    If I remember correctly one of the five magic types, Faerie can make a overworld map as a spell.

      You are correct! This was something I found out after I made the video but I'm glad you pointed it out.

      I loved and hated this game at the same time. The promise of 100s of spells yet the truth that only a few were needed and the rest just killed you cause hp is mana too.

    Had this as a kid and remember getting lost a ton. My dad used to use grid paper to make maps.

    I love these old ambitious games. Trying to do something the NES had no business attempting. These sorts are more “Interesting In My Collection” games than actually fun to play however.

    This is one of those times that I'm impressed by what they tried to accomplish on the NES, and yet, underwhelmed at the same time. There was a lot more pushing the envelope in those early days than we give them credit for.

      I agree. It's optimized pretty well, tbf. Just some quality of life adjustments could have made it tons better.

    If anyone wants to try giving this game another go i recommend looking up some walkthroughs online that’ll give you a general idea of where to go next.
    I also recommend instead of water to start with the fairy magic because it has a spell that gives you the overworld map whenever you cast it along with enemy positions.
    There is also a parry/dodge “mechanic” that once you become proficient in, you can win battles unscathed, even overcoming monsters that can severely injure you with just a few strikes.
    Something that will really help you, especially in the battle against the final boss.

    As someone who has played a lot of the Taito arcade beat 'em up Dungeon Magic from the Taito Legends 2 PS2 game, I was definitely confused at first to see Dungeon Magic on the NES by Taito as this first person RPG XD but I learned a lot, and it looked fun.

    Talking about the unlabeled items in the store, it's amazing how much crap like that we put up with back in the day. Games were filled with items and stats and systems where we had no idea what they did or how they worked and didn't have the internet to figure it out. And many of these items and stats, the developers didn't realize they weren't useful anyway, or were priced in a way which you were stupid to buy them.

      It really is amazing.

    One other thing with this game that doesn't help is enemies get stronger and stronger the more you stay in the inn. It's not much (I think they get +1 strength every 16 inn stays) but it makes it a little more difficult along with all the other cryptic, confusing issues that this game has.

    That Taito joke never gets old :D always makes me smile! Great review of an ambitious but obviously not so great game. The anime style graphics in the dialogue and shop sequences actually look great though!

    Thanks for talking about the arcade, pointing out that it came later, It might be called Lightbringer as well, several names, I know it as Dungeon Magic,the NES looks it's Wolfenstein 3D/Doom FPS with the billboarding images.

    Amazing. I trust your opinion on a game like Dungeon Magic. I'm gonna delve into it with a much info from the internet as I can just cuz this game looks intriguing and who doesn't love an NES challenge. Witcher 2 on 360 was a tremendous challenge at first. With maps and magic and maybe a Genie code I will see what I can handle. Thanks!

    These first person dungeon crawler games are interesting to see on the NES but due to the system's limitations it's usually not a fun experience. Everything looks the same and is easy to get lost as you say. The music however is great and that opening theme is so good.

      Look up a walkthrough online that’ll show you where to go next and just start with fairy magic so you can use the map spell that’ll also give you enemy positions.
      That’s all you really need to beat the game.
      Granted, even with a walkthrough it can be pretty challenging.

    Ok. Im actually a retro pc gamer. This is like a cheap rip off of something like Dungeon Master, Eye of the Beholder, Lands of Lore or World of Xeen.
    Cool they pulled it off on the NES, but ehh. Oldschool real time grid RPGs are prolly my fav genre. But they were designed to be played with a keyboard and a lot more computing power

  • @williamsisk6707
    @williamsisk6707 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Boy this game is awful. Had it as a kid. Bought it used, came with the instruction manual, but not a pack-in map. I’ve played a lot of NES games that people label as “bad,” and can usually pull some fun out of them and love them despite their flaws. This one is an exception. Definitely made me cringe seeing the review pop on my feed. What I want to know is if anyone has actually completed this game, or if that is even possible. Nice review of a clunker.

    • @luminous6969
      @luminous6969 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah if you don't get the fairy magic at the start (for the map spell) and don't have the pack-in map, you're pretty much toast from the very beginning.
