I lived the typical 20 something life in London, making new friends, living in a house share etc... Since then I met my born and bred London boyfriend. Now I live in London and have a local family to hang around, all of them being true Londoners. I think that makes London feel much more homely than it did when you're hanging around other 20 somethings all the time.
southerners are completely different than us northerners 😂 someone from manchester or newcastle would happily say hi mate on a street to a randomer whereas most Southerners just give us dirty looks. its also so much cheaper up here 😂
I went to walsall as it is only a bus journey away. If anyone goes there please invest 😭 Mom said it used to be POPPIN back in the day but then there were cuts...
As someone who's lived in several places around the UK, London feels like another country! I love London, but I feel as if I should have to have my passport checked on the train in! I live in Bradford, but London makes me feel like a country bumpkin! People are always nice when I have to ask a question (like do I need to tag my debit card getting off the bus as well as on?) as long as I'm super polite. Also, why do you want food at 3am?! As long as I can get a few groceries on my way home from work I'm happy!
It might be cheaper but the crime isn’t too much better even though guns are for the most part illegal the gun crime keeps going up and the knife attacks are worse than any were else in the UK(look up London stabbings)
@RoadKillzine i don't know where you are, but outside of london, and probably other major cities most most town centres just close up shop at 5/6 pm, with the exception of the odd fast food chain and yeah, the 24 hour tescoes. Also I lived in basildon for a good portion of ny life and let me tell you the crime rate there can rival london's haha 🤣
I lived in London for 6 years and I agree with this! London made me a colder person, the weather is quite bad but not as bad as in the north of England. Great vibrancy and selection of activities to do, however long distances and too much congestion! The public transport is great, but again the distances are long.
You don't want to live in reading tho haha everytime I go there I get accosted for money and cigarettes and when I lived there when I was two there were snails that came in to the house lol
As a Londoner I agree with everything apart from the shops closing early con. There's so many 24 hour places available, but it does depend on what side of London you're in.
Tre Marley I agree with you. Been living in London for one year so far and honestly that is not accurate. On top of that, this guy is not exploring the full potential of London. If you want to do the monthly grocery shopping, just shop online. Use Tesco express or sainsbury local only for convenience and fresh products. Other than that, seems pretty accurate
I lived in London for about a year last year as part of an exchange program I did with my university in the US. It was genuinely one of the best experiences of my life, I had a bit of trouble with an employer not wanting to pay me my last paycheck which was a whole thing but besides that it was wonderful! I lived in Camden and I actually found there to be a few bigger grocery stores there as well as the usual corner shops. We had a full-sized Waitrose and Tesco's if I remember correctly! But those were the only big stores I saw in central London. But I'm so excited to get the chance to go back for my Master's next year, I'll be living in New Cross.

All the pros and cons are so true! Lived in London 3 years ago, and I relate to everything. I remember when I moved up here in Inverness, Scotland, and got so shocked to see everyone talking to you and smiling just because! And here most Tesco’s are open 24 hours! Well, not now with the lockdown, but in normal times they are.
Very good and fair review. I live in Copenhagen so I’m used to astronomical prices. My girlfriend and I went on an internship in London for 3 months and we really enjoyed it! The city has so much to offer and so many different parts. Really want to go live there again though I love Copenhagen
Something I only learned quite recently is that London is a lot bigger than New York. I'm so used to everything in USA being huge I just automatically assumed it would be bigger than London. The thing about all the airports around London is great for Londoners, not so great for people elsewhere in UK. I used to live in northern Scotland and the direct flights from Scottish airports are very limited. I would typically have to travel 600 miles to one of those London airports to go anywhere.
Hey Evan, thanks for mentioning the B word, yes London is its own bubble! As a guy from just north of Edinburgh, it annoys me when non brits come to these 4 beautiful countries, only see london and think theyve seen the UK. For example, you mentioned prices, yes everything is dearer in london - thank goodness for Wotherspoons for cheap meas and drinks, but culture too - not every city in the uk has a theatre scene as strong as london, or as many museums as london. i could go on and on but like any city ther is pros and cons and i apprciate your honesty on this, im just saying that london really is a world of its own when compared to the rest of UK and i apprciate you mentioned it
your mom no. A nation has people who have similar origins and customs. The four countries of the UK do not. A better example of nation in the UK would be the Travelers.
I visited London last year from Canada by myself for 2 weeks and I agree, I loved it. I felt pretty safe, it was fairly easy to get around. I didn't notice the air pollution at all. England definitely needs air conditioning though.
I've recently decided that I want to move to London after I graduate university. I'm not expecting it to be all smooth sailing but I'm really looking forward to it!
Would advise you to understand the new legislations and restrictions post Brexit (January 1st 2021) for non British citizens. Donno your nationality, but new restrictions will come into place for Europeans and people from the rest of the world in regards to employment and living costs; taxes, council fees etc. Employment is essential of course to live in London. You are likely to be renting a room as appose to a whole flat. Find out about the demographics that make up the different areas in London.

