I suspect its due to the probability of rolling 18 ie 3 6s which is 1 in 6 times 1 in 6 times 1 in 6 which is 1 in 216 - it would make the game a little too hard imo

I have not seen a rule set that says you cannot add up all three dice. Play the way you enjoy though :)

Why limit the maximum no to 12 when the total of three dice can go upto 18
