My favourite bit is when George and Ringo are playing and the guy in the Walrus gear was meant to be Paul, but he couldn’t make it. Neil Aspinall then walks past holding John Lennon’s Imagine album (back cover) to represent the four fabs being ‘together’. Nice touch.

George said he wanted to make When We Was Fab about the best parts of being in The Beatles. He also said he started recording before he had all the lyrics, and it felt strange because he had never done that before, but Jeff Lynne makes it up as he goes, so it worked.
"He even used sounds from that time; the cellos, the backward bits, and the stars. “It was like a whole collection of impressions, a montage of that period,” George said.""

This 69-year old man was hoping you would react to this song at some point. I really liked a lot of what George did both with The Beatles and after. But I LOVED this song because almost 20 years later George was looking back on those times in a positive way (so much of what everybody heard was the internal strife that ultimately resulted in the dissolution of arguably the greatest, most impactful rock band of all time). And Jeff Lynne ... well, you can hear his footprint throughout - quite ELO-ish in sound and effect (not dissimilar to "Now And Then"). Thank you for enjoying this with us.

@@thomastimlin1724 No question he and SO many others were inspired by them (he actually met and watched them in Ab.Rd.Studios for abt 10 mins before he even finished his 1st ELO album) - hence my "... most impactful band ..." part of my comment. All I was pointing out is that ELO had a particular sound they developed that it's very recognizable, and I felt him producing this song and "Now And Then" lent a certain amount of that same kind of sound. And I'm not saying that's a bad thing (unlike how I feel about Phil Spector and his Wall Of Sound, which I feel is one of the best examples of over-priducing) - I like Jeff Lynne & what he has done over the years - really like him... But I LOVE The Beatles! And I imagine I'll go to my grave believing they were the greatest ever.

The walrus playing lefthanded bass was intended to be Paul. George Put it out that is was Paul but he was shy about showing his face. Actually Paul has stated he wasn't available that day and suggested letting anyone hold the bass with a walrus mask on and just telling people it was McCartney. And so they did.

The Beatles created a lot, but they also reached back. And old vaudville schtick was something they stuck into their creative pot, and stirred. In a scene from "HELP", George stops to observe Ringo cooking a large pot of soup. Suddenly, Ringo starts pulling all sorts of objects out of the the pot. A pair of glasses, a watch, etc. While George observes, Ringo pulls a ticket out of the pot. Without missing a beat, and in his dryest Cockney, George says, "Must be a season ticket."

For a Beatles fan who grew up with them in real time as a totally involved fan. (I was 13 in 1963 and they inspired me to be a professional drummer for decades) there was a lot of symbolism. Ex: The Apple he took a bite out of. The handcuffs imprisoning him to the guitar and the hand that unlocked them and him musically. The true wonder of the Beatles is how these four geniuses in their own way could hold the music together, sometimes painfully, to create what they did. There were other great groups but none as complete creatively. I am forever grateful for their music and the creative involvement with my life. They showed me my potential and inspired me to pursue it. They helped me live a fruitful life.

‘Cloud Nine’ was George’s comeback album after five years and it’s probably his second best album after ‘All Things Must Pass’. So many great songs are on it, including this, ‘This is Love’, ‘Got My Mind Set on You’ and ‘Just for Today’. Then the year after that, he created the Travelling Wilburys, so this album really restarted George’s creative juices.

You need to react to “I Am the Walrus” and “Glass Onion” by the Beatles to get some of the references. You’ll see them decked out in their costumes in the “Walrus” video, and “Glass Onion” refers back to “Walrus” in the lyrics “here’s another clue for you all/the walrus was Paul.” (Although the guy in the walrus costume in the “Walrus” video was John, actually.) In this video the guy in the walrus costume was supposed to be Paul…which is why he’s playing a left-handed bass.

At about 4:10, Ringo is on the right playing drums. On the left playing LEFT HANDED bass is a guy dressed up as " the Walrus"from the Magical Mystery Tour Album of late 1967, particularly for the "I am the Walrus" video from that TV movie. Later in the Glass Onion song John Lennon wrote for the White Album [1968], there were lyrics that said "And here's another clue for you all, the Walrus was Paul." Lennon meant in the "I am the Walrus" film Paul was dressed up as the walrus and on the album cover also. However, I cannot say that it is Paul playing bass here, but that would be funny as hell if it is a cameo appearance uncredited. Wikipedia says: In a 1995 interview, McCartney said, "George wanted me to be in it but I wasn't available. So I suggested that he put someone else in the walrus and tell everyone that it was me."

Remember, George became a Hindu. The music wasn't back in India, but was back in George's mind.

Jeff Lynne of ELO produced this for George. He wanted to capture the Beatles sound for this tribute, and Jeff delivered. BTW: The Walrus was Paul, as in Glass Onion.

It wasn't actually Paul though as he couldn't make it.

I believe the first violin player is Jeff Lynn at about 3:55. Before that, if you did not know, that was Ringo that handed George the Cello, and stood there watching, then took the Cello back. at 4:54, that was Elton John, passing by...the sounds of the indian sitar, is reference back to Harrison's use of it in Beatles records, particularly the on the Within Without You song from the Sgt. Pepper's album.

Thank you, Lee. Love George! I suggest you take a deep dive into All Things Must Pass, his solo triple album released after the breakup. So many great tunes: the title track, What is Life, My Sweet Lord, Wah-Wah, Apple Scruffs, many more. Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth) a few years later is also a gem.

Word on the street has it that during the scene with the walrus playing bass with George and Ringo on drums, that was Paul McCartney in the walrus outfit.

According to McCartney, that was the plan, but he was unavailable… So they used a “stunt double“ to dress as the walrus

    I loved it ❤️
George’s love for that time with his Beatles brothers, expressed with such whimsy, was endearing! I didn’t recognize all the allusions. It reminds me of Paul’s whimsical Coming Up video where he is everywhere and very funny. I love that, too.
What a good Dad he was and what a good Dad you are. Maybe Beatles are your connection…Remember your A Day In the Life video? It became filled with unusual light…as we watched. If you did not do CGI or post editing…then, ?!
This happened: After A Day In the Life finished, you say, “I just had like a life changing vision just happen while listening to this song.” “The balls on these guys.” At 7:43 light begins to billow from the window. At 7:45 you say “ascended” and at 8:08 “Wo!” A sharp blue ray of light touches your shoulder as you say, “George”, fades, and returns to touch your shoulder again as you say, “John”…! “like a sign” you say, and it comes back…!
It was magical…unbelievable… a powerful energy. LOVE

Such a fun song and video! George was good friends with the Monty Python bunch and personally bankrolled a few of their movies (beginning with "Life Of Brian") and this video has a very Pythonesque feel with all those visual gags, like the super-long keyboard being carried past him. Great production too (by Jeff Lynne, of course).
The man pushing a cart at 4:35 was long rumoured to have been Paul Simon, but wrongly it seems. He remains unidentified. :)

It was recorded just a few months after John’s death. MUST SEE for L33!!☮️❤️🎸

I think that the players on either end of the ridiculously long violin were Jeff Lynne and semi-ubiquitous percussionist Ray Cooper who I first saw with Elton(who wandered past in this video), on the 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' tour. Was kinda stunned you didn't recognize Ringo, thought it might be George Martin(!?). Great, fun video.

Kevin Godley & Lol Creame formerly of 10CC created the video. Also the bass player in the walrus suit was not Paul. He had wanted to be there but had other comittments, so he told George to put someone in the suit playing left handed and tell people it was him, lol.