Save £2 on a pint, but also drink in a proper shit pub with no history or atmosphere and walk out into a shit bit of London. Or pay a bit more and sit in a lovely pub with history and warmth and atmosphere and exit into a lovely district of London. Get what you pay for.

I've only been for a couple days here and there before and the Underground was a friggin' revelation. And, I recently actually compared cost of living between Seattle and London recently and it's depressingly similar these days. But I don't even know where to start on trying to find a job and work there legally.
The ‘con’ at 10:17 IS AGRIVATING ME BEYOND BELIEF I NEED TO AIR THIS OUT: London’s grocery options are ANYTHING but limited. Firstly, you have all the big supermarket chains (just to name a few): Waitrose, M&S, Tesco, Sainsbury’s etc. Each of these usually come in two types: a small one for convenience and a bigger one, usually for the weekly shop; for example Tesco express, which has all the basics and a few luxuries (a small shop) and Tesco Extra, which basically has everything under the sun in one store (pretty massive) this goes for pretty much all the big supermarket chains (M&S to go, normal M&S, little Waitrose, normal Waitrose) THEN ON TOP OF ALL OF THESE: there are corner shops dotted everywhere, which are convenient when you just need a snack or something out of the blue (also usually pretty cheap). Having been to America, I noticed that Americans don’t understand the concept of simply having a smaller, more convenient store. But instead, having these ridiculously massive stores all over the place. In London, we have small versions of each supermarket, and big versions. In America, nothing can ever just be small.
I've lived in London for 4 months, rent/socialising are my biggest cons. Moved here without knowing many people so finding a social group is definitely something I need to work on.
Hi Evan, that was really good! London is amazing! It’s probably the best city in the world & that’s why it’s so expensive! I’m one of those friendly Manchester people who’s now a rude Londoner!
Shawnee I always find it funny when people go on about how much cheaper their area is compared to London. And yet I never hear them admitting their area has nowhere near as much to offer as London, so it’s understandable that their area is cheaper. Cos London is much better.
London makes me so much depressed in winter. Particularly as a new Mom in winter, i was devastated by the ugly weather condition! Apart from that its really cool living in London.
“Ankh-Morpork! Pearl of cities! This is not a completely accurate description, of course - it was not round and shiny - but even its worst enemies would agree that if you had to liken Ankh-Morpork to anything, then it might as well be a piece of rubbish covered with the diseased secretions of a dying mollusc.”
"Poets have tried to describe Ankh-Morpork. They have failed. Perhaps it's the sheer zestful vitality of the place, or maybe it's just that a city with a million inhabitants and no sewers is rather robust for poets, who prefer daffodils and no wonder."
So let's just say that Ankh-Morpork is as full of life as an old cheese on a hot day, as loud as a curse in a cathedral, as bright as an oil slick, as colourful as a bruise and as full of activity, industry, bustle and sheer exuberant busyness as a dead dog on a termite mound.”
Ah the days before oyster lols. I remeber them. Had to get a weekly bus ticket from my local news agents before school and my pass was just full of them. Basically did this til they brought out the oyster photo cards in 06 or 07.
Yeah as a visitor I've definitely noticed the daily Oyster/contactless cap has been going up and up, especially if travelling in more zones. Last trip when I stayed cheap over night in Zone 4 or 5 (Travelodge Heathrow) to go to Wembley I really had to keep track of every bus and tube fare cos the Zone 1-5 daily cap was so high. Though at least journeys in the outer zones were only like £1.50. Like 10 years ago I'd probably have capped after 2 or 3 journeys and no longer had to care about how much it cost, or I was on a day trip on the train and had a Travelcard included in my train ticket with the same effect.
One thing I was surprised about was the lack of elevators at most tube stations. As an American expat living in Tokyo, I am used to almost all subway and train stations having elevators from the ground to the platform. I was able to go to work when I was on crutches because of this. My Japanese friends and I had a lot of trouble carrying our massive suitcases out of the tube station when we arrived in London last year.
The weather is actually a pro compared to the rest of the UK. The South East is the warmest part of the UK and it rains a lot less in the east than the west. I'm from the west and when I moved to Yorkshire it was noticeably drier.

Duessa2000 Safe in London?? 😂

Bless ya. I hope you do become a scientist in the future and do what you love.

America has just as many if not more convenient stores than Walmarts or other big brand stores. Corner stores, bodegas, wawa, quiktrip, 7/11.
Like the only way this was your experience was if you stayed exclusively in a nicer suburb or in a podunk town and even then doubtful

That is changing. Most tube stations are now accessible for those in wheelchairs.
They’re changing that tbf
The weather is actually a pro compared to the rest of the UK. The South East is the warmest part of the UK and it rains a lot less in the east than the west. I'm from the west and when I moved to Yorkshire it was noticeably drier.
