Steve what a fantastic job you've made of making a new grain pan for your 780. Can't wait to see how your project comes alone and look forward to see it working alongside your other combine will be quite a sight your own harvest brigade !! I did my apprenticeship with a Massey main dealer starting in 1967, There were heaps of 780 combines still in use then. I joined them in harvest time and for the first 18 months we were out on farms every day working on combines. I have fond memories of 780's, did work on a 726 one and lot of 788's. The petrol TVO ones with the Austin Newage engine ran very smoothly. Rebuilt a fair number of Perkins L4 where the farmers had not drained the coolant over the winter and had cracked blocks. Going to enjoy watching your videos as they will bring back memories!
Great video Steve. It brings back memories of the rebuild we carried out a few years ago. Those grain pans seem quite susceptible to rusting through- possibly because they were never cleaned out properly at the end of the season and the machine being left outside
Yes your right it's the only way to get them out and get them done I've seen them fiberglassed over before now sealing all the rust in that carnt be good 👍
My friend has just told me about you. I got my own channel devoted to old combines. Hope you get this one going. Don't give up pal. Lovely old machines. I will have a proper look at your channel when i get chance. I got to do some work on my model C Gleaner today. I got a straw skirt made up for it. Just needs getting ready. Be good to share stories some time.
I just watched the whole video. You done a nice job on the grain pan. I expect your very happy with that. I have rebuilt 3 Gleaners over the years. A 1960 EA thats done all but one harvest since new. I bought it in 2018. A rare 1962 model C, bought as barn find down in Devon in 2021. It had sat in the shed for 30 odd years. We got it back working in about 6 weeks. Then last year we did a full rebuild on it after seeing how it performed. We rebuilt the bottom end on the Perkins 6.305 engine due to low oil pressure when hot. Its basically spot on now. Just a few tidy up jobs left but nothing to pressing. Lovely machine low hours for age. Plus a 1964 A Super that i rescued from scrap in 2002. Like you i tend to keep them looking original if i can. We had them all cutting together last year for 100 years of Gleaner combines. Your 788 looks nice. A chap local to my parents had a really tidy 788. Unfortunately the scrap man bought it in a sale and cut it up. No one wanted it. Keep us posted pal.
That toolbox must have been sited specifically for the enjoyment of a young lad. (i was going to say "an old boy" but that's maybe only a Norfolk thing.
Great video 👍 that was a bonus getting the grain pan totally refurbed in one week 💪 was just trying to remember my dad drove a Massey Ferguson 760 im sure it was that had a 6 cylinder petrol paraffin Austin engine in it if my memory serves me correctly 🤔🤣 but i could be wrong 🙄
Hi there so pleased to see the restoration 780 special that you’re doing. I have a combined that I’ve rescued about four years ago she is pretty much in working order but has got the same problem with the grain pan. I live just 7 miles south of Bury Saint Edmunds Suffolk just wondered if I could come up and visit you and just take a look at what you’re doing and maybe your brother would be kind enough to create me the same replacement bottom for the grain pan. My machine hasn’t Perkins L4 engine and although it was seized when we got it thankfully all freed off and apart from the injection pump rack been seized in the shutdown position it starts and runs with reasonably good oil pressure. When I was a boy about 14 years old some 42 years ago 780 messy Harris what’s the harvester that we had for harvesting about 90 acres each year Machine was fitted with the Austin new-age six cylinder petrol power of an engine which for the most part was quite reliable sometimes would need a new condenser fitted as it will start to misfire this seems to be a regular problem with them also when harvesting Barley it wasn’t unusual to start to get a fire going on top of the manifold in the late afternoon on a hot day. Which was originally good sense of smell you could tell what was going on before things got out of hand. I’ve been watching your channel for a while and would be nice to meet up with you I have quite a collection of interesting vintage equipment much of which we still like to use like yourself. When I was a boy there were loads of 780s it's great to see one being saved and going back to work ! Great video again !
