- As the deadline for the updating of electricity meter boxes draws closer, energy analyst Mthunzi Luthuli says it's unfair to blame Eskom for those who failed to migrate their meters.
Luthuli says the power utility has for the past year been on a campaign to urge electricity users to update their meters to avoid being cut off.
Tune into Newzroom Afrika DStv channel 405 for more.
I only heard about this, this morning. I’m am struggling to understand why he would say it’s the consumer’s fault? What are these information campaigns he is talking about?
The program was NEVER communicated vigorously.
Ppl must take responsibility here, this was surely announced last year already.
Exactly just buy token and you will automatically give you the number to register .we have been suffering from loadshading and is low reduction because of shorts-cut ,back doors electricity now we are crying can we take South Africa serious mara
They could’ve communicated this the way they communicated voting
90% of those ppl we're not buying electricity so they are blocked until they contact Eskom
That is not true. ESKOM did not send officials to the villages to properly inform and educate communites how to "DIY". +90% of people in the villages buy electricity.
They should have sent people and communicated in different languages period!
"Eskom is not using its monopoly positions to drive prices down"? This gentleman either did not pay attention to his economics lecturer or he did not study economics. Monopoly of any industry, always results in seriously high prices and this is consistent with the trend we have been seeing with eskom.
The only way to break that monopoly is to introduce competition. Imagine if star link of Elon Musk were to get a nod from the current government how cheap data would be in this country? The only reasons the ANC does not allow it is because of their organisational self interests in Vodacom and MTN and NOT the citizens.
The real issue here is that most of these individuals particularly in soweto have not been paying electricity for years. This is known to most people who either stay in soweto or know someone who does. They have been connecting illegaly, the very thing eskom is trying to curb.
Otherwise the process is simple as the gentleman in studio just explained. If Soweto is dark come Monday, that would be justice. Our infrastructure is debilitating because of the ANC corruption and we do not need fellow citizens acting as though electricity is manna from heaven. Thetr is no free lunch.
See how they are suffering on long queues just because they were not paying electricity for years yet they have tenants living in their yards.
All I know is that... where I'm from, the people were given meters and stuff. Within 24 hours, a lot had bypassed them. Completely ignoring anything that had to do with Eskom (except loadshedding schedules). So, it is not that the information wasn't there, It only went around as soon as people knew the coming threat of electricity cut-offs... which was late. My condolences to the passing of the man in Orlando.
No way for pepple of SOWETO to say they did not know, this was all over since last year, here in KIMBERLEY people came from the manucipality and inspected my electricity meter and did verification process there is no way they can say they did not know...ba maaka batho ba!!!
I recoded months ago, I even forgot. EThekwini municipality did a good job, I guess...🤔
Soweto residents were living for free for far too long yet they have tenants renting to them, now they are exposed, look at the long queues of thieves, law breakers.if they allowed Eskom last year to enter their yards checking on meter boxes..they could have not been panicking by now, they could have just received an SMS from Eskom notification of upgraded system.
Well said. Not Eskoms problem.
@@michellelewis1090 This is not just about Soweto
@@LukeRev480 Did I say it was?
@@michellelewis1090 Sorry ,meant for @ diatilethoba
@@michellelewis1090 Sorry, meant for @diatilethoba8262
Absolute power absolute corruption
What about those who Totally not paying for years especially informal settlement then what is the role of municipality if they fail to tackle those problems
Not the municipalities problem. If people know they have been dishonest it it their responsibility.
If it shows 22✔️like this does it means the meter box is upgraded
If its stops I will call human rights to assist, angeke asize I crime ayeke ugesi lo human rights wama kwere kwere
This has to do with meters becoming old. They cannot take more numbers. Like what happened in 1999 to change to 2000. Nothing to do with Eskom, it is a meter upgrade. Electricity is not a human right.
You just putting numbers in haloooo 🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒
eskom will connect them any way
Is this a SOWETO thing cause us in other province's literally I've not been informed
KZN - Durban, we knew all along about this. I bought electricity some time early in the year, and I got the recoding tokens...
