    • @ClaraLawrence
      @ClaraLawrence  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks so much. If this were art only (like a canvas destined to be hung on a wall) then no a clear coat doesn't have to go on top. But, if there is any chance it will be used as functional art then yes. Once color is introduced to resin, your resin will loose it's food contact safe status. That is if you are using a resin that is designed to be food contact safe. A clear coat will bring that back into place. Any try or art of mine that might be used for food, I put a clear coat on it just to be safe.

    Can you put resin on cutting boards, and use it as a cutting board? I know you said you don’t recommend putting food on resin, and I’m curious as to why. Also, you said resin can only handle coffee heat? Can you use it for hot plates/serving dishes or is that too hot?

    • @ClaraLawrence
      @ClaraLawrence  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can put resin on cutting boards, but not in the areas you are going to cut on. Injesting resin is not a good thing and the knife will cut it up in thin pieces that might be too small for the eye to see. That is why you will see cutting boards with resin decorating the top and/or the handle. The resin I am using currently is from Stone Coat Countertops and it can handle resin up to 425 degrees. Highly recommend them.

    Hi! Love watching your videos...I learn something each time! Question: I have a small wooden tray I would like to put 3 photos on and resin. If I Mod-Podged them onto the tray prior to resining, would the photos be okay?

    • @ClaraLawrence
      @ClaraLawrence  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much. Yes you can put them in resin. Yes you will have to seal them with mod-podge top, bottom and edges. I did 4 panels for my Mom after they lost their home and so many photos to Hurricane Harvey, but I didn't seal my edges. Occasionally there is a bubble. Still looks good, but want to pass that on. Share pictures of your project when you get it done.

    Hi! It turned out absolutely stunning! Quick question the colours used are all pigment colours? If I were to do something similar can we use acycrlic colours? Thank you

    • @ClaraLawrence
      @ClaraLawrence  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks so much. They are either pigments, pastes or metallic powders. You can color resin with acrylics, you just have to be super careful as acrylics have water in them. This will change the chemistry and too much will seize up your resin fast. It is recommended not to add over 10 percent color, but with acrylics it is much less. In the beginning that is all I used, so it is possible.

    • @ClaraLawrence
      @ClaraLawrence  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. Not really. If it is thicker, it is only because I'm working on a few projects. Just pour slow so the colors don't blend together too fast.

    What does interference properties mean?

    • @ClaraLawrence
      @ClaraLawrence  ปีที่แล้ว

      With pigments, interference will be a color shifting color. If you look at it from one angle the main color will be blue, then you change your angle and you will see the blue but with an additional purple color.

    Did you seal the wood first? Is there a way of adding resin without it being too much as it can't drip off if in excess? If you were doing this but it was a clock would you paint the edges of leave it as it is? Thanks

    • @ClaraLawrence
      @ClaraLawrence  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This particular tray has been sealed already, so there wasn't a need for it. If you were doing something that didn't have sides to it, you could create a wall with painters tape to keep the resin in place or allow it to drip over the edge, but be sure to tape underneath for the drips.

    Why do you put clear resin on your tray before you put your color resin on?

    • @ClaraLawrence
      @ClaraLawrence  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you add coloring of any type to any kind of resin, you change the chemistry of the resin. The ones that are labeled a food contact (can serve food on) will loose that protection. Adding a clear coat gets that protection back. I do not know if my client will display this tray on a fancy shelf or serve their loved on a birthday meal on it. Either way, I want me and my client to be safe.

    can you use alcohol ink for this effect?

    • @ClaraLawrence
      @ClaraLawrence  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a tricky question. Can I reproduce this exactly with alcohol ink? It would be a tricky challenge, but you could. Can you do it straight onto wood without any additional clear coats or gesso prep? Nope. Use alcohol ink to do the blends and maybe clusters of color. Yes. Dirty pour? Nope.

  • @margaretbarlow5980

    Can you put fruit in the tray

    • @ClaraLawrence
      @ClaraLawrence  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is a good question. Currently this has color pigments mixed into the resin so it is not food safe, but adding a food safe clear coat of resin will help. However, storing food in any type of resin vessel I would recommend, nor cutting and eating from. They are food safe for serving food. Short contact. And the brand I do use (Stone Coat Art Coat) is food safe. Hope I answered your question.
