I first heard this song on a transcontinental flight between SFO and Dublin. I don’t know who does the audio selection on Aer Lingus, but whoever it is, they are some kind of genius. They had this album with this song (which I think is an outtake) and Oar by Skip Spence. Not what you’d expect on music selection on a flight!

Phenomenal electric 12-string from McGuinn on this out-take, much better than the version he did on "Cardiff Rose". Dark and sinister which much traditional folk music, born of want, always is.....

This is a really old song, and it's (very loosely) based off of what was probably a true story. The original version was from England, called The Gosport Tragedy. The true story behind it happened in 1726 (or as true as we can tell, this was 300 years ago after all) was that of a man named Charles Stewart, a ship's carpenter, who murdered his pregnant mistress and buried her in a shallow grave in the woods outside Bedford, and then ran away on a ship headed to America, but he did not survive the journey.

The best track on Sweetheart of the Rodeo and it wasn't on the original release - where's the logic?

Gram was under contract to another record company, so most all of his lead vocals were redone w/ McGuinn or just withheld.

@@labluvverDoesn't answer why it was left off. Far better than any of the other tracks.

      @@labluvver That's a matter of opinion.

@@artharris2537 Gene Clarke, Crosby, Hillman, and Parsons were all far better vocalists. That's my opinion. :)

Pretty Polly's beauty must've been incredibly difficult to resist.