Mr Mthunzi who's shocked why South Africans just dont switch. We as South Africans are tired, tired of having to be at the end of Eskom who implemented this system without adequate roll outs that warrants us as consumers to constantly be keeping up with the changes from Eskom. Build meters that dont need to be migrated to anything or have support teams that will easily assist us. Each time Eskom rolls out they only think about the now, then face crisis, us as consumers need to be part and parcels of those mediocre decisions made by Eskom. We are tired!!!
This has nothing to do with Eskom, it has to do with meters being unable to 'turn over' like what happened in the change from 1999 to 2000. People were advised in October last year.
@ read my comment again, then comment.
I did. I repeat, this is about redundant meters, nothing to do with Eskom. It is the same as when telephones, not cell phones, had to have new digits added, nothing to do with Telkom.
So has ESKOM got people walking those lines to assist people where they can so they dont have to be in the queue. Take the time and earn your salaries people working fir ESKOM. Its like a banking hall where people are assisted without having to stand sometimes.
If people are smart enough to put 1set of digits into a meter they are smart enough to put in 2 sets of digits into the same meter. Stop enabling disempowerment. If people were buying legal electricity, they would have received their reprogramming digits to enter into their meter. It's how 4.2 million other SA did it. They had over a year to reprogram and they didn't. Now they want to cry foul. People need to take responsibility for being irresponsible. If they didn't do it in 1 year come Monday these people will have a bigger problem.
@@idealcareerscoaching9475STOP TALKING NONSENSE! This is easy but it was not properly communicated. e.g Rural people know that when ESKOM wants something from them. The office sends people to talk to communities but they did not send anyone, they just informed journalists. Most people were waiting to be properly informed. There are different households with different needs. You do not need a PHD as a leader to understand that.Leadership should have educated people thats it. 0:03
We were never told about this we just here in last minutes wena u are siding with eskom xem
People were advised in October last year. This is to do with the meters being unable to 'turn over' to take new numbers, like what happened in the change over from 1999 to 2000. It has nothing to do with Eskom.
Even if you didn't know though, you would at some point bought electricity and gotten the recoding tokens with your electricity...
Ward counselors didn't inform communities about the renewal of electricity meter numbers
The press and Eskom warned about this from October last year but yes, your ward counselor should have advised. It has nothing to do with Eskom it is the meters that cannot 'turn over' to accept new numbers. Like what happened in the change over from 1999 to 2000.
@@michellelewis1090 ESKOM DID NOT COMMUNICATE PROPERLY! Are we suppose to teach Eskom management how to efficiently communicate with thier clients?
Mthunzi you did not teach people how to DIY. ESKOM did not communicate it properly, you should have come to the communities to teach people how to DIY. You know very well we have elderly people who live by themselves.
To seat there and act like you know nothing is a true reflection of sleeping ESKOM leadership. YOU might have started last year but you did not teach people how to do it. It's ESKOM failurr to understand the art of communication.
Now ESKOM does not know how different families are structured in South Africa? ESKOM does not know the education level of different households yet you claim to be black people? Uyazi nina nidinga imvubu straight. Ingase ndikuqwazulule ngemvubu kweso situlo. Nale information is only in English and you have audacity to say you have done your job.
You peached this like all people have degrees yet you know that is not the case. And your offices have only one staff member yet ESKOM IS NOT TO BLAME!
I hate it when people like this are in leadership. People who don't care.
This has nothing to do with Eskom and people were informed last year in October that this was going to happen. The meters cannot 'turn over' to accept new numbers, like what happened in the change from 1999 to 2000.
@michellelewis1090 You are not listening. ESKOM did not inform via the correct channels, they only talked to the media and mostly in English. hence people did not associate that with them. They should have sent officials to educate communities to DIY, write the informatoon in official languages outside thier offices. As we speak there is nothing outside thier offices, which leaves the load to the poor security guard during weekends to explain to every customer who desparately wants information ( not a guards job, they are just helping)
This should have been a massive campaign. There should have been imbizo's within the communities not on tv.
