    This was a great way for me to "payback" all of the guys that took the time to show how to replace and test the glow plugs and relay on the Fords. Thanks

    Great info,
    You could also crack the glow plug apply oil drive for a couple of days`allowing oil to work its way down the threads ,and while engine warm should make it easier to remove stubborn glow plug,
    Also` always best practice to clean out internal threads and apply high temperature anti seize grease on the new glow plug threads befor replacing them.
    But take nothing from you,this video was Brilliant information for a already seized and damaged glow plug removal.

    This method worked for me yesterday but when I went to tap down on the vice grips when they were connected to the electrode and it kept slipping off and bending the metal so I ended up using a 6in 1/4 extension and pounding it until it started to move then used this method and it worked like a charm.

      LD Texas
      The 6.0 glow plugs are much easier to pull. The are outside if the valve covers (just below). Be careful when pulling the wiring harness. It breaks very easily. Be ready to replace that harness. Make sure and buy the little tool. And go in through the inner fender. It's worth the extra hassle.

    Good video, so far I haven't had to deal with stuck GPs, what worse is when you have nothing to grab onto, I've read about tips snapping off in the head with no other way than to pull the head, and what a shame since these 7.3s RARELY need a head gasket.

    • @PatrickBaptist
      @PatrickBaptist 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      LOL, 2 years later now I am dealing with a plug that the very tip broke off at SOME point, but I don't think me taking it out broke it. I cranked on it for a little bit and never heard anything, it wasn't ever stuck or anything, I have it on video it came out real easy..... I'm hoping this happened a long while ago because I don't have time to pull the head, just throwing it all back together. Doing a fuel bowl delete and other small stuff.

    This is usually the result people find them selves dealing with when they have non Bosch brand glowplugs installed and it is time to remove them. The tips in the Non factory spec plugs reach a higher temperature due to the alloy of metal used and resistance differences in the alloy used resulting in the tip of the glowplug overheating and deforming as the metal oxidizes and expands.
    If you look you'll see that all Bosch glowplugs are discolored from the pretested at the assembly plant to catch any quality control problems in assembly and components preventing this problem.
    People paying 5-10$ for a glow plug think they are getting a good deal till they have this problem and are paying to remove and reinstall a cylinder head or worse, the engine, because the tip of their glow plug swelled up and broke off while the engine was running.
    Seen it happen many many times and I don't let anyone cheap out on using quality glow plugs.

    Sometimes carbon builds up around the glow plugs causing them to stick on some diesels. Use either a reemer or a drill bit coated with heavy grease and reem out the area. you may need to use a wrench to get it to go through the carbon. The grease will pull out the loose carbon. This will help prolong the life of your new glow plugs.

    Brig, this is an excellent technique. Thanks so much for posting the video. I find it interesting that I have the exact same plug (No. 2, I think) on my '97 PSD stuck exactly the same way. I also, like another commenter, have the one on the drivers side by the firewall stuck. I will let you know how it comes out.

    • @BrigT262
      @BrigT262  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jon, thank you for the reply. I did not ream out the hole with a greased drill bit as was mentioned on this thread. But when I changed out the GP's, night / day difference in cold starting. So I don't think my carbon build up was that bad. But it's a good tip to know for sure. I use stanadyne addative periodically and I believe that stuff really works great.
      I also think there is more room between the firewall on the F series psd's as compared with the SD's. Just a thought. Luckily for me, that one was not stuck.
      Anyway..good luck and thanks again.

    • @jonathanoconnor5123
      @jonathanoconnor5123 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brig,
      So, I finally got it out but I had to pull the rocker arm to do it. I had rounded off the upper portion of the hex trying to turn it AND keep the deepwell out of the way of the push-rod seat on the rocker. You're right also regarding the cold starting; night and day. I had also replaced all the o-rings on the injectors so that stopped the white clouds billowing out at start-up.
      Again, thanks for the video and the reply to the reply and remember... keep your stick on the ice.
      Jonathan

    hello
    greatest broken glow plug video ever! one question, what was the brand of glow plug that broke in the head? I am over in Paris, France & need to change the plugs on my diesel Opel Zafira needless to say I am horrified at the thought of this happening to me. from your video it looks like the head of the plug came out but left the threaded part attached to the cylinder head, correct? look forward to your response. thanks.

  • @batsonlogging

    Great video, it is nice to see a man do stuff himself!
    Question for you, did you put anti-seize on them when you put them back in?
    When taking them out, before you start, is it ok to soak them overnight in WD-40? Help? Hurt?
    thanks!

    • @BrigT262
      @BrigT262  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't use anti seize on the reinstall. The threads are not what gets locked up. Its the carbon build up from not changing them for a long time. Also, I wouldn't suggest soaking with wd. You want to avoid allowing any fluid /oil to drain back into the cyl. The glow plugs should be changed more regularly to avoid having them get carbon locked

    Any ideas for when putting a new one in and it's just spinning? I had to drill the old one out, maybe I've doe something to the threads.. I'm stumped.

      Yea, if your threads are damaged, then your looking at possible helicoil repair and more than likely, pull off the head.

      @@BrigT262 I have some aluminium tape, thinking of cutting a little off and wrapping around the plug thread, then screwing it with some force. Maybe worth a shot! Taking the head off is way beyond my skillset and wallet!

      @@BrigT262 Oh jeez!! Thanks for the replies Brig T. So a helicoild and tap should be a little bigger than the glow plug to go in - am guessing 1.25mm if the glow plug is 1.0? (inside helicoil diameter of 1.0)

    I have a broken tip stuck in my head and I was think to flood it with EGR cleaner and turning the engine on. Do you think that piston could blow it out without causing more damage ??

    Did the new glow plugs resolve the bad cold start issue?

    • @BrigT262
      @BrigT262  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it did. On the 7.3, you always should replace the glow plugs as well as the relay at the same time.
