I am a beginner to woodwork, the main test I have with this bundle th-cam.com/users/postUgkxTNB_zFBSnTo_O1PqfVUwgi7ityw0JlKt is that I think that its hard to settle on a choice of the plan and outline to use as there are a large portion of them there. Nonetheless, I like the simple stride to step directions laid out there.
Not sure if you did this, but I would coat the knives with some food-safe coating, to prevent splinters from getting into the hard cheeses you cut with it. Alternatively, you could slightly char the outside of the wood, to burn those splinters, and maybe to make a seal layer.
Everything looks great except the "knives" they look like crap.

It was very enjoyable to watch you make this and to see how excited your wife was.
One thing I'd consider for the magnets is leaving the ones on the bottom of the board as is, but for the knife holder, drilling from the sides and sliding them in, then filling the cavity so they are hidden and have that wood buffer to manage the strength too
I would have used a piece of scrap wood to veneer over the magnets, it covers them and it will help to weaken them a little. This is something that I have used before, and have a few projects that I will be using it on.
Without a doubt, the best projects are the ones we make for people we care about. They are even better than the ones we get to overcharge for!

GORGEOUS PIECE! Thoughts - Cut outs for knives closer to the edge so the cutting board does not take up so much space when you open - making it more likely to potentially push something off the counter. (From a restaurant POV) A double handled straight blade is also a good style of cheese knife - especially for the harder cheeses - and a little safer. I also agree with a food safe sealant. You did it to the board... just saying. :D

While I think it's a good skill to have I hardly agree that it's a measure of a good woodworker.
That tessalation is actually an old quilt pattern called "Jack's Chain" or "Wagon Wheel". A true tessalation is one single shape ... Like birds or fish or Greek keys.

Thank you for doing the daily breakdown of the steps. I wish more DIY channels and projects would show how much time went into things like that. Most DIY videos make it seem like everything just takes like a few hours and give no indication of how much time it takes to do the individual steps or wait for things to dry/cure, and it can be very discouraging to someone if they start working on something and then it doesn't come together right away.
Knowing that things take time and that you do it one step at a time makes things way less daunting and much more realistic.

Wow, what a lovely concept! I've been woodworking for over 5 decades (yes, you read that right!) and have recently purchased a CNC, which will open up a new chapter for me. Your use of yours is therefore very inspirational, so thanks for sharing it with us.
if you'd like to decrease the strength of the magnets just a little bit, put some very thin washers over the magnets, and use thin felt pads on the 4 corners of the tray to keep it level. those magnets are plenty strong enough to hold even when they're already holding metal.
true, but then you'll have washers falling around once in a while, you can actually discharge a magnet at a rate slow enough to control how "strong" you want it. i think it should work better.
@@ldsea4757 If it's that big of a concern, just use a bit of glue. Even Elmer's glue will keep em in place since it's mostly the magnetic force that would be keeping em stuck.

i love this, looks amazing. You have skills (and tools) far beyond what I can do! The only thing I think I would change if I could make this myself, would be to have the lower layer as a kind of drawer, rather than mess around with magnets etc, think it would make it a little more usable, particularly if less counter space.. other than that this is still gets top marks.
a lower layer that is a drawer with a magnet holding it in place! ... best of both worlds.. lol

The knives you made turned out great! However as a knife maker my a bit of friendly advice is that a circular sander can sometimes upset the bevel and make it wavy or uneven

@@philip7kelly , actually haven't had any splinters or hints of splinters yet. Perhaps after much use, it may need a bit of reconditioning, but they aren't something meant to be used every day, so no concerns yet at all.

One observation about the handles in the SketchUp model. It looks like the arch forming the handles remained a bit segmented. Before you draw a circle/curve in SketchUp, you can specify and increase the number of segments to refine the smoothness of the curve. Or curious if that was a result of a different issue? Regardless, looks awesome. Thank you for putting yourself out there!
I noticed the same about the flats in the curve. Certainly something to get sorted out in future to get maximum benefit out of using a CNC in the first place.
It will be pretty obvious in the CAD by the looks of it. I have never used SketchUp, your suggestion sounds on the money (or find a better software if curves cannot be smoothed out satisfactorily).
Its a problem that can crop up in CAM software as well, even if the CAD line looks perfectly smooth. The setting to fix it in this case will likely be called "tolerance", in the CAM software I use it is called "Intol - Outtol" . A software specific forum could advise.
Often a loose tolerance is used for roughing operations for speed of cutting and tool path calculation time.
For finish cuts I'll use 0.002mm tolerance, some routers might be slowed down in feed rate when they reach a curve with a tolerance like that especially if it is a spiraling down cut.
A bit of experimenting is required to find a number that gives the best balance of cut speed performance and finished result.
Fixing flats in CAD is priority one, since CAM will just replicate the CAD.
Oh my gosh. Great idea on the knife storage. I've been looking for an easier card deck storage for cribbage boards and that looks like a great alternative.

Of course anyone is jealous of CnC work. It’s hard to replicate and produce as much product with less hrs put into a piece. No difference than building a jig. But there’s nothing really Authentic or out of the ordinary with this piece that is mind blowing. But I was inspired and I would love to take any idea from anyone and make a piece I enjoy making. Keep up the good work! :)
No one is jealous of skill free assembly line work. That's why hand made is more expensive and why my fancy looking dinner plates were $1.50 each. This guy wants to charge hand made price for made in China crap. $1,000? I wouldn't pay $30 at TJMaxx.

Looks great, but
1- A sliding panel instead of a dropping panel would have been better, i think.
2- To work as a serving board, you would need something to prevent the food from sliding/rolling off.
3- Isn't it too big to be convenient?

“Oh My Gosh!” - This is an awesome idea. It also shows the power the proper tools have on the finished product. I'd show this video to my wife to make her understand what goes in planning a thing like this; sadly English is not her first language so she'd probably not get most of the explanation.

Only those who have worked with a CNC can truly appreciate how difficult it is to line up perfectly those secondary cuts. I've sabotaged more than a few projects on those. Great job!
Yep cnc work looks so easy until you actually do it.
Yeah, making a few measurements and adjustments and having unlimited test runs before starting is way harder than doing it by hand. If you know how to operate your c&c, then the mistakes are on you. We're praising not fu#*ing up now? Even though he did, numerous times.

Awesome project. It looks like the radiuses for the inside of the hand holds were converted to poly lines. Sometimes this happens when making complex shapes. If you want a smooth radius, you'll have to weld the poly line segments back together, so your CAM software reads your exported file as a radius.
Search the extension warehouse for "Weld"
Incredible work. We have just set up our Shark 510 and so far its a very nice piece of equipment in the shop. I've just started learning about the software and I can say its honestly a huge learning curve, so I can honestly appreciate the amount of time you put into that piece as well as the others.

Loved this video, actually watched it first time a few weeks ago it's just a really skilful thoughtful use of the tools and materials available so today I watched it again for the great use of currently available new tools like the CNC. If we stuck to only traditional tools and materials we'd still be using knapped stone knives to scrape skins for clothes. My father was a bit dubious when I got a circular saw and plunge router but after he used them a few times agreed that they made it possible to do stuff the old hand saw and chisels could only do with difficulty. Needless to say he got power tools for the next two Christmases . . .

Awsome! Wouldn't matter how good or bad you think it may be! You made it and that comes from the heart! I made a simple planter stand for my wife with a bench so she doesn't have to bend down to fill the pots on the ground! She balled big time! I really didnt think it was a big deal and I enjoyed making it. Then decided to make another for my sister and she balled! It's more personal making it then buying it.
