    I have the same problem with upholstery. One of my students built a lovely rocking chair and I had some special Brogue fabric given to me by an old Upholsterer many years before. The fabric was kept for just the right project and this chair fitted the bill. As I was working with a number of students, this young fellow was sent, with the chair base, fabric and foam across the road to another skilled Upholsterer to see if he could finish the seat cushion for us. The student had been away for some time and the Upholsterer did more than just finish the job. He took time off from his work to instruct the student as he worked on his own cushion, personally overseeing his work. He returned, proud as punch with a quality result that did this treasured piece of fabric justice.

      @@lottatroublemaker6130 Thanks for the correction, both terms ring a bell and it was a fabric. A rich gold and green with a raised pattern effect. I only have two Budgies, Timmy & Joey, one is blue, the other green. I often get them confused too. :)

      @lottatroublemaker6130 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@ubetucan2747 That sounds perfectly like brocade! Like those beautiful drapes in a silky satin with a raised, shiny pattern on it. Or even wallpaper of the same, so elegant! Comfy. Wow, that chair turned out AMAZING. Because you're redoing the cushions, I suggest going with a firmer foam. I have that foam on my daily foot rest and it has already started being permanently compressed after... Maybe a year? You could just make them removable and have replaceable cushions

    • @jasmeralia
      @jasmeralia 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I defonitely agree about planning the cushions to be replaceable. There's no way even the best foam is going to last as long as the woodworking will.

    • @christopherbedford9897
      @christopherbedford9897 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yah the upholstery trade refers to that foam as "high density" when it's actually anything but. It's scarcely dense enough to cut a bath sponge from. What you need is what they call "composite", the stuff that's thousands of little offcuts of stiffer foam all sort of melted together (I guess there must be a reason they don't make sheets of the stiffer stuff? 🤷‍♂)

    • @UTube354
      @UTube354 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I ‘fixed’ one dining chair and replaced the seat cushion. It came out ‘meh’, good enough. My buddy was getting custom cushions for his boat, sent the paper template for the dimensions and picked the foam thickness. They were beautiful and reasonably priced. I sent off a template for the other 9 chairs and they were perfect. After more than a decade a few of the cushions needed rehab. I visited the local fabric store, the owner was very impressed with the previous work, 3 different types of trimmed foam, a batting for the elements and waterproof stitching. I was directed to materials and given tips for even a nicer, indoor repair. These held up even longer, closer to 20 years. Even used daily, when the set was passed on, the newer cushions could almost pass for new.
      The fabric store is long gone replaced by condos, nothing local popped up to fill this niche. Local machine shops, hardwood dealers, chandleries, tanneries, and craftsman are fading away being replaced by lower end, disposable, online orders. Please support these local resources, pick their brains and pass on these skills and knowledge before everything is replaced by cheap, mass produced, plastic, disposable, knockoffs of once beautiful bespoke pieces. Do it for the kids.

    • @lottatroublemaker6130
      @lottatroublemaker6130 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also it is nice to give the foam a layer of wadding on top (spray glue it down). It gives the cushion a much more finished, high quality, look! 🤗

    I am the same when it comes to cushions. any bench or chair I make I take the cushion plate to an automotive upholstery shop and let them to the foam and fabric. that way I dont have to worry about sourcing fabric and if a client wants extra chairs or needs repairs a year later I can go to the same shop and know they can source the same fabric.

Something she can use to put knick knacks and dishes and blankets and other different things in that she can later on take to her first home or apartment. That chair turned out pretty sweet and goes well with the bed. Looks comfy too. I can see what you don't like about the cushions, but don't think they look all that bad, personally. As for underrated songs, I would pick one from Bruce Springsteen for the troll factor here, but instead I'll go with Mohammed's Radio by Warrren Zevon (see also his Carmelita for a similar vibe, which was actually written by Kris Kristofferson). If I could make one tiny critique, for me the base looks just too oversize for the seating part of the chair and maybe overwhelms it a bit, especially in that setting. My wife figured it out in an afternoon, and did 7 dinning room chairs in a day. Including removal, cleaning the nasty seats under the cushions, cutting and shaping new cushioning for the seat. Ours do not have backs. I would have put casters on the legs, and from experience I have found five legs on a chair is much more stable.

    Very nice project. I like the ensemble you made for this bedroom. Your shop is nicer than mine. Can I come for two weeks and practice watching you work in a live settings? Oh, and your humor is top notch. Just like me, my family never know what to expect.

    It’s funny that someone who has a cnc considers using a router and bandsaw to make bowties “doing it by hand”. But in any case it looks like a comfy chair.

    Comfy! and I love the 2 different wood species. My other half did wood turning and was always mixing wood for design and style! I think the cushions should be firmer but the rounded pleats have a more girl vibe to them. I hope you discuss with the upholsterer about not making it too boxy and formal.

    This may be a bit late but ... for the cushions you should consider different layers of foam, ie: a laminate of differing densities. Starting with a thickish and firm base layer - to keep the structure, then a less firm layer in the middle for comfort and then a soft thinner layer on top - one of those foams with a profile like the inside of an egg box - for breathability and comfort.
