Big thanks to you and your dad for uploading this comprehensive video. My chain went earlier this year and I was able to replace it myself with a mates help. I wouldn't have had the nerve to even attempt it without this video! All I will say for any ep3 owners concerned about P0341 you'll know when it's coming as the engine will be sounding like a box of nails for about 3 seconds when starting from cold (severe chain slack). It was frightening the extent to which the chain had stretched (a full two links!). I found the most time consuming step for me was cracking the ultra-stubborn crank pulley bolt. I would always recommend using 3/4 " drive bar and deep impact socket for this job and not the 1/2" suggested, but once again, top video.
One of the best videos that explain exactly what you have to do to replace the timing belt - no skip-ed steps ! BTW, if you don`t have a Honda Tool to lock the crankshaft (can`t find at my local store), you can just put the car in 1st gear, ant that`s it ? I have a manual transmission. Also the torque for that nut is just 49 NM / 36 ft in my Accord - NOT 245 NM - so won`t stress the transmission.
Thanks for posting this - it's going to be a big help digging into my 09 Acura TSX - also just got the P0341 ECU code this past weekend (which also disabled the VSA control too). This has inspired me to go the DIY route.

Very informative video thanks for posting just did the chain and tensioner on a friends k20 powered EG civic. Pulled the engine out as there is even less room in a EG 1.4 engine bay with a K20 fitted LOL.

Great video in general, but that was far, FAR too much liquid gasket. You put that amount on and you risk blocking up oilways etc. with the stuff tha gets squeezed out when you refit the cases. Just smear a thin layer on with your finger.
Damn right. Wayyy too much hondabond. They used half a tube or more on this one job. That tube should last a few weeks lol. Good video none the less but good lord at that gasket maker smh.
Disagree. I tried to be conservative the first time and now I'm having to redo it bc I didn't use enough Honda bond. I should have used a bit more bc these k series leak easily at this part. Also if anyone reads this, make sure you let it cure for at least 24 hours before starting the car.
@@dimitriliving I'd respectfully suggest this says more about the people working on these engines than the engines themselves. I replaced the timing chain and guides etc on my EP3 Type R with a fraction of the amount used here and it didn't leak a drop. You need to get the surfaces absolutely clean without putting big scratches in them. Hondabond is a regular RTV silicone (not anaerobic), so all the crap you squeeze inside the engine will harden and float around in the oil until it hits the pick up screen.
awesome video... the icing on the cake would've been a start up tho. since most people dont know the timing they dont know if what they are seeing is fact or fiction, so a start up after replinishing the fluids wouldve been epic. anyway 5 stars for the video.
Great video! What advice can you offer on removing a stuck chain case? I need to remove the chain case and chain on my way toward replacing the cylinder head on my 2002 CR-V (K24A1). 218K miles so I'll be replacing the chain, guides and tensioner, too, as long as I'm in there. I'm just nervous about damaging the mating surfaces by prying the case away from the engine.
I am halfway through the this job at the moment just waiting for a new crank shaft seal to arrive before continuing. Great guide thank you for the time and effort you put in to it. Did you drained the coolant and oil before starting work on it?

dadknowscars I'll be replacing my timing chain tensioner on my 2005 Civic Si Ep3. Does the chain case need to be removed to replace the tensioner? I've got 160 000 miles on engine. I'm doing it as maintenance. Anything else that I'll need or recommend to replace while I'm there? Would appreciate feedback. Thanks
I cannot get the crank pulley bolt off. It's hard enough to get something in place holding the special tool, I then had about 2m of leverage and it felt like I was gonna tear an engine mount off before the nut would crack! Any advice???
I had the same issue as you, but I made sure the leverage was strong enough and I used an axle stand like in the video and with persistence it came off after 2 loud bangs.. Be careful and don't give up

Nice job. is it similar to the 2004 accord 2.4?, my car has a vibration I already replaced both inner joints and one engine mount and checked other 2 they are good, and the still vibrates I wonder if it could be the timing chain on the balance shaft jumped the tooth
Mines just started rattling under load only in higher gears at lower revs.. Think id get away with just replacing the tensioner? Only covered 79k miles, although previous owner liked a heavy foot...

I have a ep3 in garage (second car) i read honda claims the chain doesnt have to be replaced but seeing the two chains side beside my jaw drop .. im a welder not a mechanic but with proper research i might be able to handle this thanks to your video thanks
What honda says i dont listen anymore...they try to make money...if u keep running a streched chain what ever you do you will hear it..timing will get off..u will need a new head.. They know this...

just to add a side note you do not have to put the coils on the same spark plugs. if this was a distributor style ignition then yes but since its coil on plug it doesnt matter.

IV only heard mine rattle pritty loudly once on a cold morning start but the E.M.L is on and it's showing a cam sensor code error of which I'm told it's usually the chain stretch and not tge cam sensor. it's driving badly like all timing is out revs don't feel same

Does anyone know the hex/allen key size on the cam chain tensioner arm at 10:38? My keys seem loose and the bolt is hard as hell to take off, can't seem to get it. I'm using metric 6 size
If I had this many tools and a garage this would be fun. But I do not... lol. So I would be spending money on extra tools and parts. Then have to find a garage I can spend time in. Looks like I will be taking mine to the shop.
Terah Coggin yeah that make no sens, you can switch coils wherever you want. If there a trouble with one of them you gonna have misfiring on any cylinder you put that coil on.
Also to have a bad firing order, you would have to unwrap all the harness and mix up the wires the coils plug into it. But this as nothing to do with the coils. I'm never worked for Honda, and I'm not even a mechanic.
untill a point. on low oil pressure situations (low rpm and cold start) it will use the internall spring of the tensioner. if your tensioner is fucked chain wil slap
why replace the chain? When i spoke to Honda about the chain and related parts they said the chain was not something to worry about until the engine is well over 300K miles. but the tensioner is something to worry about.
XxChuyoxX That's true mine started to rattle at 100K miles. It took me 2 evenings to replace it. You don't need that many tools.. The thing that took me the longest was getting the crankshaft bolt loose!
XxChuyoxX Ever since honda went with timing chains for there 4 cylinder engines it has been nothing but garbage. I owned a tsx and the chain jumped I rebuilt the engine and got rid of it. Timing belt is the only logical way to build 4 cylinder engines. People nedd to stop being broke and cheap replace your timing belt every 100k and you literally have a brand new engine. This fact nit fiction. Peopl think timing chains last forever. They do not eventually they stretch and the car will drive like shit with no power.
Greg Galaxy it's not even about being cheap. With the belts some people don't even know about them till they go and then do damage to the engine. That's why chains were brought in the minimise failure and increase reliability in that topic. I had a type r with a 105k miles on, original chain and still good. If it were belt, it would of gone way before then.

Do the ignition coils really need to be in the right order? They're all have their own cord, wouldn't a signal on the cord tell them when to fire?

I got Lisle 77080 19 mm Harmonic Balancer Socket for Honda from Amazon. Your best bet.

Just make sure its not slack, it will tighten on its own accord too.

Im a mechanic and i find its a real pain in the a**...makes me feel like dropping the motor and makes me miss having a timing belt lolll

The chain links dontline up again only the marks on cam sprockets head and the cranks sprocket

looking at the video you didn't drain the oil. so I can I do this whole job and leave the sump full of oil?

The belt is the auxiliary belt, just drives the water pump, alternator and air con if you have it from the crankshaft.
